Can you recommend a good mockumentry?

Try What We Do in the Shadows - comedy vampire doc.  It's a film, and has recently been adapted into a TV show. The director, who also plays a lead role in the film, is Taika Waititi of Thor: Ragnarok and Hunt for the Wilderpeople fame.

This is Spinaltap, Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind. But I'm sure everyone knew about those already.

Netflix has a documentary series called 7 Days Out https://www.netflix.com/title/80207124 -- which is a collection of 1 hour episodes about the lead up to significant events -- the first episode is on the Westminster Dog Show. It is amazing. It feels like a beat for beat remake of Best in Show ... except that it is a real documentary. I thought it was hysterical.

I'll also second Documentary Now -- my only quibble is it is MUCH better to watch episodes where you having seen the documentary before. Their satire is so perfect with amazing attention to detail. The Stop Making Sense one was great, but I think DRONEZ is my favorite. Jack Black as Shane Smith is *chef's kiss*.

Garth Merenghi's Darkplace is SUPERB, and is perfect for anyone who loves fantasy and sci-fi. It is a British comedy programme from the early 2000s, starring and co-written by Richard Ayoade, about a pompous sci-fi author talking about his great lost series which (he claims) was banned for being too subversive (although the truth is that it was probably just canned for being rubbish). Each episode consists of an episode of the lost series, with the author and cast giving a sort of commentary. It is brilliant, and great fun. :)

American VandalWhat We Do in the ShadowsBest in Show.

Also, the original British The Office.

American vandal is the most obvious recent one and What we do in the shadowshas just started as a TV show as well.

The BBC has some great mockumentaries going back a long way. Brass Eye and various phases of Alan partridge cross-over into mockumentary. There was also a great mockumentary by Rob Brydon called "director's commentary" which was him doing DVD commentary over video clips where he pretended to be their director Peter de lane.

Look around you - was arguably more a spoof tv show but did an excellent job of taking the piss out of 70s/80s science shows.

"People like us" was also very good and was about a never seen documentary maker who followed "regular folk" and was very good but largely forgotten as it was out at the same time as "the office"

This last one is a cheat as it isn't a mockumentary but LouisTheroux's early work "weird weekends" seems like a parody of his recent work. The comedy is arguably more effective/dark because it's real. For instance this was the format his Jimmy Saville episode was done in - it was disturbing at the time and is probably unwatchable now.

Popstar: Never Stop, Never Stopping is a pretty funny mocumentary if you enjoy Andy Samberg/Lonely Island type humor.

Can also check out his HBO mockumentaries

7 Days in Hell, about the longest tennis match at Wimbledon

and Tour de Pharmacy, about doping in cycling.

I think people soured on People Like Us because of star and co-writer Chris Langham, who was arrested and convicted for downloading significant quantities of child porn. That kind of takes the enjoyment out of watching his stuff.

I'm not sure if it counts, but if we're counting Brass Eye, we also need to count The Day Today, a fake TV news show which feels by today's standards like an actual news show.

That explains why that show disappeared!

I was debating where spoof news shows fall as they do blur between mockumentary and straight forward comedy but the "investigative journalism" in brass eye is luke a documentary.

These are the ones I most recommend also.  This is Spinal Tap is my favorite comedy of all time if I had to pick just one.

Ok guys really appreciate the suggestions. They all sound like things worth checking out at least. I tried tuning into the British Office before but I don’t know I just wasn’t feeling it.

Anerican Vandal I’ve already watched. Loved it too,

Oh and trailer park boys was good up to the 10th season.

Man Bites Dog, (C'est arrive pres de chez vous). Belgian crime mockumentary where the filmmakers follow around a serial killer. Dark, but also morbidly funny.

ETA:  How could I forget to mention CB4?!!!!
