"Training" him to walk around the neighborhood was easy -- it was just an acclimation process and he ventured further and further out everytime. In the beginning, if he got spooked he'd dart back to the front door and I'd just let him back in. It took maybe 3-4 trips before he stopped getting spooked. He always walked himself out the doors when I'd open them and look at the doorknobs when I got near before then, however.

I think a nearby neighborhood with low car and foot traffic might be the best bet, and letting him out on his leash and harness. Unfortunately he won't have a homebase to run back to.  

Has he used the cat backpack before? I have leash cats but I don’t think they’d enjoy a cat backpack at all. The jostling and trying to balance could have caused the vomiting too

KoN, very sorry to hear this.  We have a Russian Blue as well - she is a rescue (I know, very rare to get a $1500 cat with papers as a rescue) as her 1st owner rapidly developed Alzheimer's and became very abusive towards her, and she needed to be rehomed quickly.  She's turned around now, and is the best companion we could ask for.  I'm not sure how I would handle the news you've gotten...

Good for you for taking care of your Blue now, I hope your cat gets spoiled rotten.

Covid Foster, Day 18:  Breakthrough!

The shelters around here closed for the virus and they made a last ditch effort to adopt as many as possible and then the leftovers were sent to foster in order to weather the storm.

For 18 days this sweet little guy didn't want anything to do with me but yesterday he came out and started to realize the possibilities of being adored by a human.  His nature is very sweet, he was just scared shitless.

This is the longest it's ever taken for me to seduce a cat but it's worth it.  If he had been adopted he may have been rejected, "what's wrong with you?  I just want to love you!"  Because we are stuck together for a long period of time, hopefully he can be rehabilitated and learn to enjoy being part of a human household.

Bailey would never bite you. She just might need to use her mouth like a hand and pull on you. From time to time.

Oh no, they are not. Purring is a huge asset along with cats generally allowing you to go on vacation while they stay home alone, and they live a lot longer and smell exponentially better. Dogs are also good, but cats are excellent and superb pets. Kittens (and puppies also) are bitey assholes, but only for a little while. 
 

My beloved Guava is always 100% good, never does anything bad and is a sweet baby who just wants me to carry him around and smooch him. He was the worst kitten I have ever seen- a total fucking nightmare. Now he’s perfect. I’ll take that couple months of suffering being climbed like a tree and all my toilet paper being shredded for the 16 perfect years since. 
 

Once I was doing some urgent business in the bathroom that could not be interrupted. I realized, with horror, there was a spider repelling down from the ceiling and would end up directly in my pants. I did not want the spider in my hands or my pants and I could not take a time out for spider removal. Luckily, Guava doesn’t let me go anywhere alone at home and he also saw the spider. Guava, my hero, ate the spider before it could be lost forever in my pants.

1-not true. Other than his highness Prince Guava, my cats are car and leash cats. They come to the bookstore. Fernando and Hector go everywhere.

1. They need to meet Frank then. He's a big orange cat. Not sure if Nate still does it, but when he lived in Uptown he'd ride his bike around with Franky on his back. 

2. Puppies play bite. Cats just bite, and they do it for their whole lives. Many a beer have been spilled because some woman's cat attacked my feet from underneath the couch.

3. Well circling back, maybe you wouldn't like to meet Frank after all. You might like his goofy self, but his human is probably a long list of things you don't like (white dude with a big man bun biking everywhere).

Just wanted to interject with my own cat-happiness story. 

I have been thinking of getting cats for around 9 years - since the last of my previous beloved pair of second-hand cats died (around 1 year apart) - it was a traumatic experience so it took me over a year to feel ready again, but because I have a long-distance relationship with another (westeros) boarder, I felt I couldn't get more cats because I was away every month or so.  But my next door neighbour is another cat-lover and said he would be very happy to look after cats for me -indeed we discussed possible sharing cats - but in the end I decided that was impractical (someone - me - would be paying the vet bills etc, and would want the cats to be in my house if so!) so in December I decided that I would get a pair of cats and my neighbour could look after them when I was away.  

I hadn't got around to pursuing this further, but one weekend a month ago I had a weekend free, and as it became clear that I would very soon be working at home due to coronavirus, I went to one of the local Cat & Dog shelters.  I have been there before, last time I had thought about getting a cat again - they are really good and asked me lots of questions to establish which cats I might be suited for - then gave me the names of two pairs of cats they had in the shelter that day which they had matched with me (e.g. quiet home, no children).  I went to look at the cats: in each pair, there was one cat inside the cage hidden, and one out.  One of the cats was beautiful, all black, but hissed at me (well, it's not ideal circumstances), but the cat from the other pair (also beautiful - an unusually grey tabby) came out I arrived and rubbed against my hand.  So I expressed an interest in seeing more of the latter pair, and they arranged for me to see both cats in the pair in a special 'socialisation' space with chairs and cat toys and catnip.  During this time they totally stole my heart - the grey tabby "Winnie" was just so inquisitive and alive, and her 'brother' (I can't believe they are actually related, just brought up together), supposedly more shy, a really big black and white tomcat "Vincent", rubbed against me and was just so shiny and solid and well just a loveable chonk.  Well, I was totally smitten, so I 'reserved' them. Both the shelter and I insisted on a 24 hour thinking time, but the next day I just had no doubts and rang to say I would get them (my neighbour came with me to check them out and transport them), so I paid the dues without hesitation. 

So they came home and I have now had them four weeks, and they are the best cats ever!  They have just the right balance of quirkiness and affection, and have been astonishingly good at not waking me up early each morning - indeed they are quite laid-back about being fed in the morning.  I like that they are completely different from each other as well, but also one of them washes the other one, so there is a bond between them.  Winnie continues to be extremely friendly and affectionate - and also a complete mischief as she loves to trap and run off with my biros and any other small objects like wine-bottle-tops, and Vincent is shyer but that just makes it more moving when I find him curled up on my bed when I wake up in the morning.  Basically I am besotted and have bought them a cat tree and cat toys and whatever they do I adore them!  (If only my boyfriend could be with me, it would be perfect, but they help me pass the time and I'm not sure where I'd be without them - cats - you have to love them).

My cats are a delight.

For some reason my cat hates loud breathing. I just got done biking on my stationary bike and was breathing heavily by the end. He kept making the "errp"  noise he makes when he's irritated and even rolled over on his side while looking at me. My breathe slowed before he might have started making his angry meows. It also helped that he just ate. If he was hungry and grumpy I think he definitely would have been making these short, sharp "rowrs!" lol.

Well talk about a mid-day bummer. My mom called to say she has to go put down my grandfather's cat. She's one of the biggest maine coons I've ever seen. Chole was super shy, but once she warmed up to you she was more like a dog than a cat.

She's damn near 20 though. It's time.

Fernando absolutely crushed his walk last night. He stayed focused, he didn’t have to be carried across streets, he didn’t wanna go back in. Nando is officially a cat about town. I live in a busy Minneapolis neighborhood and got Fernando as an adult from a rescue (he’d been picked up as a stray and had some emotional trauma), for any cat these are huge accomplishments but Nando is fucking killing it.

My cat has been puking once a week or so since last month. At the start, he had appetite loss that built up over about three days. He barely ate anything by the third day, so I took him to the vet ER. His blood test and urine analysis thankfully turned out fine, which the vet said ruled out some scary possibilities. She said they could do a sonogram or chest x-ray, don't remember which, or let him go home with meds for nausea and lack of appetite to see how he does. I chose to give him the meds and his appetite seemed back to normal by the second day. 

 

I'm going to schedule an appointment for another test since he keeps vomiting. His behavior has been normal otherwise, as well as his appetite. His vet doesn't seem to think there's anything serious going on. I'm wondering what's going on but don't feel too worried at this point.
