karaddin Posted October 23, 2019 Share Posted October 23, 2019 I think the thing that gets under my skin the most is the people who legitimately didn't enjoy TLJ act like we're being ridiculous and trying to unfairly taint everyone that doesn't like it when we spear of/get sick of those who just hated it because they're bigots. Yes - it just didn't work for some people, and that's OK but it doesn't in any way subtract from the fucking army of trolls over to the side with a megaphone brigading everything even remotely positive about it. So just let me rant about them - chances are if you give a fuck about my opinion of you, you're not remotely in the group I'm ranting about. As to the trailer - I think the most gorgeous shot is the island of ice reflected in perfectly still water. I can understand, especially for those that have been disappointed by the new trilogy, if you weren't emotionally moved by this trailer. I rolled my eyes at the start of it seeming to be on the forest moon of Endor, or that style environment. But if the OT held any kind of place in your heart I can't imagine how you could not have at least a twinge at Luke's "The Force will be with you." at the end. Is it a reflection? The ice below, even distorted, still looks way different from the ice above. I've seen a theory that the structure in the ice is really a super star destroyer. I saw it as a reflection first, too, being in awe of the shot. I paused at several frames later, and thought that didn't look like a reflection. I honestly didn’t like Star Wars much as a kid, I think the scene in Yodas hut in ESB freaked me out a bit when I was 5 or 6. When I really started to enjoy it was when I went to see Revenge of the Sith on opening night with my dad when I was 17 and loved it, I went home and watched all of the films with him over the weekend. I’m so looking forward to being able to watch the films with my daughter from when she is much younger than I was, of course I will educate her to have the correct viewpoint of the plot, the Jedi are evil, the Rebellion are terrorists and pests and she can have any toy lightsaber she wants as long as it’s red . You know what really gets me now isn't even the racism and sexism anymore, its the stupidity. Like, this one guy, I don't know if I mentioned it here or not, is convinced the pre sales are fake news(his words, yes he's one of them) because one theater near him isn't sold out yet. He also has been trying to convince people on this other site that Michelle Obama is a man because he saw a badly Photoshoped photo on google and that Captain Marvel bombed cause some posted a video of an allegedly empty theater on youtube. I did this as a kid too, despite (i think anyway) the generational differences between you and i. Can’t and won’t defend the quality of the prequels but they kept Star Wars relevant to my generation. I've been able to pretend that the prequel trilogy never happened and isn't canon, and the sequel trilogy seems to feel the same way, considering how little it has referenced the prequels. In my mind, these sequels are like some sort of corporate fan fiction, just very well made fan fiction that managed to get the original actors involved. If they didn't retcon the prequels there's no way they'll ditch this trilogy short of a total reboot which I'd guess is decades off. But I agree with you about the lack of world building and terrible setting. They really should have done a clone wars/cgi show to fill in the blanks of what Luke Leia and Han were up to between Jedi and The Force Awakens. Instead we got "bad things happened and everyone basically went back to where they were when Star Wars started. Except Luke. I have no problem with where he ended up but I wish they'd made it clear that he did train some other Jedi before Kylo killed his last class. Vaughn Posted October 24, 2019 Share Posted October 24, 2019 To each their own but my basic problem with the complaint about how the new movies don't properly tie into the old ones, etc... is that the so much of original movie, A New Hope, was rendered essentially into nonsense by the prequel trilogy, all in the name of world building. The slavish need for everything to tie together negates creativity unless you actually have a pretty solid, carefully plotted plan like Marvel did with the MCU which SW, being told over three different wildly separate projects, did not. I enjoy the new movies but will be delighted to see other stories told in this universe without having to placate fans who want to see a throwback reference to Sebulba or some other character all in the name of being valued as 'original fans' or some pathetic concept. With this trilogy I am not embarrassed to watch it. I went to see the Phantom Menace with my wife, who is somewhat of a Star Wars fan, and when we left I felt like I needed to apologize to her for taking her there. It was utter shit and aimed at 8 year old children. With the current films I feel much better, are they perfect, of course not, and the original trilogy wasn't either.
