I dont think you can blame violent media for mass shotters, but, as with books and movies, and really, all art, they have the power of being very influential in individuals (and some cases, influential in societies). All media has influence in us, its inevitable, thats why i think you have to talk and educate people so we can deal with that in a healthy way, and that goes for video games, tv, youtube, even advertisment.

In terms of being a possitive for people with violent tendencies i dont know about that. I always thought that porn could help pedophiles in the same way (claryfing that i dont mean porn with real children), and recently i read that it could actually be worse or just act as some form of escalation.

Well this certainly doesn't help to create an impression of a sane, well-adjusted sub-culture:

'They came in with guns': Fortnite world champion Bugha 'swatted' during livestream

I don't recall hearing about the 2017 case of murder by cop that's mentioned in the article.

I imagine it doesn't happen a lot, but it happens enough that pretty much all gamers know what Swatting means. When you have millions of people involved in something you are bound to get nutcases. But every time these things get press time it feed the political narrative and fuels people's fears.

Yes, there's no question that art influences people. It's really about the nature of the influence. Generally speaking art influences people's opinions and attitudes, but I don't think it influences your basic personality. Art might make you more or less racist or more or less sexist, but it won't significantly change how you choose to manifest your new level of racism or sexism.

Some of the people who do horrible thing do cite influenze from certain works of art. I guess the question is, if you take their word as truth. I would think they are saying the truth, although i should point out, that i belive you cant attribute one single cause to something like the shooting of john lenon, for example.

Like I said art can influence you into having more (or less) anti-social attitudes. But it doesn't make them become the kind of person who will go out and commit horrible acts. It might give them a reason to do it, but they were the sort of person who would be up for doing horrible things before the art gave them a purpose and excuse for it.

On a completely different tack:

Ninja 'disgusted' after Twitch accidentally promotes porn stream on his dormant channel

I think it's a bit off for Twitch to use people's channels to advertise when people are offline, but if the ToS allows Twitch to do it then I don;t think there's any real cause to complain. But if a user wants to deactivate their profile they should be able to do it. I don't blame Twitch / Amazon for the porn bit, really. According to the article streaming porn is against Twitch's ToS, I just wonder if Twitch is doing all it can to quickly identify porn streams and take it down. Obviously porn streamers know they're going to be taken down pretty quickly, I wonder if they are using their brief appearances on Twitch to attract audiences to their actual streaming services.

You haven't spent much time around toddlers, I assume? ;)

A joke I know, but toddlers are as different as adults when it comes to aggression. Some are horrible little shits, and some are darlings. I'll let people decide for themselves on which end of that spectrum aggression sits. We're all born selfish, but that's not the same as aggression.

We are subject to the influences of our hormones and testosterone does increase aggression. But we're not slaves to our hormones. Saying that we are inextricably violent suggests that our rational faculty that we can use to consciously make decisions about how we want to behave is somehow not part of our inherent self, and we must allow our lizard brain to determine our actions.

So, Angry Birds 2 will be the best reviewed video game movie of all time? 72% on Rotten Tomatoes at the moment.

I liked the first movie for what it was. And this seems like it might be a genuine improvement.

Had an interesting series of events in CK2.

At the start of it I was playing as Duke Gerald of Normandy, vassal to Charlemagne. Charlemagne was (at that point) ruling all of Francia and Saxony, but was having a tough time handling the endless Saxon rebellions. Matters were only exacerbated when the Danes invaded, so I decided that Duke Gerald should assist Charlemagne in defeating them. Over the course of the war I captured a Danish chieftain, who I had executed when he proved too poor to pay his own ransom and no one else wanted to do it.  Charlemagne won the war and that was that, or so I thought.

Fast forward several decades and I am now playing as Duke Gerald's grandson, Armand, who has only recently become the King of England. I am notified that the Danes are preparing an invasion and I have a year to prepare. Easy enough, I think. Only, King Armand's brother, Duke Tybalt of Normandy and some other provinces in Franace, throws his considerable weight behind a rebellious faction which triggers a civil war. I scramble to defeat the rebels in England while my brother Tybalt squats in Normandy with his sizeable army. Eventually, after pacifying the English lords, King Armand sails across the Channel and defeats his brother. The civil war ends and I throw the lot of them in prison.

Meanwhile, the Danes have invaded, and a force significantly larger than my now-depleted army is sitting in Essex besieging my capital. It is at this point I notice who is leading them - the grandson of the petty tribal chief Duke Gerald had executed decades ago. He has somehow become King of Denmark in the ensuing years just as Armand has become King of England.

Noting this, my King crosses the Channel once again, ready for round 2 in this inter-generational saga. Alongside him is his treasonous brother, freed from prison and appointed as commander due to his huge marshal score. Given I am outnumbered, I am taking all the help I can get.

The English and Danish armies engage in Essex, the former attacking from the north to fight on more favourable ground. Despite the numbers it looks like the English will edge out the Danes, due to the feudal warriors being better than the tribal Danes. But just as I start to feel confident, King Armand, commanding the centre, finds himself duelling an enemy commander and given the choice to engage or flee. I choose to engage and King Armand is cut down, slain by the enemy commander.

Despite this, the English go on to triumph over the Danes, who are routed from the battlefield and forced to flee England. The crown passes to the King's 19 y/o son and heir, Gerald II. Not being a warrior, the new King gives command of the English armies to good old Uncle Tybalt, who follows the Danes back to Normandy and routs them a second time. The war ends shortly after.

Duke Tybalt goes on to become King Gerald's most loyal vassal and the hammer with which the young King bludgeons his rebellious Anglo-Saxon rebels to death with for years to come. Years later, the King of Denmark dies under suspicious circumstances, no one ever discovering who the real culprit* was. King Gerald becomes known as the Just and manages to unite most of the remaining English provinces under his banner, also marrying the powerful Irish Chieftess of Mumu who had managed to expand over more than half of the island. All's well that ends well.

Unfortunately it wasn't me.

Name reservations are available on WoW Classic...

I have my old human Pally and dwarf warrior all set and ready.  I had originally picked the Faerlina server as an east coast PvP location, but apparently lots of people are concerned because that's where all the streamers are set up.  :dunno:  They seem to be concerned that there will be mass shenanigans that would interrupt how you want to play.  So I deleted them there and moved over to Thalnos.

Has anyone tried this Playstation Now thing? I've been thinking about eventually getting a PS4 to play Demon Souls, The Last of Us and a few other games. I haven't owned a playstation since #2. But apparently I can sign up for the free trial of Playstation now and play The Last of Us on my under-powered laptop? It's just kinda hard for me to wrap my head around. (Demon Souls isn't on the list of games :( )

PS Now isn't available here, so I have no idea how good of a service it is.

How video game made Aussie 'laughing stock of the world'

Australia's decision to ban the popular zombie survival video game DayZ because of in-game drug use has made the country look like "the wet blanket and laughing stock of the whole world", a state MP has said

The drug being cannabis apparently.

If a video game can be banned for drug use, does that mean TV series and movies are also banned if there is drug use? If not, then this is some major censorship hypocrisy. They have an 18+ rating, so it's not like they would be putting a product aimed at kids onto the market.

It almost sounds too good to be true, but I guess they figure they're not losing many console sales by letting us play exclusives that are at least a generation old. I think I may try the free trial tonight and play Until Dawn (that choose your own adventure horror game.) If that goes smoothly I'll finally play The Last of Us.

Finally lost interest in Fire Emblem maybe 1/3 of the way through my third run. The problem is that the first ten chapters or so are basically the same whoever you choose. I like the Golden Deer people but it's just too much fire emblem. and Too easy too. Even the first time on hard the only hard maps were the last two and only due to the shear number of enemies, and the monsters which I don't like as a feature.

Never got around to trying Playstation Plus, but Remnant: From the Ashes (a title so generic I had to hit the home button cause I had no idea what I was playing.) is really great. Dark Souls but a third person shooter. lots of log entries and notes like Resident Evil and Fallout. Plus unlike a lot of games these days only takes 20 minutes or so to get going.

but best of all it's HARD. My most recent point of comparison in the genre is The Division 2, and here instead of just bullet sponges often I get swarmed by a huge amount of low heath enemies, and it's terrifying.

This young dude I work with said he didn’t enjoy The Witcher 3 because, “it wasn’t worth $60”. I thought he was just trolling, but sadly he wasn’t. I was gonna wait until the Switch version to replay it but defending its honor has lead me to forget that notion.

I didn’t play Gwent on my original run so I am now, and I find myself obsessed with building my card collections up. A couple of characters just have too good of a set for me to beat them now but it’s really fun. I’m starting to understand all the strategies also. I usually use the my Northern set and make my opponent use most of their big cards in the first round, then get those 2 extra cards for the last round and drop the hammer.

I did have to get used to the funky controls again though. Geralt feels like he’s on ice.

Was getting a bit bored so I started a new Dark Souls character on my switch a few weeks back and have decided to do a nice easy fun run.  Started as a pyro, got the Drake Sword which took me through Sens, then went back and went through the Catacombs to get the Gravelord Sword, took out O&S pretty easily with that thing, got a Black Knight Great Axe so I havel'd up and took down 4 kings next, and now I'm right before Seath.  Should be able to move onto the DLC by the end of this week.  Been fun playing this again.

I started Batman Arkham Asylum and it's pretty great so far.  No jumping, though.  All game developers should view jumping as mandatory.

Arkham City is the highlight of the series to everyone I've ever met.

I only mention this while you're on Asylum because I wasn't crazy about certain parts of the game and don't view it as highly as many other do, but Arkham City is fucking aces all the way across. So if, like me, you don't think the first one is a masterpiece but you like it anyway then I highly highly recommend the sequel.
