Was the Red Wedding inevitable?

It was one of the plot points Martin was aiming for, so no. In fact other events and characters were shaped to lead to it.

In story, the Blackwater turns the tides of the war making Robb unlikely to win and the fall of Winterfell make the Freys and particularly the Boltons safe from retaliation allowing the Red Wedding.

These two conditions prompted and allowed it, but what motivated the Freys to go that far was Robb marrying Jeyne.

It is all of those things together. It is not supposed to be a normal event in-story. It is over the top in terms of brutality and treachery and it is not like they get points for it.
