Doesn’t Sam still belong to the Night’s Watch?

Recommended Posts

Jon’s service ended when he died and was brought back. Easy way out. Sam on the other hand is still under oath or am I mistaken? Jon sent him to study to become a Maester while he was Lord Commander. The Nights Watch never truly ended and there are still survivors. Isn’t Sam an oath breaker in more ways than one?

Agree with you. The problem is D&D don't do tiresome details and wanted the heck to be done with the whole thing.

Royal command/pardon > Vows of the NW and the Kingsguard.

I've had this exact same discussion with a friend. We couldn't figure out why was he out of the NW and could marry and inherit (at least I think he married and inherited HH, but I could be wrong).

That sounds about right, considering Tywin wanted Jaime to quit the Kingsguard to be restored as heir to Casterly Rock. Plus, there don't seem to be any consequences of Sam allegedly impregnating Gilly or stealing books from the Citadel, assuming that's public knowledge.

There are more examples; Stannis was going to release Jon from NW by using a royal decree, as he was going to legitimize Jon and appoint him as Lord of Winterfell. (S05xE02) And Lannisters released Barristan Selmy from the Kingsguard by using a royal decree. (S01xE08) In the end power is all that matters.

Sam should have died a million times so he should belong to House Tombstone.
