Why did Aegon IV Targaryen have so many girlfriends?

Not attractive? He's got wealth! The most attractive trait of them all!

  • The guy with the big brains wins at school.
  • The guy with the big muscles wins at sport.
  • The guy with the big heart wins in friendship.
  • In everything else, it's the guy with the big bank account who wins.

He was the least attractive among all Targaryen kings.

He wasn't always unattractive. He started off very handsome, until he gave into his lust and gluttony.

He had more women then other Targaryen Kings because other Targaryen Kings where either decent human beings, who didn't give into lust, or they where smart enough to realise they need to keep up appearances. Aegon IV was neither of those things.

These women where either being forced into it by their Lord husband, father, or brother, or they where in it for the power Aegon could give them.

His love stories seem to be unbelievable.

His love stories seem unbelievable because they aren't love stories. It was lust on his part, and greed or fear on the women's part.

It is not like he was asking them out. He was the King.

As Dunk put it,  Aegon IV mantra was: Wash her and bring her to my bed.

Argon IV’s girlfriends were all from wealthy noble family. It’s not like they were poor women in need of a man to provide for them.

Not all the mistresses were noblewomen (Megette for one), but I digress. Being the king's mistress gives you status and power, and not all of them chose it of their volition -- the pressure to be with a king is real, and it may have been their fathers who pushed them into it to get a higher station or the like.

Aegon IV only seems to have grown fat late in his life. He only ruled for twelve years, and he was still handsome when he took the throne. From what we learn he seems to have become somewhat fat by the time he dumped Melissa Blackwood in favor of Bethany Bracken.

Most of Aegon's women would have been seduced rather than forced, one imagines, considering the guy looked good and was a prince and then a king. He also had whores and the like, but chances are that for the overwhelming majority of his life he didn't *really* have to force a woman to be with him.

And his mistresses before he became king - Falena, Megette, Cassella, and Bellegere - all seemed to have been in love with him to various degrees.
