Epic Rant

This is good. I had to keep pausing because I have avoided listening to the Outside the Episodes, do not want to hear them ever again.

One more thing and I’ll stop, I promise.

Why in the world do they think that taking season 1-2 quotes and altering their context passes off as writing? I get that they would base the entire season on Lotr and I get that they would copy and paste dragon visuals from Avatar and Harry Potter. But they even take their exact lines from elsewhere. What level of pathetic is that? It’s basically admitting that they are unable to write a single original page of script. Is this supposed to be creative or epic or emotional?

Because that's what cheap writers do. And not only them but also people writing shows. There comes a point when people start to indulge in meta-humor and self-referencing. It is always childish but here it is especially nonsensical because it makes it so apparent that those people don't even pretend to play real characters. They are just walking clichés.

I hope that history will eventually take note that the show, GOT, became every tired cliche and troped up fantasy trope that it originally, when it was still an adaptation, strove to subvert.

Well, it basically stopped being an adaptation after season 1 - and even there were some unpleasant and unimaginative deviations from the source material. People rarely think how great an interesting a character Cersei and Catelyn could have been had they been their real selves. Especially Cersei. She is a rather complex character and her passionate outbursts could have been really great scenes.

But I think I've already pointed that out somewhere else - the re-watch value of this show should quickly drop to zero. Who is going to watch that shit when you already know every twist and nothing is going to surprise you? And when you know that things are going to get as bad as you know they will? That's not going to be fun.

4 minutes ago, Cas Stark said:

Yes, that is exactly what they admit, only so few people realize that about 90% of the best lines and best scenes came from the books.  Other than chaos is a ladder, I can't even think of any memorable lines at all that the show came up with. Almost every line that Syrio ever spoke to Arya was a book line, all of Mel's good lines, from the book, Tyrion and Varys were witty and had good lines also, when there was still book dialogue to use.

Well, the ladder stuff is good meta-commentary on Littlefinger the book character, but Aidan Gillen learned how to climb it up, no ;-)? It is the kind of thing Littlefinger would, perhaps, allude to in a very secure environment, sort of how he alluded to this fact to Sansa in AFfC, but it is not exactly great writing, either.

Oh, shit, now I imagined for a moment that Littlefinger could really have been one of the scariest characters on television if they had actually written and presented him as everybody's best friend who still honestly jokes with you while he is cutting your throat. That would have been scary.

Varys is a completely useless character in the show for quite some time. There are light years between George's Varys - and Conleth really played that guy for, I'd say, at least the first 2-3 seasons; he was a little bit toned down and changed but he clearly was the character from the books - and what they did to him when he became Tyrion's traveling companion.

He is a very good character to illustrate how important good dialogue and directing is for a character and how little talent these two guys actually have.

One more thing: this is the second episode in a row that makes it seem like they composited Ghost into a couple shots after filming wrapped because they forgot about him.  They didn't even have a full walk cycle on him.  How he survived the suicide charge at the start and why Jon didn't care is just left for us to try not to think about.

The bit of the next episode's preview that shows him alive shows the exact same camera angle as episode 2's shot of him, which makes me think it'll be more of the same.

Oh my god, don’t even get my started on ghost. Thank goodness I’m a dragon person, if I were a direwolf fan, this ghost ordeal would tear my brain apart.

And sadly, you make an excellent point. I can totally see they would forget about him and photoshop him into some stills. God they are so pathetic.

You're telling me they don't know about horseback archery?

We saw Dothraki shoot from the saddle while charging in their battle against the Lannister-Tarly army.

I have a question... what is worse, a pitch black episode where no one can see a damn thing and has virtually no dialogue, or a well-lit (hopefully?) episode where nothing happens and all we get is 90 mins of D&D’s “writing”?

I think I prefer the former. But sadly we’re in for ~ 180 minutes of the latter. :bang:

You actually expect dialogue and plot in the next episodes? You won't get it. They deliberately strive to use as little dialogue as possible. It is all about the faces.

And didn't you guys all see the meaningful glances and non-verbal emotional exchange between Bran and the Lich King fellow? Everything got clear from those looks, no?

Yep.  Make no mistake, they keep track of things that are being said and written online.  They're certainly not above letting that stuff influence them and indulging in a whole lotta fan-service.  So...this is what the audience gets with Ghost:rolleyes:

Welcome!

As for contributions, the way I see it is this:

<snip>

I agree with everything you said except Melisandre.  I feel like every arch just got obliterated by this episode.  Every bit of foreshadowing just blew up in our faces, for the sole purpose of 'subverting expectations'.

I'm just doing what I can to give what I saw some sort of logic, even if it's a stretch at best and BS at worst.

Also, can't we just be allowed to forget that certain aspects of season 6, episode 8 ever happened instead of using them to justify something else later? Nothing should be based on that absolute evisceration of logic, science and reality.

Evisceration?  Isn't that what those knife wounds basically should have done to Arya in that episode anyway.  Granted, the cuts were in the wrong direction, but there were so many of them that it shouldn't have mattered.  Gods, I am still pissed at that one.  There was no reason for it.  They didn't have to give her those type of wounds, they chose to do it.  They chose to go for the shock of the stabbing, then left the ass kissing audience to help wave it away.  Still, who'd have thunk they'd totally eviscerate the entire WW and Northern story in such, pardon the pun, gutting fashion?

I would never in a million years expect a [coherent] plot from the Ds. But dialogue? I guess there’ll be no avoiding that. We still have roughly 4 1/2 hours, and even these hacks can’t try to pull off 4 1/2 hours of stares... so, there will be dialogues. Bad jokes, cock[less] jokes and whatever other bad jokes they feel like making us suffer through, and more? It should be proper excruciating, but there’ll be no avoiding it. That’s why I’d rather have pitch black scenes where no one says anything.

So Arya is Captain Marvel, but way more OP. As if that was possible. She could take out Thanos as well with such plot armor.

You know when you watch a BELOVED show, probably the greatest TV show of all time and then 1 episode is so bad, it kills your love for the show ? This was that episode.I was expecting some consequences, major deaths, greatly lit battle scenes, some great exposition, SENSE, past moments to connect and make sense of everything and all we got was a 99% dark episode where you could barely see a thing, no major characters die, so many scenes THAT ARE DUMB, make no sense, all that build up with Mel and Jon, Jon and the NK and a little girl kills the NK just like that, while he was surrounded by dozens of WW's, when the NK could sense Jon from a mile away. And all this lead up of Jons heritage being important LMFAO, noe of it mattered. BRAN DIDN't MATTER. That was the worst. All that warging, those looks with the NK, for nothing. What was the fckng POINT of all the previous seasons, all that build up ? People used to praise GOT for killing off major characters, and defending the show for being ''REALISTIC''. I ask you, how realistic is it for a little girl to be stronger than Thanos ? Fucking hell, Arya could take out Baba Yaga as well at this rate. Her character arc is the worst. I like empowerment, look at Brienne. Perfect example. Arya is so OP it doesn't even make sense.

Why even have 3 more episodes ? Just send Arya all alone to Kings Landing, she could take out those 20.000+ soldiers and take out Cersei as well. Save us the trouble.

telling Arya what she had to do and giving her a pep talk.

But she didn't tell Arya what to do. Besides by implication kill the Night King. (Assuming Jon told everyone his eyes are blue.)

It would be one thing if Melisandre showed Arya a secret passage to the godswood Ned and Cat never told her about, or guided her through fire to get to where she could attack. Or just told her where to stab. But none of that.

That would have made the scene meaningful.

I have no idea how D&D don t realise that for a huge number of people last episode was the end of the series. Now we have 3 eps of epilogue with a batle agains the drunk queen, the horny pirate and the new dudes… Even if they make an amazing battle the is no hype for the episode...

That is a huge problem, Instead of making a series that becomes a classic the show turned out to be a some crap you see once in your life, are surprised and never want to see it again because it isn t fulfilling.

We had years of building hype and interest and these last episodes simply ruined all the core thematics of asoiaf and even got history in order to subvert expectations and have weird visual impacts and wow moments...

They made that a TV show? Why would anyone want to do that? :dunno:

Good question, and in retrospect, they really, really shouldn’t have. To give you an idea of how bad it was, they butchered the books! And the whole thing was a sort of high school soft porn fantasy that was actually rather painful to watch. :D

Jon will spend the entire season without talking to ghost or presenting him to danny and her friends… How can anyone explain this shit?

Oh God, Ser Arthur Dayne Two-Swords of the Morning. Along with cocky Ned. And the throwaway Howland. God, that scene sucked.

You mean Neil Patrick Harris Ned.

I liked the part where Dayne whipped out his swords like "Pchow!" And the fact that Ned won because Howland cheated. But the rest was weird. Like a music video missing its synth track.

Sure, there should be somewhat more dialogue in at least two of the coming episodes (if, say, episode 5, is another major battle) but they can really minimize or completely reduce dialogue even in those. Think of all those meaningful chair-shuffling and walking into Dragonstone scenes we got. I'm sure walking around meaningfully in KL/the Red Keep could be interesting, too. Or the Golden Company meaningfully marching and standing at attention.

There certainly will be bad jokes and pointless self-referencing crap, though.

Thankfully Jonathan Pryce is long dead. That guy actually far too many pointless lines for my taste.

For once we agree. :D

And I adore Jonathan Pryce... but gods be good, what an awful and annoying character.
