[Spoilers] Episode 806 Discussion

Have not posted here in years. Old fan of the books. I always thought that there was a reasonable chance that the Night's Watch custom of electing the Lord Commander would be applied to the Throne and that Bran would prove to be very important (he was the 1st POV character).

I suspect the order of events will play out differently. For example, Jon will kill Dany to make the magic sword earlier in the story, before the final battle with the Others.

So parts of that ending felt right to me but the setup by D&D was generally poor.

If this is how the books end then I'll be happy. This season has felt very fast-paced but the ending was satisfying for me. It changed my idea of what the story was about. Now that it's over - and assuming it will end this way in the books as well - I think GRRM has written ASOIAF as the final chapter in the history of the Targaryen dynasty. The house that was fated to produce the saviors of humanity but would always be too unstable and unpredictable to build a peaceful regime. When read along with GRRMs short stories and histories of Westeros, the whole saga of the rise, fall, rebirth, and ultimate end of the house of Targaryen is a tragic fantasy epic. You can see why he has put so much effort into these ancillary works like Fire and Blood since they tell an essential part of the story of ASOIAF, they aren't just fun background reading.

The best thing about the ending is that it is true to the nature of the books. There is a sense of possibility for the future but also a real sense that Westeros is still on a knife-edge, things could go wrong very quickly. Could the north remain an independent kingdom? Could it restrain any temptation to expand its territory? We've seen siblings go to war throughout the history of Westeros. Couldn't each of the remaining kingdoms decide that independence was an attractive option? What about the "rightful" king in exile? Varys wrote letters to others informing them of Aegon's existence, it wouldn't take much for some of them to try and plot a restoration at some point. There was some level of happiness in the ending but the seeds for it to all go wrong were planted, though we'll never find out how this turns out.

I wonder if they changed the ending when they realized in season 7 that there was no chemistry between Dany and Jon . They then gave a “romantic” ending to Jaime and Cersei (who, right or wrong, have good chemistry together) and the killing of the mad queen to Jon and Dany.

The Vale lords seem to me the biggest isolationists in the story. And for good reason.

For this reason it would have made all the sense in the world for the Vale to also opt for independence after Sansa declared hers.

No. They originally wanted to join in with the Northeners, but Lysa kept them out of it. Robb goes and plays himself and Stannis gets outmaneuvered. Suddenly Lysa looks less batshit crazy and more clever.

Then everything else keeps happening, and the Valelords are uninvolved and remain intact. All that crap, and the leadership remained aloof and refused to engage. Suddenly it looks less like cowardice and more like wisdom. Especially since nobody with a strong enough navy cares to be their enemy.

So thats what I mean. Its like being the only kid who avoided drugs and alcohol in a class, and then a few years later being the only one not a total wreck.

  Peter Dinklage deserves another Emmy.

I think there needed to be one more 'haha you don't have a dick' joke in his episode for him to win. He was imprisoned by Grey Worm. How could he resist the opportunity to show such wit? It was such beautiful writing to have a eunuch joke be the first line of the season.

I missed that. So with the Others gone, the planet gets regular old winters like any dull old dirtball?

Damn the Children of the Forest messed up in more ways than one.

The defeat of the Others was supposed to end winter. I guess the showrunners skipped that chapter.

Her closure seemed the most directionless of all the main characters. Her clichéd "hero strikes off alone to go see the world" ending felt like such an afterthought, like they had no idea what to really do with her.

Really? Arya 'riding off into the sunset' (not the sunset sea, I'm thinking more Old Western)  is always how I envisioned her. She has some ties to the north, but much of her identity has been shattered and she seems like a wandering character who will never be settled or satisfied.

Everyone keeps saying the NW doesn't exist but those two crows that escorted Jon seemed pretty official.

They were really nicely dressed compared to say, Yoren in the first book/series. Apparently they got official funding. It seems now that the Night's Watch would be entirely the North's problem as they're an independent kingdom.

The new rule for rulers is "it's all by accident" all you have to do is survive the stupidity and you have a shot at the crown. Three dragons is not a shoe in. They just get you more accidents. Better to just fly under the radar and help out occasionally while appearing not to really want to be a royal if you can stand the abuse while the contenders whack each other out of rule. Never stand to close to your big hole in the floor either if you have a castle in the clouds... just saying.

I mean, that worked really well for Emperor Claudius. He was a lame stutterer so no one took him seriously, and while his family died like flies, no one bothered to execute him. Recommend the 12 Caesars by Suetonius, it's actually a really fun read, more like a gossip rag than a historical account. Also I, Claudius, the novel based on it.
