Gendry?!

Recommended Posts

If you believe Dany to be the rightful queen then being a Baratheon decended from the usurper doesn’t give you any claim to the throne.

If you believe the Baratheon claim to be superior and don’t support Dany as queen then was Gendry ever legitimised?

Either way it doesn’t matter. Power resides where men believe it to.

So remind me again why Dany dying is causing a succession crisis when she legitimized Gendry as a Baratheon? He is now Robert’s heir and has a legitimate claim to the throne. Why wasn’t this addressed?

That is easy.

Daenerys is Targaryen and she can only make Gendry a legitimized Baratheon if she is accepted as queen -- and she is queen because she follows her father, not because she follows Robert Baratheon.

Robert just usurped the throne and his line was never legitimized from Daenerys point of view.

So if we accept that Daenerys re-conquered her birthright Iron Throne as daughter of her father, then Baratheons do not matter at all anymore.

That's it. Very straight-forward.

Jon Snow is no the legitimate heir of the Iron Throne, but obviously the Unsullied would not accept him, because he killed Daenerys and they have the largest army at hand. So they find a better compromise.

Actually the Baratheons do matter in this case. because Gendry except for Jon is the only one left known with Targ blood, Robert's Targaryen blood is what got him the best cliam to the IT after the Rebellion. ( as ironic as it may be)

Small traces of far-fetched Targaryen blood are not a matter here. They have never been discussed in the show.

Anyway, as always with thrones: power resides where they believe it resides.

The Targaryens concquered the Seven Kingdoms hundreds of years ago. Robert usurped the throne by battle. Daenerys re-conquered it again by battle. And now they simply elect a new King and Gendry say yes to it.

That's it.

It's not just small traces of blood though, Robert was 1/4 Targaryen. His grandmother was Rhaelle Targaryen, daughter to King Aegon V. And yes, blood does not matter in conquest, but the Lords prefer to have some kind of excuse for siding with the ursurper, as they had during Roberts Rebellion.

Gendry's blood doesn't matter because they've broken the wheel, the King is going to be elected from now on.

Because giving it to Gendry would make too much sense and we wouldn't get the St. Tyrion speech about how amazing Bran is due to his "story".

No, not far-fetched, Martin world works the same as our own in terms of claims and right of succession. Gendry is a great grandson of Aegon V. From what is left, he is the only person with claim to the throne. Targaryens forged the kingdom so they didn't need a claim to something what didn't exist before. Robert usurped the throne but took it because he had a claim to prove his legitimacy. Daenerys laid claim to her father's throne as rightful successor of deposed dynasty.

Bran was elected and it seems that Westeros changed to elective succession not based on claims, like in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Will it be the same in the books I don't know but maybe Great Councils are forshadowing that, who knows.

With Jon going to the Watch, Gendry is only successor to Daenerys based on family relation, he is a descendant of Aegon V, her closest living relative in the show.

This is true but the show has finally exposed itself for the poorly written Peter Dinklage Wank-Fest that it is. Nothing is Nothing.

Because succession is the real reason of all the wars. The whole Game of Thrones was about succession. They are done with wars, and because they dont want to have another civil war over who sits on the throne. They decide to create a form of democracy. So a legitimate claim doens’t really matter anymore. Jon would have the best claim tho, buy Tyrion knew Jon wouldnt want to rule, that’s why he convinced Jon that he had to kill Dany. Tyrion knew Jon would be punished. So he had the plan for a democracy all along.

Dany made Gendry a legitimate Baratheon, which makes him a legitimate heir to Storm's End. She did not, however, recognize Robert's usurpation of the Iron Throne as legitimate. Nor did the council that decided Dany's successor seem interested in restoring the Baratheons as rulers of Westeros.

It's not democracy it's an elective monarchy and going by our own history it isn't going to end well. Most elective monarchies ended up electing people from the same family and eventually introduced hereditary succession after a while. So Westeros most likely goes back to how it was in a few hundred years.
