If R+L=J, Rhaegar Targaryen is a parallel of Uther Pendragon

They have odd similarities. Both men flew a dragon as their sigil, were of dubious morality, lusted after a woman who was promised (or married) to another man (Igraine for Uther, Lyanna Stark for Rhaegar), took them in different ways (willingly or not), which beget a bastard son (which also ties into Jon Snow being a parallel to Arthur). Rhaegar/Uther died shortly before or after the son was born, and the son was taken from them to be raised by another man. Both sons wielded powerful swords and were surrounded by prophecy, though it remains to be seen if Jon will fulfill any prophecy.

Yeah the similarities are there for sure. If only we had Winds. :bang:

Anyone?

Few rambling thoughts on Uther and similarities to Rhaegar and the Targaryens in general, feel free to dissect and oppose...

In White's The Once and Future King he bids us to forget the "fake news" of William the Conquerer and instead pitches Uther as the true leader of the Norman conquest, essentially showing him as an Aegon I style figure.

I've read some brilliant threads on here years ago analysing Mallory and Geoffrey of Monmouth for examples of parallels between Rhaegar and Uther, especially the forbidden love aspect.

The Once and future King, Bernard Cornwell's Warlord trilogy and the 1980s movie Excalibur is as far as my knowledge of Arthurian stories go, but the similarities are obvious.

If the real life basis of Arthur is actually a Roman leader still in Britian after the empire fell, then there's a further Targaryen parallel, with a survivor from a highly advanced empire stuck "way out west", though Westeros in Rhaegar's time is a lot more advanced than post Roman Britian.
