Who got the most screwed over

I'm not sure why they wanted to portray her as victim.

They didn't. She just failed and died, small and vulnerable. Utterly defeated. Only her twin brother with her. I liked the end.

Cersei was supposed to be the super villain of the series. Even trumping the NK. All she did was stand in a tower. Where was the conniving woman who blew up a sept to avoid being convicted? How did she not have a plan to escape?

I cannot rejoice at any person dying scared, but I cannot feel sorry for her either. I expected more from her, for her to give more of a fight based on her prior antics. It was extremely anticlimactic for me.

I agree that there should have been some more. Some escape plan (even if it ended the same way), some more trumps in hand.

Yes, because Cersei wasn't the main villain.

Daenerys destroyed the city.

Basically what @Apoplexy is saying is that the final human villain (not anti-villain, not the anti-hero antagonist, the villain) of the series should have been someone powerful that gives the protagonists a very hard time after letting them deplete themselves saving the world.

It's the Scouring of the Shire: the scarred and battle-weary hobbits had to save and restore the Shire all by themselves without Aragorn, Legolas, etc.. Except GRRM clearly wants to make it bigger and scarier.

In the books, it's clearly going to be sorcerer king Euron. The show? They chose Cersei to be the final human villain but she did fuck all in the end.

Daenerys doesn't qualify as the final human villain. One episode out of a seventy-three episode long series? And it wasn't even a full episode. She died in the first twenty minutes of the finale and broke bad in the last ten minutes of the previous. So she spent thirty minutes being D@NgErOuS and evul in a series that lasted what? 1,000 minutes?

But whatever. I'm wasting my time. You're one of those people who gobble up garbage if it's dressed up nice with special effects.

In comparison to the books, who did the show most heinously misinterpret?

It’s so hard. I hate the removal of abuse and toxic masculinity from Sam’s backstory. And he can only be truly brave once he beats rapists off of Gilly and kills an Other. It’s just such shit.

The same applies to Theon, who got majorly screwed over by the sausage breakfast scene and the fact that they took away all the physical elements of his torture aside from the obvious. Plus, adding Sansa to his arc diverts it from him. The whole point of Jeyne was emphasizing the loss of innocence of Winterfell and the idea of identity.

Tyrion got screwed over too, and so did Peter Dinklage. Dinklage could have been so brilliant in the story of a dwarf whose internalized ableism and inferiority complex slowly turn him into the monster everyone thought that he was. But instead we get Tyrion the Goodest Mensch.

I have to give a shout out to Varys, who essentially sat around doing nothing for 8 years. By removing Aegon, they removed the entire point of his character. And then there’s Littlefinger, who had a mix of horrible acting and terrible writing.

This isn't even getting into what they did to all of the female characters. They just didn't get Catelyn or Sansa, and saw both of their feminine aspects as weaknesses that had to be fixed rather than being what made them strong.

UUUUGGGHHH, there are so many.

Also Barristan. Jesus, those guys are jerks.

Oh god, Stannis, who they literally killed off because THEY STRAIGHT UP DIDN’T LIKE HIS CHARACTER.

There are so many.

Yeah.

Who didn't get screwed over.

I say that it all boils down to the three central characters of the entire story: Daenerys, Jon and Bran.

Daenerys and Bran suffer so much because the imbecile showrunners we had thought it was a good idea to castrate a fantasy show of its fantastical, more magical elements. Jon suffers so much because Jon is actually extremely intelligent and it is impossible to write characters smarter than you are.

Honestly, the R+L=J revelation did absolutely nothing for Jon. Why would such a big revelation only serve to tangentially drive Daenerys crazy? Why would she be unhappy with that? She logically has no reason to be unhappy or to want to force Jon to be silent. Why were they not married?

Bran is all the more egregious because those morons knew that Bran was the endgame king for how long? Four years at the least? Yet, they did nothing with him. Going from "I'm not Bran Stark anymore" to "I'll never be lord of anything" to "Why do you think I came here?"

I don’t know. There are so many heinously butchered characters that it’s hard to pick. I mean, are there any characters who weren’t butchered one way or another?

It is. And to make it even more shit and meaningless, Sam reverted back to being a coward just because. One episode he’s bragging about stuff, the next he’s paralysed with fear. One episode he tells Jon he is his BFF, the next Jon is sent into exile and he doesn't say anything.

The torture porn w/ Theon was atrocious, unnecessary, over-the-top, stupid. The stuff you’re not seeing and only imagining the horrors of is so much more powerful than the explicit in-your-face gore. Remember Jaws?

And this brings me to another serious issue w/ David and Dan and their choices... the level of their tone deafness is off the charts. I suppose they’re not big on “less is more”.

I would have liked very much to see Dinklage playing book Tyrion, and not this boring character the show created. And by the looks of it, how Dinklage seemed to be phoning it in for years now, I imagine he would have liked it as well. Filed under the ginormous “missed opportunities” list.

True. And Varys became even more of a non-entity after Littlefinger died (rather ridiculously, I might add).

WHAT. Are you saying a woman can be feminine AND strong? What a crazy insane idea... /s

so I will answer that specific question:

Yup.

Cersei standing in a tower, looking helpless, was just strange.

Daenerys turned into a villain in 1/256th of a second, I am guessing for shock value. She was portrayed as a protagonist for 7.5 seasons.

Oh that, a slight issue with the execution. Maybe the writing could be a tad better. Otherwise very satisfying (TM) and everything awesome (c) :smoking:

And stop ranting you lot! :commie:

If you burnt Dany's theme music on an LP at 33 RPM and played the last 5 seconds of the chorus backwards at 45 RPM, it's very clear what she's going to do. Just because you haven't done your homework you're depressing other folks who figured it all out and have wandered onto a rant-y thread by mistake. At least congratulate them on still being positive the show, give them directions how to get to another thread before continuing to rant :D

TBH I am completely indifferent to Daenerys. I had made a wild guess somewhere around season 3 (after reading the books) that Jon kills her. So I'm not surprised by the end, I just felt it lacked any modicum of finesse.

Which is why I cannot understand why the showrunners chose not to have more episodes in season 7 and 8, when they had the option to do so.

Cersei was not the main villain, and never was. PEOPLE in general were. Everything bad that happened, was because of PEOPLE's decisions.

Everything has degrees and Cersei is a person. So even going by 'people were the villains' id say cersei was still the 'main villain'.

I thought the thread was about characters that were butchered, as in, when you compare a show character to its book counterpart you go, “Whaaat, those are in no way, shape or form the same character”.

So, yeah, Bronn ended up w/ Highgarden and a seat n the council, but the character was butchered nonetheless. He ended up w/ power and gold, and I know that’s what matters on GoT, but there’s not much of book Bronn left.

And please, don’t even get me started on how badly Sansa was butchered. She ended as Queen in the North, so not an unhappy ending, I suppose. But there’s nothing, NOTHING, of book Sansa in that character. Just because she got a treat for all the rape, torture and being a stand-in for a minor character she endured doesn’t mean the chatacter’s ending was a good one. IMO.
