I don't see it as an either or. There's plenty of reason for him to explore to the north--perhaps even the Land of Always Winter--as a member of the Night's Watch.

Yup he can be with the free folk and Night's Watch. They always seem to have freedom to travel. He just cant have babies that's only for Sam. Benjen was in the first episode.

There is no purpose to the Night's Watch any longer in the first place.  It serves as a place for those exiled from society - Jon just took it a step further.  He "never" had a real place in the North other than as Ned Stark's bastard and Sansa was power hungry enough that if she felt any threat from the Night's Watch she would have went to war with them.  Sansa is Daenerys without a dragon and with a desire to rule the North rather than the seven kingdoms.  The former "King in the North" would have surely been a threat to that  Recall her saying to Brann she loved her brother but those in the north were not ready to kneel?  What was her final scene?  Sansa is one of the few characters who got what they wanted in the end though her dreams had changed since the beginning.  He was exiled to the Night's Watch, watched those who demanded his exile leaving and accepted exile rather taking his vows again.  Besides what was the Night's Watch protecting against?

Lol no,

Sansa is power hungry, but she never betrayed Jon nor she would murder innocent people. She even wanted Jon as their king at the end, but Unsullied and Yara didn't let them.

She also explained her reasons very well on why they want a seperate kingdom, that's what the north wants, she couldn't control the North otherwise.

Sansa didn't get Jon as king but she got 95% of what she want. She wanted him free and in the north and a Stark family member ruling. She is ruling, Bran is ruling and Jon is not dead. She won. She is the big winner of the game of thrones.

The question is, if he was never sent to the wall and Bran actually forgave him. What would Jon have done then? He made it clear he never wanted the throne. He would have probably still went back to the " real north" with his wildling friends. He spent a good part of his life there.

That's also what North wants, not only Sansa's.

He would be a retired king and war hero. And Sansa could have given him a lordship in the North. Maybe Bear Island or Last Hearth or Karhold. Are he could have been the new lord of dragonstone.

If the Nights Watch still existed, then how could he leave and permanently join the wildlings? That’s desertion and is punishable by death. That would also technically make Sam a deserter too.

Sam can easily get a royal decree to leave the Night's Watch that if that's your only problem. :D

The one thing the Night's Watch has left to watch now is the wildlings, who could still go by boat to raid south of the Wall like they have done through the centuries. Keeping good relations with them should be step one, if it can be done. It just so happens that Jon is good friends with the wildlings' leader, or the closest thing they have to a leader. Obviously he would go with them to see where they set up camp, and to go hunting with them a little, help build a hut, that sort of thing, before going back to the Watch. Like soldiers do to win the hearts and minds of the locals.

Then he goes back to the Night's Watch to do his duty there. Not that there is much need for a Night's Watch really, raiders or not, but still. He can go back and forth. This would be a good solution for all the Night's Watchmen; spend some time with the wildlings now and then, now that you finally have better relations with them than ever.

Grey worm and his ~4,000 unsullied foreigners in a city with severe damage to its defenses and zero supplies can dictate terms to an entire continent. Makes sense right?

Just like Dany can force Gendry to be lord of Storm's end and warden of the storm lands. Or bronn as lord of highgarden LUL

With the Redwyne fleet might as well make him Master of Ships as well. Throw in Oldtown and why not Grand Maester?

What is this butterfly thing?

Butterfly fever. It's a disease spread by the island's butterflies. The natives are immune to it, but it kills everyone else. They can lessen their chances of contracting it by spending no more than a few hours on the island, and to go at night.
