Rant & Rave without Repercussion: Burn It All Edition

Dany's entire story leads to this. She's the last surviving member of an insane, inbred house known for burning people alive. Her "children" are weapons of mass destruction. Her character arc is actually a skillful bit of misdirection, making you think she can be the breaker of chains, etc. She was born to kill, baby.

That's nonsense. Everybody knows that Cersei doesn't care about people. I mean....Daenerys knows about the Sept right?

No. The blowing up of the Great Sept and the execution of most of the nobility in KL and most of the Faith is the best kep secret evah! Only Hot Pie knows about it.

Oh man, now you reminded me of the endless and nauseating torture porn Ramsay inflicted on Theon... it just went on and on and on... that was so, so bad. When was that, s3?

As to the Sansa Poole switcheroo, wasn’t there an argument made that viewers wouldn’t care if it was a “nobody” being tortured and raped, and that if it’s Sansa it’s so much more poignant? Although I don’t remember who said that. Cogman, maybe? :ack:

I fucking hate this show and all it’s done to virtually ALL the characters.

I mean, gotdam, if they really wanted to, they could have made Sansa turn into Alys Karstark.

Why was she being locked in a rape tower? Littlefinger told her to wrap Ramsay around her finger but then she doesn't even try to manipulate and cajole him.

The whole thing is just blegh. And yes, the constant torture of Theon happened in season 3. Those scenes (especially the ones in the second half of the season) were tough to watch.

Er, no, with the possible exception of Arya, because she's a warg. Daenerys is not a warg and the rest of them don't really believe they're any of those things.

For someone who claims to be reading the books, you aren't paying attention.

Daenerys has magical powers. She is developing a warg-like connection with Drogon and she has these dreams (they call them dragon dreams) that look like the precognitive green dreams Jojen and Bran have. Except Dany's dreams revolve around dragons, fire, blood, sex and transformation instead of trees...and they are 3x more vivid than Jojen and Bran's dreams.

True. But the show did a poor job of showing this, you can't have everything she has done for 7 years be treated as a badass moment of ruthless victory of the hero and then spiral her into madness in a handful of scenes at the end.  Her downward spiral needed to begin last year and go for a full 10 episode season to feel authentic.

There was green fire too, wasn’t there? Does it mean anything? Course it doesn’t. I guess it looked cool in the video game that the show is now. Although there are many video games w/ much better developed characters and plots.

Being born to kill actually doesn't make her evil, insane or sick. Being born to kill still makes her the breaker of chains.

What did she say back in season 3? Some people come to love their chains, others don't even know that the chains are there.

Dany is not only going to raze King's Landing but a bunch of other cities and castles. But there will be an overall mystical purpose for it that will tie into the endgame of the series and solving the central mystery of the song of ice and fire.

The Targaryens were not all insane. Maegor the Cruel was cruel and heartless but no one called him insane or "mad." Aegon the Conqueror has done pretty much what Dany has done and everyone considers him and his sisters to be among the best Targaryen rulers. Daeron the Young Dragon submitted Dorne (yes, he lost it almost as soon as he created it) and thousands died.

Counterpoint: She was always on the downward spiral, but TV fans were too caught up in rooting for her. It was empowering when she was murdering people who deserved it, now it's just madness! Nevermind that she was always conquering, always killing to gain one throne or another, and her most loyal followers were either mercenaries trained from childhood to kill, or savage Mongols who take everything by force.

BTW, had Bron gone to hang out at High Garden ahead of the endgame?  At this point he's proven himself to be only smart character among the horde of idjiots.

Well, he wanted to decorate and change the curtains before moving in, so.

Yeah, I mean what season was it when she threatened to burn Hizdahr Zo Loraq alive, cause she thought he was part of the SotH? When he was totally innocent.

Both TV and book fans have always been too caught up in rooting for her, and I am glad to find out that GRRM is ending her story as a cautionary tale about the quest for power, if he ever finishes writing it, that will be a truly tragic story.

However, the show should and must have known that such an abrupt turn would outrage huge portions of their audience, so for that reason alone, they should have done a better job of foreshadowing at least her potential to break bad.

Maybe it was Bron to whom Varys was writing, giving advice, as Varys's taste is clearly much superior?  (I still have no idea to whom Varys was writing as betrayer that Daenerys mind read to know he'd betrayed her -- the Iron Bank, telling them their investment in Cersei had just gone bad, uncollectable, debt?)

Well the new Prince of Dorne ought to know about things like that.

Varys was writing to the same person Talysa was writing way back when. You know, those super important missives that were going to become super duper relevant.

That's ANOTHER problem with this episode.

It was super repetitive. If Daenerys has flown into a rage because of the bells, why wouldn't she destroy the belltower first? That's the most likely thing for any person who is flying off the handle....their trigger is number one on the priority list and then everything else comes after.

Also, why would she be burning the same streets multiple times for hours....while not even making a direct hit on the Red Keep?!

It makes no sense.

Because she had to be portrayed as crazy as possible?
