Best and worst TV series finales, and where does GoT rank? *Spoilers*

How many times did she say in seasons 7 & 8 that the north would never bend the knee again? How much set up do you need?

Do you think the seceding state is the only one that needs to agree to a secession? Also they just put, if Jon's denouncement of his claim is accepted, the legitimate male heir to House Stark on the Throne. The North likes Sansa but given what we know of their rules and attitudes they really should have shown at least the Northern Lords accepting that Sansa would be their Queen.

It was the finale, the conclusion. You don't introduce new drama during a conclusion.

My entire point is that it shouldn't have been the finale. There's at least a whole episode's worth of stuff you could have fit in just in the cut between the throne and the council. But in any case it's not new drama, it's a natural continuation of drama that already happened.
But realistically the final two episodes could have been the finale and then a whole next series. I like Jeffrey Jahns sketch outline of a season where the finale here is Dany burning everything to shit and then the next season would have been the tension playing out where John stays by her side and tries to reign her in while she demands that Sansa bends the knee and when Sansa refuses Dany moves on her and that's when John steps in. That also gives you the time to show Bran actually showing his worth to the people who are going to pick him and not just accepting it from a man standing before them in chains who fled the city accused of killing the previous king and returned in the company of the madwoman who burned the city down.

Oh, boy... As good as the cast of GoT was, what the cast of The Americans delivered, as nuanced and as difficult to notice for some remains some of the best acting on TV in this decade.

I give up... I tried to understand it and my English is simply not good enough. But I do believe that not everything is "good". We can say "Game of Thrones finale is excellent" but is it true because someone says it is? Or are there some universal aesthetic principles on which we can base at least some sort of objective criticism? I believe that sometimes we can say something is objectively bad because of the latter.

Like they showed us how Sansa is smart? Or how Dany has been descending into madness? Or how intelligent Tyrion is?

They have been telling us a lot in Season 8. Showing, not so much.

Then there is that small question of what happens when Bran dies. Because he is just a human and he will eventually die, and all the stories and all the wisdom of the world will die. Night King won, sooner or later, Bran will die.

And that is why it didn't make any sense.

1. Oh, I absolutely agree that the acting in The Americans was phenomenal and I was very happy when Matthew Rhys won his Emmy. I also believe that the acting in GOT is phenomenal, though I prefer the characters in the latter.

2. Quality is subjective. Always has been. Whether or not you believe a show to be high quality is completely up to you.

3. They showed us that Sansa was a highly competent Lady of Winterfell. I don’t think Danerys went mad. She fell victim to her own ego and became a delusional tyrant, the very thing she’s been fighting against. It was very poetic. She’s always had dark impulses in the past and her first instinct has always been to set things on fire, only her loyal advisers reigned her in. She ran out of loyal advisers. I understand why people think Tyrion has been incompetent, but I looked at it differently. Tyrion was losing the short game, it is true, but he was playing the long game. Tyrion was trying to end the war with the least amount of blood, so episode 5 wouldn’t happen. He wanted Danerys to be able to rule with love, rather than fear. Unfortunately, he failed, but I place the blame more on Danerys and Cersei.

4.  When Bran dies, the Lord Paramounts of the 6 Kingdoms will get together to choose a new king. That’s what Tyrion said.

And who gets to choose a new Three-Eyed Raven? :D

You see, that's the thing with GoT. You need two questions and everything falls like a house of cards.

Yes, it was.

That assumes that a three eyed raven is still necessary for Westeros. I have wondered about that myself. In the books, they call the 3ER the Last Greenseer.

Does anyone know if the books say how and when the 3ER originated? I'm thinking he had to be a product of the CotF's magic. The wiki doesn't say.

For those of you who are fans of "The Americans", did you find it slow at first? I tried to watch it 2 or 3 years ago and couldn't get into it.  I'm wondering if I just didn't give it enough time. I'm kind of impatient that way.

I like the fact that Bran didn't let anyone know that the Three-Eyed Raven can live for at least 200 years and probably a lot longer.

Honestly the small council scene would have worked better as part of the montage. That scene was awful.

So so bad. Bronn arguing with Davos about funds. Bronn joking about brothels. Bronn having that much power in general. :ack:

Yes. I watched part of the first season when it originally came on and it didn’t really grab me. I ended up dropping it, but constantly saw it getting praise both here and elsewhere year after year. I finally decided to binge it and I ended up loving it. Rhys and Russell are both outstanding throughout.

Undoubtedly, it is a slow burner. But, the emotions are so intense all the time that once you are sucked into that world of theirs, you are constantly frightened what may come next. Those two performances made the silly, outlandish, absurd premise work like a charm.

But, every now and then, the show gets into a gear and you are left breathless. It may be slow, but it is never boring.

So, are we still to assume that Bran will be able to live that long without being connected to weirwood?  I mean would Bloodraven die had he not gone to the cave?

Well, in the show it's not Bloodraven.  It's a nameless guy who specifically states he's lived for thousands of years.  So that's what I was going off of at least.  Rivers is only, what, 120 or something?  And yuck.  So yeah, in the books I don't think Bran could live too long without the weirnet.

Yeah, the How I Met Your Mother finale is probably the worst finale ever.

Whole last season or two was awful IMO.  Slogged through it because it was so fun earlier.  Sounding like The Big Bang Theory's path...

It’s not nonsense, it’s the truth. I much prefer the GOT finale to The Americans. In fact, the last montage of all the Starks was more emotional than the entire series of The Americans.

It's great you love the GoT finale but that doesn't mean that it was a good one. I'm sure that every single one of us here can provide an example of something or someone we love but are aware that it's not really as good as we think.

Popularity is not proof of quality. If it were, Kardashians would be knee deep in Emmys.

Isn't it odd how Kim's porn tape wasn't any good and it launched them into billionaire status?   I can't get over that and it's been like 20 years.  You'd think a social climber would be better at climbing on someone socially.  meanwhile people are busting their butts (literally in some cases) to make really good porn and they get maybe $80k.  Has the church of Kanye dealt with this in one of his sermons?   Being on the Kim K trajectory would be trippy.  Imagine if one of my halfassed posts about Littlefinger's toungue action led to me being named postmaster general.

Anyway, full disclosure, I haven't actually seen the GoT finale.

1. Which was totally unbelievable. Like I said, Jon’s friends and family were the judges. And it wasn’t exile. He was supposed to re-join the NW. Instead he took off with the Wildlings first chance he got. And with Grey Worm just fucking off to Naath there would be nothing stopping Jon from returning to WF or anywhere else he wanted. The entire thing was a joke. Would have worked better if Jon had self imposed his own punishment. Not to mention Tyrion got off absolutely scott-free. Another thing Grey Worm just happened to be alright with for reasons.

2. Except for you know...being independent for their entire existence even after Aegon conquering the rest of the kingdoms. They finally only joined the realm through marriage. If anyone deserves their independence it’s them. Why the hell should they be ruled by some kid from the North? Dumb.

3. No. They tried to make the great council vote funny with cringy shit like Sansa rudely telling Edmure to sit down (which was ridiculous he would make more sense as king than Bran), and everyone laughing at Sam when he suggested letting the people decide (guess Yara forgot about Kingsmoots).

Surely Isaac Hempstead Wright and Emilia Clarke both summed up their ends this Season.

"I thought it was a joke" and "It came out of f*cking nowhere."

Tyrion didn't give a piece of good advice to Daenerys.  Had she followed her original instincts in Season 7, and blitzed the Red Keep, the war against Cersei would have been over in 30 minutes, at a fraction of the final casualty total.  And, that's really when the series began to go off the rails, IMHO.  Daenerys and her commanders started doing things that made no military sense, just so that Cersei could remain in the game.  Varys who promised fire and blood to Lady Tyrell at the end of Season 6 became virtually a pacifist in the final seasons, for reasons.

Quality is subjective, so of course my love for the finale isn’t proof that it’s good. It’s just my opinion. As for your second point, why would you love something you thought was terrible? That makes no sense.

Lots of people love things they think are rubbish, that's why the phrase 'guilty pleasure' exists. No-one said it makes sense.
