Really well done by Newcastle.  Missing the penalty and then conceding a second goal was such a gut punch.  Coming back from that to win showed a ton of grit.  I know there’s a new rule about double punishment on penalties and red cards, but Pickford was very lucky.  That was one of the most cynical fouls I’ve seen.  In prior seasons that would have been a definite red card.  Since he is a bit of a penalty specialist and won’t get a red card, he has a big incentive to make that kind of cynical foul to stop a certain goal.

(just imagine the outcry if Suarez had not received a red card for handball in that WC match)

With Southampton and Cardiff both winning, Fulham and Huddersfield look well adrift now.  But the third relegation spot is still a large battle.  It looks like more points will be required for safety this season, but there are plenty of games for teams to earn some breathing room.

Edit: forgot to mention that Newcastle had also just lost Longstaff to an injury for (probably) the rest of the season.  He had been doing really well for them in recent games and they had to bounce back from that too.

The rule stopping triple punishment only applies when the player makes a genuine attempt to win the ball. Professional fouls can still be red cards, so Pickford should have been sent off.

Talking of bad decisions, Sterling’s first goal standing was a shocker. When the defender needs to make a last ditch tackle to stop you getting one on one with the keeper you are surely active. Something similar happened last year in Liverpool vs Spurs, I recall.

I hate that rule and I really hate this way of describing it. It starts from the assumption that any sending off is a 'double punishment', which is nonsense: it's a single punishment that has two effects. And it also assumes the penalty kick is a punishment to the offending team, rather than what it is, which is restoring the attacking team's advantage. The previous situation was fairer and better. It only got changed because some journalists and commentators whose understanding of the rules was shaky decided to tag it with this crappy 'triple punishment' stuff.

Sorry, rant over. :p

As you may have noticed, I am often chiding Liverpool fans on here over there moaning this season, despite their good season and for very little objective reason (yes, it's gonna be one of those posts).

Guardian stuff.

Equally, let’s not overlook the fact Liverpool have already accrued 70 points when, to put that into context, that is more than Manchester United managed at the same stage in 11 of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 13 championship wins. Liverpool have lost only once all season and are eight points better off at the 29-game mark than the nearly year, 2013-14, when Luis Suárez was picking off opposition defences. Remember the Newcastle United side, aka the Entertainers, that led the way at this stage of the 1995-96 championship chase? Klopp’s men have scored nine more goals than Kevin Keegan’s team and taken six more points. Plus it is a remarkable statistic, for such an adventurous side, that Liverpool have let in only 15 goals so far.

Even in this difficult run, when they have been restricted to 10 points out of a possible 18 and one newspaper has superimposed Klopp’s face on to Keegan’s for his own “love it” meltdown, they have kept clean sheets in their last four league fixtures, and another against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Indeed, there is only one manager who has made it to this stage of a Premier League season with a superior defensive record and that was Mourinho with Chelsea, in his absolute pomp. Only once, though.

I mean you guys are playing a great season pointwise, it just looks like that great will probably just not be enough to topple City.

After the attack, Grealish scores the only goal of the game to win it for Villa.

The Hamburg derby was a little underwhelming on the pitch by contrast. St Pauli were very poor and HSV ran away with it 4-0.

Arsenal have gone with a very attacking team. Ozil, Ramsey and Xhaka all in the same midfield is a bit of a gamble.

Feels like they want to make this game about the wide battle with the wing-backs. Risky with us playing two up front since the CBs will be quite occupied even as a three leaving Xhaka alone with Pogba, but attacking-wise it makes sense, their formation and if they can keep our wide players pinned back it works defensively too.
