Another day.

Another game.

Another poorly defended set piece.

*sigh*

And it doesn't look like Everton are going to get any better at set piece defending as this is an area where Marco Silva's coaching is weak. He probably needs to bring in a specialist defensive/set-piece coach.

Terrible stat. Marco Silva was appointed on the 5th January at Hull that season. In the month he was in charge until this point in the year, they conceded 3 in 4 games (including vs Chelsea, Liverpool and United by the way) one of which was a penalty. So that leaves two potential set piece goals that he could have some responsibility for - most likely one is, as it was Gary Cahill who scored.

I’m not saying Silva does  not have an issue there, but that is typical Keys - slandering foreign managers who dare to be appointed at relegation battling clubs instead of his mates. Like his claim Benitez should have bought players for Newcastle with his own money if he really cared.

Keys is a twat but it is definitely clear that Silva is terrible at defensive organisation (set-pieces especially). Even discounting his stint at Hull, his defensive organisation at Watford was awful and that has continued with Everton. It's starting to look like Silva is just another Roberto Martinez.

Our defensive organization isn't all that bad in general (though I wish we could get another central defender with a bit more pace - Keane is really a liability when we play a high line), but his record at set pieces is horrendous.

Generally, I think zonal marking can work fine. Norwegians tend to remember our international team in the 90's, which was very well organized defensively - in zones. What you do need, however, is defenders attacking the ball, being aggressive, claiming their zone. We don't do that, and as a result, we see goals like Laporte's yesterday (he should have had two), or Raul Jimenez' last game. Entirely down to poor agressiveness (or, if you don't like zonal marking, poor marking).

And this is really the surprising thing with Everton when you have big guys like Zouma, Keane and Mina. These guys are usually the danger men on set plays at the other end of the pitch - Mina especially is a beast in the box when it comes to attacking set plays. Yet when defending set pieces, the Everton defenders are guilty of ball watching and just letting runners go. Silva being weak in this area of his coaching is not the end of the world and hopefully for Everton's sake he has the self-awareness to recognise this flaw and bring in a specialist set-piece/defensive coach to help him out.

I certainly hope so.

That feature of our games start reminding me of Martinez - in his case, the mindless moving of the ball slowly back and forth.

My random thoughts on the matter are:

- It's early. He's trying to get us to play differently than we used to - generally that takes time.

- We got sort of a managerial bounce at the start of the season, it has evaporated. I hope, though, that this is a bit like Guardiola/Klopp in their first seasons - getting an immideate bounce followed by a slightly tougher time, before the new system sets.

- He has so far only had one (proper) transfer window to work with. So far, a few players are cleared out, but more culls will probably come.

- Mostly, the players look better than last year. But, then again, last year we employed Sam Allardyce.

- I am a bit worried about the set pieces. Shouldn't be so hard to fix, and it's very clearly a problem.

Bundesliga had a couple of fun games today.

Dortmund was comfortably leading 3-0 against Hoffenheim, only for Hoffenheim to fight its way back to a 3-3. Great, entertaining game. (Hoffenheim goalks 75th minute, 83rd minute and 87th minute of play).

Freiburg was trailing 1-3 against Wolfsburg. But they also managed to equalize, and even score a fourth in the last minute after a corner. Alas, the VAR saw an offside/goalie interference (90+3). So the final score remained 3-3.

Gladbach fell prey to Hertha :( 0-3.

Hannover won their relegation battle against Nürnberg and switched places with them (relegation is still pretty much a three horse race between them and Stuttgart).

Later on it's Bayern - Schalke. Overshadowed by the death of Schalke's iconic former DoF Assauer (he was suffering from Alzheimers in his later years). In some ways, Rudi was his very own parody. Big macho alpha-male figure, always with a cigar in his mouth, some oil in his hair, and just the right amount of sleaze around him, that qualifies you as either sporting manager, or used car sales man. And also never shy of putting his own foot in his mouth. Some of his more memorable quotes include:

We changed our club name to pant crappers 04 [from Schalke 04], we landed a good sponsoring deal with diapers company.

Emile [Mpenza] is a little light-headed guy, who still has to become a man. He will do just that here.

I don't talk about managers in public, unless I am about to hire or fire one.

The mutual termination of his contract happened, after I told him that we wouldn't continue [to work together]

Real Madrid totally outclassed Atleti to win 3-1. Reguilon was once again brilliant at LB totally justifying keeping Marcelo out the team and Vinicius Jr put in another impressive display. VAR completely fucked up on Real's second goal though - replays showed that Vinicius Jr was fouled just outside the box but VAR decided to uphold the refs original decision of a penalty.

Atleti were really poor throughout. An error strewn performance lacking in intensity, pressing practically nonexistent and vulnerable defensively particularly on aerial balls - basically a very un-Atletico like performance. Morata was wank except for one moment where he showed great ball control skills to take down a long pass and chip Courtois but he was offside.
