Rant & Rave without Repercussion: Burn It All Edition

The main focus of the episode felt well accomplished. Yes we can argue about the build up, they really could've done a better job of leading Daenerys to this place. However I guess she is meant to be "mad". This always felt like her path. It is established pretty early on in the story that Daenerys wants to invade Westeros, so I am baffled as to why people are surprised she is now a villain.

My biggest issue has to be the massive inconsistencies in the writing. It is almost like each episode is written in a total vacuum. My major complaints are:

  • Episode 3 we see the Dothraki charge and get obliterated and the Unsullied overwhelmed by the dead, but now in the EP 6 preview she seems to have a formidable force of both.
  • Why establish the scorpions as some supreme dragon killing machine if by the next episode one of them can't even hit Drogon? She should've lost a dragon in the fight with the dead.
  • Euron... aw man, poor Euron Greyjoy. Why was he ever in the show? If D&D don't like the magical stuff why add the most magical man? Why were his last words his joy in seemingly killing Jaime and not "What is dead may never die"?
  • Varys caught a bad case of "Little Finger Syndrome". LFS being when a super intelligent character who has plotted and schemed for decades ends up getting killed for the dumbest reason. The writers literally can't think of a good way to outsmart these characters so they just get rid of them.
  • Even the action has its issues. Cleganebowl is undermined by an awful conclusion. When The Hound began to stab him whilst held up against the wall you'd think his first thought would be to stab him in the head. Afterall he thrust his sword through his torso and it did nothing. Rather he repeatedly stabs at his arms and torso before going for the eye?

You know, I'm just not really inspired to get up a good head of steam. Ep 3 took it out of me. I've got nothing left in me to care about this show. The poor execution of a powerful story has left me feeling hollowed out.

Thank god only one more left and then I can get back to waiting for the books.

Do Dumb and Dumber realize that Dragonstone is an island?  Why does the Iron fleet do nothing and just allow the Unsullied free passage back and forth?

So Jaime's hero moment is a teleport to the beach to fight Urine?  I would rather he died to actual urine than that chode be his last hero moment.

The first half of the episode is largely told from Tyrion's perspective. Where did he go????

Enough with the tracking reverse POV shots.  I am so sick of Miguel Sapochnik using them.  We all know that is just Michael Bay's pseudoname when he wants people to think he is exotic.

  • The ruination of Daenerys Targaryen is now also complete.
  •

It's not ruination, it's her arc and it's a great arc.

She wanted to love her people and she wanted the people to love her. But the people did not love her. They didn't wait to be saved by her, didn't appreciate her wanting to conquer King's Landing. All this babble from her childhood about Westeros waiting for a Targaryen ruler was idiotic nonsense of Viserys who brainwashed young Daenerys into believing this delusions.

Except in season 2 she explicitely said she doesn´t believe in it...

Can you please elaborate on this reference? Season, episode, scene? I would like to watch it.

No exect reference yet, but it is the scene in Qarth, where she is cyring:

Daenerys Targaryen:
The people in Westeros don't know I'm alive!

Ser Jorah Mormont:
They will soon enough.

Daenerys Targaryen:
And then what? They'll pray for my return? They'll wave dragon banners and shout my name? That's what my brother believed and he's a fool.

A cave in kills Cersei? Not a knife in the back like she deserves? Jamie sincerely runs back to her? I vouched for his change! The Lannisters went down together, the same way the rose up! What will Tyrion do now that he no longer has Cersei the run from and Jamie to save him?

Dany burns it all in a mad rage.

Jon sees her for what she is, recognizes his mistake.

Euron was funny. That whole fight between him and Jamie made me laugh. His satisfaction/ consolation as he died thinking he killed Jamie Lannister was giggle worthy.

Fucking hell.

Who the fuck did Arya tell she was going to kill Cersei? I don't even know if he was a Lannister or Targ man and the guy just stutters and tries to get his manager?

Northman. Hence overcome in the presence of her Ninjaness.

Anyone not Unsullied or Dothraki in Dany's land forces is a Northman it looks like. Oh I dunno, maybe some of Sandra's Valemen who were permanently stationed in WF since the BoB. Everyone else in Westeros who hates Carol called in sick. Tullys, Blackwoods, Mallisters, Velaryons, Celtigars, Masseys.

So given the ease of Dany's victory (it seems obvious that Rhaegal was sacrificed last week in a way that made zero sense to give the illusion that Cersei had a chance, when in reality she never did), and lack of any civilian casualties until she incomprehensibly decided to go apeshit, can someone explain to me why she shouldn't have taken King's Landing a season and a half ago, when she still had three dragons and the Night King was still trying to figure out how to get through the Wall?

And she had much more men.

Yep, I'm going to agree with this point, and I think it hits it right on the head.  Daenerys has been headed in this direction all along, and last night was the ultimate conclusion of her fixation with being a beloved ruler.  NOW -- the pacing and execution of the last couple seasons are indeed worthy of all the derision one wants to heap upon them.  Daenerys' "breakdown" should have had a lot more buildup.  But I think it's hard to find fault with the arc itself.

Maybe it will make you feel better in the final episode when Cersei emerges from the rubble for a final face-off with Tyrion.  Because I've got a crisp $20 that says that's exactly what's going to happen.

Agreed. A bit rushed, but the arc itself is great and believable.

Has anybody watched the inside the episode explanation for Dany’s behavior? At one point she seems to have a plan to kill a few so the remaining will live better but in the end she just kills them all, allies and foes, with for no reason. I guess the fact that I need an explanation means something but maybe I just a bit dumber.

I kind of hope Cersei is alive. It could be they have Jaime parallel The Mountain and he somehow kept her safe from tons of falling debris.

IMHO this is not how art should work.  When somebody tells a story they have to lay the foundation FIRST so that there is no need for an explanation SECOND.  This is why the show is bad -- because good fans like you have to go to the altar of D&D and BEG them for an explanation for their inane babbling.  Other fans will parse through interviews and read quotes and watch "behind the scenes" footage to try to glean some knowledge of what they just watched.

And that's how far we have fallen; we no longer rely on the story to tell us what's going on; we need the story-tellers to explain to us "Yeah, what the fuck did I just watch?"  That's putrid story-telling.  When the movie ends, the director does not walk up to the front of the theater and say, "See, the reason X did this was because of the relationship she had with ... and hopefully that will make sense of this..."

That's not how you tell a story; that's how you excuse mistakes.
