How will they deal with the ballistaes?

Recommended Posts

Will someone as in Jon and what's left of our usual heroes ninja into city to burn them? Drogon on a night mission flying above along the wall and burning them all? The whole Dany / North army being brain dead again (see Dothraki charge) and simply suicide Drogon into them?

However the plot decides.

Seriously, the ballistae and the way they work is such a cheap deus ex machina, made only to balance the playing field between the two remaining armies.

I'm not even gonna bother predicting how they will deal with them, because unlike D&D, I can't completely turn of my logical thinking when I think about something. However they are dealt with, will be in a way that makes little to no sense.

They obviously need to attack from another side. Quite vertically down or from whereever. A dark night would be better.

Cersei infuriated Daenerys so she will attack immediately, probably. That's a bad idea, though.

Any thoughts about the massive stupidity in the plot twist of using ballistas as ship artillery smashing an enemy fleet into smithereens from a considerable distance?

Not only the fact that spears fired from long distance apparently flew in an extremely flat trajectory - implying an equally extreme starting velocity and thus also extreme lauch energy - but also the immense speed with which the ballistas were apparently reloaded, considering the huge swarms of projectiles hammering into Dany's fleet.

And Euron must indeed have had considerable time for target practise unless the 3 plus hits scored on Rhaegal were pure luck. Hitting a flying object with a single projectile sure is no easy feat.

Qyburn has redefined warfare in Westeros. Who needs dragons with easily constructed, accurate, reliable, cheap ballistae around?

I try to forget that entire scene, it's right down there with the scene from The Last Jedi where space warfare is redefined forever after a single moment when a small ship destroys a vastly bigger ship by simply ramming it during light-speed.

Indeed. They are really strong and disintegrate ships totally.

I guess you're right there. And all in all I have to say that the overall quality of the show has sunk constantly over the last three seasons since they ran out of books to rely on. Even if GRRM is said to be involved in the creation of the storyline for the show it's become a lot less interesting to watch. I don't know if it's me as well, but I suddenly feel like I'm watching The Bold and The Beautiful or something, and I just can't bring myself to care anymore. I'll obviously watch the final episodes just to see how it turns out, but I can't bring myself to feel emotional about it.

All through The Long Night I was pretty much just waiting to see who would finally kill the night king and find out which characters would still be alive after the battle. The fact that it all took place in darkness making it hard to see who was who and what was going on didn't make it more interesting either...

After ruining the ww arc last ep, the balistae destroyed the dragon mith this ep.

What is the point of having dragons when anyone with half a dozen balistas can simply kill them? If they were planning in making a prequel with dragons I think now it is very dificult… Unless they give the dragons armor to protect them… This just sounds ridiculous…

Given that they can destroy boats what will these things do when shot agains an army? it would be a slaughter.

They seem to be more accurate and effective than modern surface to air missiles.

She could dive the dragon like a Stuka. I doubt those scorpions can aim straight up.

That seems the best idea.  Fly high enough to be out of range, and then dive at a steep angle.

I would think Cersei would have ballistaes all around the walls of KL. Having them on only one side seems stupid but I wouldn't put it past D&D doing it. Attacking them in a similar way Aegon the Conqueror attacked Harrenhal could work

She should have already done this and Euron and his fleet would be destroyed already.   Of course if she had sieged KL when she was at full power, Cersei would already be dead and all her dragons and Dothraki alive.

The showrunners don't care about even pretending to try to make the battle tactics realistic.

^This.

But as an exercise, my take is this: The vertical dive bomb could work, but only if there aren't additional lines of scorpions. We saw the walls of KL, but if Cersei/Euron/Qyburn were smart, there would be additional scorpions throughout the city. The Red Keep, at least, ought to have a bunch. Basically make any angle of approach difficult. So then what can Dany's forces do? It really shouldn't just be about the dragon. Bring your own artillery, which they had at Winterfell. Use trebuchet to smash the scorpions off the towers. Based on what we saw, they have no protection, they're pretty easy targets. The city will have to be taken layer by layer.

Also, I noticed that the scorpions on the towers are so big, that the people can only use them if they're pointed upwards. They're taller than an adult person, and they would need a ladder to operate the wheels and levers. They couldn't have taken Dany and her escort out, even if they wanted to.

If I remember correctly that's what the Conqueror did to Harrenhal, isn't it?

Yep. They talked about it in the Season 7 Histories and Lore.

Dragon armor.....

Plus Daenerys armor. One of those bolts almost headshot her and if she's killed, Drogon's going to be impossible to control. Though if they can punch through dragon hide, it might be pointless.

Harrenhal had no scorpions!  Not sure why people keep repeating them.  Harrenhalf was the first place Aegon destroyed with dragons, thats why it worked so well as no one in westeros had ever seen dragons, much less fought against them.  Harrenhal had super high walls so that no one could simly scale them or use ladders and was thought of as siege proof.  Aegon simply flew over them and melted the main castle towers with the lords still inside.  Then the city surrendered.

Dorne was last on his list, which was a mistake as they had time to build balista's, which they probably had memory of using against the Valarians back in Essos since Dorne was mostly settled by Ghia refugee's fleeing the valaryian dragons to begin with.

That would be the logical thing to do as Qyburn has created OP ballista's making the dragons absolutely useless.

The ballista's must have aim bot, that's the only logical explanation for the wind and a rocking boat not interfering with the 100% accuracy, It's the Westeros equivalent of the noob tube just fire away and wait for the kill.
