Does anyone else join me in really not liking having to visit Las Vegas?

I don’t gamble and really dislike smoking.  Casinos, as a result, are among my least favorite places to be.

I get that.   I was just driving towards the question of whether a dislike of the work you re going to Vegas for taints your overall trip.  There are plenty of non gambling activities there too.  The smoke part sucks all around.

Oh fuck off with this haughty attitude.  Vegas, and specifically the strip, is a fun place to go on vacation.  In large part because most of the other people you meet are also on vacation, so it's a nice place to get drunk and hakuna matata.  I'll give you that you have to wade through the annoying drunks, but I suppose I'm just really used to that.  Anyway, same goes for Disneyworld (only been to Land a couple times very long ago).  Living in Orlando for ~7 years, my brother and I had annual passes.  Obviously it eventually grew tiresome.  But the only reason that took 4-5 years is because of going around the world at Epcot and meeting random people.  Tourist destinations are a fun way to interact, sorry if that's not good enough for you.

In my 20s, I did enjoy Vegas a lot. I was stationed in so cal, and you know, after being on a deployment or whatever it was a great place to go and fuck off for awhile, including some excessive drinking. And I enjoyed gambling as well.

The work is interesting.  The need to stay in Casinos because we get better group rates, is not.  Although we stayed in Vdara for the February trip.  That was a nice hotel.  The conference was in the Aria.

Next year a friend from work and I plan to hike Red Rock canyon.  That I’m looking forward to.  :)

Oh, fuck off with the attacks! I'm not saying anything bad about people who want to or enjoy going to Vegas. I simply don't get them at a very basic level. I don't like crowds, I don't like noisy bars, I don't like gambling, I hate smoking, I'm not a huge fan of shows and I really don't like seeing a whole lot of artificial stuff that's there entirely for artifice's sake.

And there are people who are entirely the opposite of me, and enjoy all of those things, and I do not get them. I appreciate them because they have a totally different worldview to me, and I envy them in a lot of ways - but that's not me, and as much as I've tried to make it me it never has been.

So no, you can fuck off with your bizarre insistence on taking anything I say as a personal affront.

It's not a matter of it being good enough for me or not. It's just me not enjoying that. I'd be happy to go there to meet friends and hang out with them, but I'd rather be doing it basically almost anywhere else.

As an example, I often tell the story of my wife and I going hiking in the jungle, and talking about how exciting it was to see these big-ass spiders or swim in crocodile-infested waters or see bats swooping down and catching fish in the dark. And some people think that's totally awesome! And others have noped the fuck right out when they think about crocodiles or bats or those huge spiders that the bugs from Starship Troopers were modeled after. I don't think I'm better than them because I enjoy that any more than I think I'm better than them for enjoying playing geeky board games - but they have the same kind of reaction to crocodile jungles that I do Vegas. Same goes for people who enjoy running.

(but seriously look at that spider OMG so cool!)

If you want to knock stuff off the list, you might want to drop by Hoover Dam, just to do it.

A few Some years back me and a couple guys also drove out to the Grand Canyon while we were in the city. But that's a "bit" more out of the way.

Damn, time flies.

"shrugs"

I think it was the Trump supporter reference that did it. At first glance I thought you were equating people who enjoy gambling with Trump supporters, and my initial reaction was a hostile reply too.

But on a reread I decided it was just a weird comparison.

I don't think it's necessarily an age thing.  Granted, you're gonna encounter a lot of dude-bros - of whom I've endured and embarrassed since, well, before I even started college - but you can also meet interesting people that aren't entirely vapid.  Particularly I'm thinking of examples from Epcot, but Vegas too.  And usually they're older.  Hell, sometimes that's the coolest.  Ya know I know seniors that are inspired!

Yes you did.  You essentially said anyone that enjoys Vegas is equal to or maybe worse than someone that supports Trump.  Those be fighting words where I come from.

Funny thing is, other than the fact I smoke, I agree entirely with the things you don't like.  Can still have fun in Vegas though.

See above.  I take affront with the statement that I - or anyone else - is less empathetic than a Trump supporter if you like going to Vegas.  That's literally what you said.  I was responding to what you said.  This is a discussion board.

The only thing I associate hiking in a jungle with, or any other humid, hot and steamy ass forest, is a very bad case of crotch rot, cursing myself for not bringing more gold bond powder. And I want little to do with spiders, snakes, and crocodiles or any other creepy critter. Give me a nice air conditioned room.

But, I suppose, we all get our kicks differently. And that is okay.

For me it is because once I got into my thirties I just didn't enjoy drinking as much. And I pretty much stopped. And I'm a bit more sensitive to noise and crowds too.

Yeah it's actually hard for me to remember the last real vacation I went on.  I see my parents twice a year, and we basically just sit around, so I don't think that counts.  I guess it'd be when I met my sister and her fiance on July 4th in Philly.  But yeah, in general I don't travel as much as I was inclined to in my twenties.  Honestly it's just a hassle.

Vegas is like a monument to the folly of man.  I am a seriously low-key person IRL.  I cultivate a small group of friends and typically do not like a lot of noise or attention.  In my everyday life I only like quiet pub-ish kind of bars if I’m going to a bar at all, which these days I most often am not going to the bar.

But... I do enjoy small doses of Las Vegas, even though it is definitely the opposite of my regular scene, because - fuck it.  It’s there, it’s ridiculous, it’s garish, it’s completely over the top, but most importantly it’s fun.  I think a lot of people who haven’t been there and think they wouldn’t like it might be surprised.  To those who have been there and don’t like it, to each thier own, it’s not hard for me to see why.

Honestly though if a foreigner was planning a trip to the US and wanted a top 5 list of cities to visit, I don’t think having Las Vegas as one of them would be a bad call.  I wouldn’t recommend it AT ALL if it was the only place, but as one of many, I think it presents an interesting aspect of American culture. It’s kind of like America to the absolute ridiculous extreme.  I can personally recognize the absurdity of it and enjoy it at the same time.

This positioning in which you have to explain why you like going to Vegas like it's somehow shameful is fucking ridiculous.  This is my beef, Kal.

It's not shameful! Who the fuck cares?

Again, I chose my words carefully. I do not understand on a very basic level how people do indeed like it. Just like I do not understand on a basic level how people enjoy watching trump speak. This is something I, personally, can never empathize with. I do not get it. I didn't say they were less empathetic - I said I cannot empathize with them. And I really can't.

I didn't say that it was bad, and I know it isn't bad. It's entirely my failing in being able to get it, and it's a good sign of my personal anxiety and issues - but it makes my personal view of it no less accurate to me. When I go to these supposedly awesome bars and night clubs and casinos and see people enjoying it and having a great time, it personally fills me with sadness. Hell, thinking about it right now makes me anxious.

One of my friends wedding was there, and hes exactly that guy and he goes to Vegas twice a year or more. He loves parties and being with people and the bar scene, and ugh. I'll never be able to understand or enjoy that.

If you enjoy that, good for you. For me - as I said before - it is close to the antithesis of what I dont like.

Well, that was hard to parse out.  And I don't think I'm responsible for such confusion.

Yeah, again, generally I'm with you there, even as an alcoholic.  I don't like doing that shit.

To make this personal, my sister's fiance invited me and my brother to all of his bachelor events.  He was  just being nice, but my brother and I - both of which are no strangers to debauchery - agreed it would be weird, unless under certain circumstances.  I don't get strip clubs.  Like, literally, I don't understand the initial appeal.  If you're that desperate, do it when I'm not around.

Well I’m not trying to convert Kal, he’s clearly got his mind made up.  I’m just posting for the people who have not been and don’t think they would like it.  They might be wrong about that, becuase I was.  Las Vegas is the opposite of my typical scene, but I still find it to be a pretty good time.

I lived in Vegas for around 5 years,  moved to the midwest in 2012 and do not really have much desire to revisit Vegas in the forseeable future.

Regarding the desert heat I found myself going quite nocturnal, doing things like grocery shopping or catching a movie at 3 a.m. During the daylight, if I wasnt working I stayed in the pool 75% of anytime because thats all I really could put up with in that heat.

Since I worked on the strip daily, my experience as a local was much different than a tourist of course. You learn quite quickly how and where to purchase things for about a third of what a tourist would pay. A surprisingly lot of the locals I knew did not ever gamble. Its actually one of the very most boring things to do on the strip to me.

Anyways as a few people hinted earlier the funnest thing to do in Vegas is to leave it and go visit the great stuff outside Vegas. A few of my favorites used to be-

Zion National Park, if you have to pick between Zion, Bryce or the Grand, i'd pick Zion although all 3 are within easing driving distance.

Mt. Charleston, I went skiing out here a few times and its really a fun place and scenic.

Another fun place is a ways below the Dam where theres actually some nice sandy shores on Lake Mojave at a place called Cottonwood Cove, just turn left once you reach Searchlight and keep going till you hit the water, its positively Cali-ish.

So yeah yeah Vegas can be enjoyed, all you have to do is have the good sense to leave it and go visit the fun stuff outside the valley.B)
