Anthony Appleyard
A web site says that the forest of the known part of Sothoryos is "like the Amazon jungle on steroids". But "on steroids" is not a likely expression to appear on the GoT series books. What is the original source information about the nature of the north Sothoryos jungle? Euron III Greyjoy
I think it was something about the forest retaking the land. So the cities that where built to the North bank of Sothoryos are being overgrown by the forest, since no-one lives there.

IIRC, the ruins of the cities in Sothoryos are supposed to be haunted and overrun with terrifying creatures, and full of strange diseases. Not too far off from the medieval understanding of unknown lands, definitely.
McGuv19
I think there are also natives who live there too, there is a page about Sothoryos in A World of Ice and Fire

Thick jungle canopy and green as far as the eye can see. Humans aren't cutting down trees and clearing land.
Anthony Appleyard
A look through the references in Wikipedia's Game of Thrones pages and A Wiki of Fire and Ice and Game of Thrones Wiki show: (1) References to the story books. (2) References to direct statements by George R. R. Martin. An expression such as "like the Amazon jungle on steroids" would not occur in (1), but it might occur in (2). The report by the Valyrian woman after her 3-year dragonback exploration of Sothoryos reported "nothing but forest and mountains and desert", i.e. no Serengeti-like grass areas and no wide cultivation.
