That's my feel for it myself. I actually don't have any problem with that story arc per-se, on the contrary it's that wonderfully tragic story that GRRM has woven time and again into the books. What really is out of place is the sudden transformation, it looks like the whole season was rushed through to fit in 6 episodes, when having 8-10 episodes as with previous seasons would have allowed more character development to fill the gaps, while still leaving it as enough of a sudden transformation to be a shocking surprise when she burns KL. Gianna Dorenberg
Sorry if this is old news but I was browsing the news and read that GRRM actually is defending D&D. Really disappointed in GRRM as well if that's true.
Ser Lepus
About Bran and Sansa: Yes, they look like jerks, throwing Jon under a bus in order to get their thrones... Jon should be able to return anytime, nobody would care what the Unsullied or the Dothraki want... As I said, Jon should have killed by the Unsullied and Dothraki, or he should have been enthroned... having him survive but to be exiled is stupid.. Really disappointed in GRRM as well if that's true. I don't think George is the kind of guy who viciously bashes stuff, especially stuff made by people he knows. I've often seen him praising pulpy, average quality stuff on his blog. He's like one of those kindly teachers who gives everyone a passing grade, and if he criticizes something, he's going to do it in a veiled, inoffensive way (unless it's people selling false stories about him on the internet). I think part of that is because he's very self-conscious as a creator (he has to be to struggle so much with ASoIaF), and part because he used to be a screen writer himself in the 80s and early 90s, so his expectations were always, at least in part, based on experiences from a time when even the best TV shows were mostly cheap schlock. As bad as it is right now, Game of Thrones still exceeds those standards in many many ways. We have a different perspective, because we've been watching good serialized dramas for most of our adult lives, and we are also shell shocked and jaded because of bad endings from popular series like Lost, Dexter, BSG, etc. Personally, I really really hope George is not as depressed about the series as we are. He needs to keep himself healthy and sound of mind to keep writing. We're just going to have to be assholes for him and bash D&D ourselves! I almost forgot about that, OMG!! You scratch the surface of annoyance and absurdity. -The sequence was interminable. Though I suppose it doesn't matter too much considering how many threads the episode left dangling. -There was none of the production value we've come to expect. Just some rocks and dust tossed over the set. Which was looking very set-like. -Tyrion makes it through the archway that doomed our couple last episode, so there was no reason Jaime shouldn't have tried to get out. Cersei at least must be narrower than Tyrion. -While it appeared the whole Red Keep caved in last episode, we now know the love twins could have saved themselves by sidestepping the bricks with a few paces. They were both crushed to death from above by a collapsing roof, but a dwarf can locate and uncover their corpses by rearranging a couple bricks. Yep. I could have been great, if they had bothered to tell the story, rather than going "SURPRISE! LOL! YOU DIDN'T EXPECT THIS, DIDN'T YOU!" Dany the Mad Queen could have been a wonderful tragic arc that made us bawling like babies, just like Ned's execution or the Red Wedding. All the great tragedies have you sympathising with the villain protagonist, even as you recognise that they have to die, or that if they win, their victory will be completely hollow. And while it's not a tragedy as such, I can remember tearing up inside as I saw Ian McKellen playing Richard III, at the Globe Theatre, and just before the battle of Bosworth he's lamenting the fact that no one will mourn for him - but then says "And, wherefore should they?" as he runs through the crimes that have brought him to this point. At the end, he is at least prepared honestly to acknowledge all the evil he has done to get to where he is. Macbeth still has his courage at the end, and Othello his honour. Michael Corleone ends Godfather II winning all he wanted and losing his soul in the process. Daenerys's end in this series is more like a Jacobean splatterfest, - such as 'Tis Pity She's a Whore" where characters just slaughter each other for the evulz. Furthermore convicted of murdering Joffrey, but I guess he gets a pass for that, or he convinced everyone of his innocence somehow. Master of ships: Davos Seaworth A lowborn smuggler, and previous Hand to, and most loyal supporter of, Stannis, who famously tortured his own daughter to death to gain the favour of a foreign fire-demon. Master of coin: Bronn A lowborn cut-throat with no experience in finance. Grand Maester: Samwell Tarly Became somehow the most senior member of the Citadel overnight, despite having fathered Children and stealing property Lord commander of the Kingsguard: Brienne The first woman on the job, but I guess all of Westeros acquired modern values overnight? Veteran of one battle, wherein she didn't make a single tactical decision. Yupp, I can totally see how the Westorosi nobility can get behind this! I really don't understand how a showpologist can even call this a happy ending. This is the most cronyism-afflicted small council in fucking history, and no-one in Westeros seems to care.
