K, what this is theologically known as is a "blessed rape."  What does that mean?  I don't know.  You would need someone more knowledgeable about what that entails than me to describe it.

I think Ned rather disagrees with you.

Robert is really the only one who thinks rape, and even he knows deep down it was not, even if he can;t admit it to himself, as evidenced by his believing that Rhaegar are Lyanna were together in death - something associated with lovers, not raper and victim.
But because he was king his story became the official one.

Just to make a mental note of it, from a search of ice and fire, here's the quote that I keep on missing:

Ned remembered the moment when all the smiles died, when Prince Rhaegar Targaryen urged his horse past his own wife, the Dornish princess Elia Martell, to lay the queen of beauty's laurel in Lyanna's lap. He could see it still: a crown of winter roses, blue as frost.

Not sure of the point. Is it that laurel is used to mean the crown of winter roses? The meaning of "laurel" is not just the specific plant from which the Ancient Greeks made a crown of leaves for the winners of contests. It has come to mean such a crown itself, not limited to the laurel plant. Is there another point I'm missing here?

Not one I would know of. I think it is a part of the gradual reveal of the meaning of the blue roses - first just roses, then blue roses, then a garland of them, then a laurel, with an explanation that it is a crown. From what I can see about the use of the word laurel in the word search, GRRM doesn't use it often and only in connection with winning a tourney.

GRRM uses laurel here to mean an honor awarded; i.e., Rhaegar honored Lyanna (with the QoLaB's crown) at Harrenhal. In ADwD we are told by Ser Barristan that the young and beautiful Ashara Dayne was dishonored at Harrenhal. It seems like GRRM might have set up a deliberate contrast here.

Since honor and dishonor are opposites, perhaps the acts themselves—Ashara's dishonoring and Lyanna's honoring—are somehow meant to contrast. For example, if we assume Ashara Dayne's dishonor was being bedded and possibly impregnated before marriage, then we could predict that any hypothetical bedding and impregnation of Lyanna would have taken place after marriage.

Ned is dead. Who's going to tell anyone about it?

Bloodraven and Bran may have learned of it through the weirwood network. Benjen might know. Checkov's CrannogmanHowland Reed is the sole survivor of the encounter at the Tower of Joy, and George R.R. Martin has stated he has not yet appeared because he knows too much about the central mystery of the book. "They had found him [Ned] still holding her [Lyanna's] body" tells that there also was someone else besides Howland to find Ned.

There are thousands of posts across the internet that use this SSM as "proof" that Jon's parentage is the central mystery of the entire ASOIAF books. Yet it isn't even a quote from George RR Martin. It is the word of a fan that is recapping what he claims GRRM said...and obviously Howland "knowing too much about the central mystery" isn't in itself an indication of what that mystery is.

You should feel free to challenge anything in the opening thread, but please note that I'm not the author of this little part of it. It is the custom of everyone here to start a new R+L=J thread with somethings our little community thinks might be helpful to new participants, including links to the many threads that preceded this one. I don't endorse everything that everyone has contributed to that effort, even though I appreciate it.

Let me just say your response calls out the author of the SSM, but it doesn't say why you do so. Were you there in 2000 when Martin is reported to have said what he did? If not perhaps you might want to ask @Ran or one of the moderators from the time on why they posted this as part of the SSM catalogue. I don't have a clue why you would question this report. If you have something other than it is only "the word a fan" saying so, it might be worth while telling us. Otherwise, I'm really not sure of the value in making such a comments.

I mean, @JEORDHl is still an active member of the forum...

It's so long ago that I wouldn't expect him to be able to remember whether "central mystery" was his editoralizing or not, but the fact that George has used the question of Jon's parentage as a litmus test for both his editor (whom he asked after she read the submitted draft of AGoT) and D&D (in their meeting when they pitched developing it) rather than "Who do you think tried to kill Bran?" is probably telling about the relative importance of the questions to understanding what he considers central to A Song of Ice and Fire. FWIW, both of those events happened long after the report in question (or rather, Anne Groell was asked before, but didn't mention it in public until a decade ago or so)

I don't have them any more, mind [I'd taken notes] but it was a verbatim response to a question I'd asked him about Howland at a book signing in Victoria, BC. Beyond certain circles ASoIaF wasn't a huge noise back then, so there were maybe eight to dozen people there. We got to bug him for a while.

It's a direct quote.

Happy to help.

I never expected to get a response from you! Thank you very much!

It certainly isn't your fault people attach it to the RLJ theory. It doesn't even mention Rhaegar, Lyanna or Jon. Or even reference parentage or hint at what the "central mystery of the series is".

"We will meet Howland Reed, but not in the next book... he(Howland) knows just to much about the central mystery of the book..."

[chuckles]

Honestly, what do you think Howland might otherwise know that could be considered central beyond the happenings at the Tower of Joy?

The migratory patterns of Wyverns? Maybe Howland has secretly been at the Citadel all this time, forging his link on the elastrohydrodynamic properties of the oil that  Mopatis uses in his hair?

Please.

---

But yeah sure, why not. When George retroactively changes things up because of the show you can give everyone a big I told you so.

The origin and motives of the Others / White Walkers maybe?

Sure, if you buy the showrunners origin of the Others maybe. I don't, but perhaps that's my general distaste for anything after S4 tainting George's creativity monotone.

What I do know, is Rhaegar and Lyanna tipped the scales on what was wrong in Westeros [Aerys' burning of the Starks and Robert's Rebellion, the Lannister sacking and decimation of the Targaryen dynasty, etc] and then there's George's oft statements about the idea of starting this story after the main protagonist died-- Rhaegar.

Two people knew the truth how all that bore out, and Ned's dead.

And how, and especially why, should this be conveyed through Howland? There are way better characters for such a reveal, like Bloodraven or CotF themselves, and you have Bran on the weirnet. Don't you think that Howland is rather redundant in this area?

Yep. Something happened  with R+L, and we have written tons of pages (definitely way more than about the Others) trying to figure it out - this mystery that Howland is connected to. Really sounds to me as the mystery.

On the account of Ned being dead... bones remember. I wonder if this means they might also talk :-) - Either way, the combo of Howland, Ned's bones, Robb's will and whatever/whoever else might be hanging out in the Neck is really asking for some action.

Probably not, but his time on the Isle of Faces might have some sort of impact on the story.

Howland Reed is the last survivor named of the ToJ. He is the one character we know for sure can shed light on what happened there. Everything Ned knew, he also knows.

That's not to say that what he learned with the green men is not directly tied to Jon and his origin story.

For some reason I fully expect Jon to have a total mental breakdown over finding out that he is not Ned's son. Being Ned's son is everything to Jon. His whole identity is based on Ned. He practically worships him as his only parent and source of a home and caring. To know that he had been lied to by him will be tough to accept. I think he will at first deny this all as being some kind of elaborate hoax or ruse. I can imagine him accepting Lyanna as his mother easily (as he'd never had one, and she fits who his mother had been in his hopes/dreams) but Rhaegar as his father over Ned?? No, unthinkable!

It is not about Howland being redundant in this area or not.

But don't you think that the origin and motives of the Others is a more central mystery than R+L=J ...

Haven't watch anything after season four, so we agree there.

To the bolded part, I've always been partial to the clue Martin leaves us that "they" found Ned grieving over Lyanna's body meaning that more than just Ned and Howland survived from the Tower of Joy. Only two combatants walk away, but there are others at the Tower. Wylla, Ashara, and Marwyn are my favorite candidates.
