Opinion: Coolest Sounding Name

Recommended Posts

Traditionally hero names in fiction should be short (ideally single syllable), sharp and if it has a double meaning to phonetically suggest something cool then even better. Surnames like Knight (from Night Rider), Hawke (Airwolf pilot), Max Payne (from the video game of the same name), John Wick etc come to mind.

Martin hit all of those marks and more when he named Jon Snow. The best name in the series by far.

Agree with so many of these.

I may have just missed earlier mentions, but also want to give a shout out to:

Olenna Redwyne

Barbrey Dustin

Mirri Maz Duur

And I like the odd nicknames that say something about the person:

Aegon "Bloodborn" Frey

Petyr Pimple

Lommy Greenhands

Strongboar

The Sword of the Morning

Stonesnake

I think we see some of this in characters like Bronn, Shae, Griff and Grenn, Pyp, Toad. Although they are not necessarily heroes, they tend to represent aspects of our heroes.

You didn't mention one name which is badass - Gerold the Golden.

Others I like,

Harry Strickland. I always see it like 'stripped of land'.

Maelys Blackfyre

Jacaerys Velaryon

Lucerys Velaryon

Corlys Velaryon

Larys Strong

Aurane Waters

Lucifer Justman but generally Lucifer

Rennifer Longwaters

Lyn Corbray

Harrag Hoare

Aerion Brightflame

Jaehaerys

Gargon 'the Guest' Qoherys

I have a few that pop out to me...

-Rhaegar Targaryen always stood out. The mystery behind his character and the almost legendary status add to the allure. And also... I grew up playing the old NES Dragon Warrior games, and the character Ragnar from DW4 was badass... I know they're not the same name, but the similarity hits.

-Barristan "The Bold" is just cool. It has a great feel when you say it.

-Ser Arthur Dayne, The Sword of the Morning has such a legendary sound to it, and the nod toward the Arthurian legend is a nice touch.

I always loved the Targaryen names and names of Valyrian descent, they just sound so poetic and cool
