How will they deal with the ballistaes?

Qyburn has redefined warfare in Westeros. Who needs dragons with easily constructed, accurate, reliable, cheap ballistae around?

Remember, Urine is there with him.  He built 1000 ships from rock and sand in like a week.

But as an exercise, my take is this: The vertical dive bomb could work, but only if there aren't additional lines of scorpions. We saw the walls of KL, but if Cersei/Euron/Qyburn were smart, there would be additional scorpions throughout the city. The Red Keep, at least, ought to have a bunch. Basically make any angle of approach difficult. So then what can Dany's forces do? It really shouldn't just be about the dragon. Bring your own artillery, which they had at Winterfell. Use trebuchet to smash the scorpions off the towers. Based on what we saw, they have no protection, they're pretty easy targets. The city will have to be taken layer by layer.

Also, I noticed that the scorpions on the towers are so big, that the people can only use them if they're pointed upwards. They're taller than an adult person, and they would need a ladder to operate the wheels and levers. They couldn't have taken Dany and her escort out, even if they wanted to.

And we know those trebuchets at Winterfell should not be overused, since they were only fired one time each. But they also might not have much range, since they were placed in front of the lines. So who knows. :dunno:

Harrenhal had no scorpions!  Not sure why people keep repeating them.  Harrenhalf was the first place Aegon destroyed with dragons, thats why it worked so well as no one in westeros had ever seen dragons, much less fought against them.  Harrenhal had super high walls so that no one could simly scale them or use ladders and was thought of as siege proof.  Aegon simply flew over them and melted the main castle towers with the lords still inside.  Then the city surrendered.

Dorne was last on his list, which was a mistake as they had time to build balista's, which they probably had memory of using against the Valarians back in Essos since Dorne was mostly settled by Ghia refugee's fleeing the valaryian dragons to begin with.

Who?

I'm pretty sure scorpions were common knowledge in Westeros even then, just not heavily used.

Well in that case, you're incorrect. It was Rhoynish refugees who came to Dorne, led by Princess Nymeria. https://awoiaf.westeros.org/index.php/Nymeria

And Dorne wasn't empty before them. It had houses of Andals and First Men. The Martells were there long before the Rhoynish came, and they united.

ah it appears I have failed Essos history 101.   Same idea though, people that had lost to the dragonlords fled to Dorne, hence they were the only ones in Westeros that had any experience fighting against Dragons.

At any rate I can't find any mention of scorpions/balista's used outside of Dorne anywhere including Harrenhal. But lack of mention dosent mean they didn't exist I suppose.

On a side note the roman one in real life was capable of firing 3-4 bolts a minute if you didn't care about accuracy heh

If they wheeled the trebuchets from WF (hey, they were already parked out front, right?) and launched fireballs at the ballistas it could make for one hell of a siege warfare shitshow that would rival Jaime/Bronn fighting the Sand Snakes in Dorne.

Why would it be a shit show? Well, I suppose because D&D can't write a good warfare scene to save their lives, but the idea of it is in line with how medieval artillery worked.

Will someone as in Jon and what's left of our usual heroes ninja into city to burn them? Drogon on a night mission flying above along the wall and burning them all? The whole Dany / North army being brain dead again (see Dothraki charge) and simply suicide Drogon into them?

Night mission makes sense. They can’t see.

Too many to burn with a small strike team.

Not sure Dany would have time to make armour for the dragon.

It would be a shit show because it would make sense, and I think at this point we can rule out that kinda stuff.

I try to forget that entire scene, it's right down there with the scene from The Last Jedi where space warfare is redefined forever after a single moment when a small ship destroys a vastly bigger ship by simply ramming it during light-speed.

wow that movie sucks tho

If you meant Ghiscari refugees, that is not correct. Dorne was settled by the Rhoynar. Valyria destroyed their civilization so Nymeria evacuated what was left of them.

I so wish the prequel/spinoff show was based on the Rhoynar/Valyrian wars long before GoT’s.  You’d have fire magic vs water magic.  Heroes & villains on both sides of the war.  Same with love crossing the lines.  All ending with Nymeria (who we’ve seen grow from a child to a young woman over 7-8 years) leading the last survivors on the thousand ships for Dorne.  Maybe even blur the timelines a bit and have the Targs be a small Valyrian house who has a child with visions of the Doom & show them fleeing for Dragonstone.  It’s so much political intrigue & warfare & Dragons & love & magic & space to create a new world similar but different to Thrones.  Why would they go The Long Night prequel after the way the NK went out?  Go with the Rhoynar vs Valyrian Freehold.  The pieces just scream fantasy epic.

Right?  Placing ranged units like catapults and trebuchets in front of the meat shield melee units is WAY better than keeping the fragile ranged units in back!

I don't think they'd have the manpower to get them over the trench dug around winterfell.  If it suddenly reappeared.

All they need to do to nullify the ballistae is reverse the polarity of the targeting system, which Bran saw the Braavosi do once.

Maybe Dany hatches a dozen more dragons and they have invented Power food for dragon growth from Valyria (tm) samples of which Jorah had found and just forgot to tell Dany (luckily he did with his dying words point her to the recipe that was surprisingly easy to manufacture) and they all attack the ballistas at once - it's ok for the rest of the dragons to die in the process as long as Dany and Drogon survive.

What do you mean, "not realistic?" That is a bit beside the point by now considerin Euron's magic fleet and futuristic surface to air missiles from the 25th century they gave Team Cersei. :)

But no. Team Ninja it will be. The heroes will spread out a bit and we will see them set fire on a couple of ballistaes and [cut scene] two of them will remain so there is a bit of suspense if they hit Drogon or not during the battle. One of them will but it's only a flesh wound..

The ballista as displayed here themselves is a terrible addition. They seem to work nothing like a real world weapon should behave and are literally being used as some sort of uber-weapon simply to make both sides seem equal.

In reality they would have lost range and power way before they reached the height of the dragons flying, they would be affected by gravity and basic physics after all!
To be so dammed accurate as to hit a fast moving dragon from that range multiple times.....just appeared ridiculous. Like some sort of fan-made nonsense a teenager or the producers thought would look cool.

And when they shot at the Targ ships.....how did they again not loose power or range? What were they made of that they flew so far and maintained their kinetic energy that well that they could punch through a whole ship and presumably one which is somewhat armoured?

Basically in a real fight they would have been big crossbows, or maybe shooting large stone balls/ flaming pots. In these last few episodes they seem to have been replaced with railguns.

She literally just needs to attack with drogon at night and could blast them all off the walls. But it would be so dark you’d hardly know what was going on so scrap that idea..

I knew they'd see my story!

After D&D approved my idea about heat-seeking ballistae, I can reveal to you how the rest of the story ends. Ready? Here we go!

Jon opens a bakery and an inn at King's Landing, where the other characters all work or come and go.

"Where did the pie go? Hound? Oh, you...!"

Varys and Tyrion have to share a room upstairs, and where Varys is tidy Tyrion is messy and likes to play the lute real loud, so there are constant jokes. But every time Varys in his apron says something, Tyrion goes, "My DIHCK!" and the audience laughs.

Jaime keeps trying to win Sansa's hand, and she acts all proper and gets upset when she gets dirt on her dress. Arya is a cool dance teacher because it's just like fencing.

The Night Prince is a cheeky alley boy who is interested in Arya, but she ignores him. Baker Sam is a friendly figure who hands the gang of alley boys, The Others, apples and pies once in a while. His cheeks are always covered in flour and he is a real jolly old fellow.

Queen Cersey constantly tries to find ways to close down the inn but keeps failing in the most hilarious ways, and she always blames Littlefinger even though he tried to warn her. "Here we go again!" he sighs.

Occasionally Catelyn Stark drops by to check in on her kids, and they all show her what they have learned recently in the episode. Then she gives them some wise words, that usually have to do with fish and rivers.

Captain Seaworthy and Pirate Euron sit in a corner drinking ale and telling tall tales. When someone makes a fool of himself they shout some funny comment. Euron has a small crossbow hidden in his beard and shoots little arrows at chicken legs and pies to reel them in, and then Dany the Wench threatens to make the two pay their ale tab.

The baby dragon and Puppy Ghost like to rough and tumble, or just sleep curled up together, so adorable. The baby dragon gets to light the fireplace and heat soup with the flames coming out of his nostrils. At the end of the episode he often chases away Cersei, who is the only one who is afraid of him.
