Books vs Show: How much difference?

He resisted splitting the other books as well. They published them as one volume in hardback but they are now sold as two.

Which market are you in? In the States they are still generally sold as one volume.

And if it were to be split, I would personally rather the actual narrative be cut in two, rather than splitting POVs on the same timeline (like AFFC/ADWD.)

But as of today he is ". . .back home again now, and back once more in Westeros, working on WINDS… which, let me add once more, has NOT been finished and hidden away for years.  (sigh) " http://georgerrmartin.com/notablog/2019/05/19/more-stuff-more-nonsense/

So godspeed George, but please don't take another 8 years! Why don't you just publish whatever's ready first and figure out the rest, it's not like ADWD had a proper ending anyway, so we are fine if none of the plots have reached a kind of a conclusion in TWOW yet!

I feel the opposite way: I'd rather wait longer for Winds than have it come out (after so long a wait) feeling unfinished and incomplete the way Feast and Dance do.

I've thought for a while that George should consider re-releasing AFFC/ADWD as a "Part 1" and "Part 2," with the POVs from both stitched together to make a complete narrative and the material that was moved to Winter put back to give those storylines the climax they were supposed to have. Might be a good way to buy some time with the fan base if he still has a ways to go to finish the rest of TWOW...

I've got this horrible horrible feeling that  GRRM is taking in all the negative reaction to the show and thinking, "Shit, everyone hates my plotlines, so I'd better go back and rewrite my nearly completed drafts of both books". :bang:

My personal opinion --- martin gives no thought to what fan sites think.

Martin is busy.

Martin has his money.

If and that is a big if, martin completes his epic saga of ASOIAF I hope martin stays true to his tale.

St. Tyrion of the show is far removed from the book counterpart.  The latter would be delighted to see Dany burn Kings Landing.

No he wouldnt, why kinda dumb shit is this? Just because hes going thru the most fucked up hangover ever doesnt mean he'd wanna see thousands of innocent people burned alive.

This! I find it funny how many people complain of the quality of the writing in the TV Show, ignoring that AFFC is a terrible piece of literature and ADWD is only marginally better.

It is what it is, it ended how it ended. Not every show gets a Sopranos finale.

I'm guessing it will be the same ruler on the throne at the end of the books. What I'm not sure about is if I'll live long enough to find out :( I've just finished watching the final episode & unlike many posters on facebook, loved it.  I have read all the books George has so far written & feel the books hint more at this ending than the TV show did. Knowing the ending will not stop me buying the final book/s (is there 1 or 2 still to come?) as I look forward to reading all the details you can never get on a TV show.

Guessing I'm not the only one that has ended up forgetting which bits of the story I knew about came from the books or the TV show lol. Had a discussion with someone last night & was talking about something that happened with Sam & Gilly & was told that didn't happen.  Google informed me it did but in the books, not the Show.

You know, considering that it seems very likely that the Tyrion Targaryen thing is actually going to turn out to be that change/decision George told us years ago he made in TWoW I actually think that if there is a character who is going to jump the shark of madness it is going to be Tyrion. He threw it in the face of the Kingslanders and all the assembled lords that he wanted to see them dead. And he meant that. This was no joke or empty threat.

And if he ever gets a dragon he'll have the means to make good of his words, not to mention that he will also have a mad father to avenge.

But in any case, there is no chance that Tyrion is ever going to give much thought about the lives of innocents. Penny caused him to get back from suicide, but I doubt she is going to stick around until the end of the series.

I don't think Jaime will be the valonqar in the books, because I doubt George is going to have two main characters murder their "mad queen" lovers. (I do believe Jon will kill Daenerys in the books, however). I think it'll either be Tyrion (with the irony being that Cersei's mistreatment of him created a self-fulfilling prophecy), or that it'll be Arya. Since they wanted to have Arya kill the Night King instead, that could explain why they didn't have her murder Cersei as well.

I'm actually willing to bet that Jaime will outlive both Cersei and Brienne in the books. Cersei's arc has been combined with half a dozen others, and I'm guessing that Aegon will be on the throne with Dany attacks King's Landing in the books, so there might not be a reason to even keep Cersei around that long. Brienne's arc felt a lot like wish fulfillment this season--hooking up with Jaime, becoming LC despite being a woman--which leads me to believe that D&D made it up. Perhaps she is killed by Stoneheart.

I'm inclined to believe that the Starks all have a similar ending to the one on the show, with Rickon being the only real wildcard.

Judging by how heavily they were foreshadowing a Daenerys pregnancy last season, it wouldn't surprise me if she's pregnant when she dies in the books, and that the show changed that in order to make Jon more sympathetic. George does love his tragedies.

The North and Iron Islands being independent at the end of the series actually makes a lot of sense from a sociological perspective. Neither region ever assimilated with the rest of Westeros, and unlike Dorne, they don't share the Faith of the Seven either.

Right at the beginning, Tyrion wanted to reduce the Vale to a wasteland, in return for Lysa's treatment of him.

I think the shows will be more or less fundamental as to how the end will play out, yes.

It just translates a bit more difficult to TV...I've been running it over in my head and with some slight tweaking - I'm more or less happy with this as an outcome.

Ha ha, I don't agree with that at all, but I do like to consider all sides of an argument. I've just read 2 eviscerating takedowns of the show and books.  You  might enjoy them if you have the patience for articles that are as long as the books:

http://tigerbeatdown.com/2011/08/26/enter-ye-myne-mystic-world-of-gayng-raype-what-the-r-stands-for-in-george-r-r-martin/

I particularly enjoyed the critique of Jack Gleeson (Joffrey), marking him out as the most intelligent of the cast by far. That's in the first article which is a vicious attack on the likes of you and me. Don't go there if you have the balls of an Unsullied.

Its not a bad ending at all...it was just rushed at the end, which is the part you dont want to rush. You dont wanna rush any parts but especially not the points of the show you were spending all that time building towards.

Now having said that, I think the books will have many differences. Bronn aint getting a castle thats for sure. Not even sure Jon will be there by the end.

Excuses, excuses. How can a show not have a bad ending if it rushed it and threw it together...which you said shouldn't happen.

Bronn already has his castle in the books. As of the end of A Dance with Dragons, Bronn is the Lord of Stokeworth

I meant the ending for the characters wasn't bad. But yeah it rushed it and didnt develop the pathway to these endings in a fulfilling manner. Bronn isn't holding any castles by the end of the story. He's not nearly as important.
