Cavill ain't going to be doing WoT any time soon when he's starring in The Witcher.

I know that :( I was just thinking in who would be the perfect fit.

I'd say about a decade or even less ago, Ben Barnes was most people's Galad.

That's interesting... Never thought of him that way... Was once picturing him as Logain, though.

Egwene not being there when Rand discovers he can channel would be a pretty major story-arc fail, IMO. One of the core aspects of EotW that stood out to me was that Rand threw a fit when he found out Egwene could channel, whereas Egwene barely hesitated before telling him she didn't care that he could. For me, that was an important moment, and it makes it clear that their later distance wasn't because she was creeped out by his ability to channel.

I honestly don't remember that in EotW. Not really sure I would call that a core aspect, but I can see your point. Though it could be an aspect of a season 1 that includes the first 2 books, and occur in a different sequence.

Yes, Siuan is fairn and blue eyed. But I rather hope they take a bit of licence and cast an African American actor instead.

As for Lan, look at the New Spring comics. That was author approved.

Why do you want Suian to be black? Why are so many people so hung up on changing major characters etchnicity? There is plenty of diversity to go around, but don't go changing a major character just to be PC. Besides, even as Juilin is described, he would not be black because his hair is described as straight and flat. Someone on here said they read that Tear is supposed to have strong Spanish influences, so Latinos would be great for the non-caucasian Tairens. I think the Sea Folk should be cast with black people, or Indian would be great too (as in from India).

I don't read comic books, but maybe the library has them.

(BTW, you may have noticed that I don't use the term African-American. That's because there are a lot of black people in the world who are either not African or not American. It is just an American PC term that excludes a lot of the black, or Negro, people>)

Gawyn is 6'3" according to the Companion. Galad is about the same IIRC though he doesn't have a height listed in the Companion.

Speaking of them, I wonder how much the Trakands will feature in the first season, they are pretty important characters later on, but they are also in one chapter of Book 1 and don't appear much in Book 2 either except Elayne in the last quarter of the book.

I am going to be purchasing the companion VERY soon. I hope they do introduce Elayne, Gawyn and Galad in the first season, because that's when Elayne and Rand become infatuated with each other. I love the scene of him falling into the garden.

If they do plan to give Logain a bigger role from the start as rumored, I could see Trakands being introduced via the moment when Logain is presented to Morgase, something only mentioned in the book. Afterwards, maybe Rand interacts with them as per the book, and we may even see their departure to Tar Valon, again with Logain.

Also, I could see Egwene separating from the group in Caemlyn (she doesn't do much post this anyway), and joining the Aes Sedai escorting Logain north; this at Moiraine's insistence. That way she meets Elayne and Gawyn earlier.

They need to have a reason for Rand to be taken before Morgase, i.e. being on the palace grounds without permission. That is when Elaida remarks on his coloring and has her fortelling. The whole thing can be done in a matter of 10-12 minutes, and it introduces Elayne, Gawyn, Galad, Morgase, Elaida, and Tallanvor and tells us a good deal of their personalities (except Tallanvor).

Your idea regarding Egwene would be very good, except for what fionwe1987 says below.

Rafe Judkins has said that Logain IS going to have a greater role, which I think is great.

A decade ago, I'd have said Ian Sommerhalder was more in the direction of RJ's description. Now, I don't know. Harry Lloyd, maybe? Though he's in Brave New World.

Cavill is much too old anyway. Harry Lloyd is certainly good looking, perhaps he might even make me forget what I was going to say, but he is too old as well. Unless they use a lot of make up and/or filters to make him look younger. When I looked him up I was shocked to see he played Viseyrs!

In my mind Galad looks like a young Hugh Grant.

Plus, if Moiraine sends Egwene to Tar Valon from Camelyn, Nyaneave would almost certainly accompany her. Although she would definitely be torn between going with Egwene to protect her, and staying with the boys to protect them from Moiraine. Given her animosity toward Moiraine, she could very well choose to stay with the boys, and then she could be the one to tell Egwene that Rand can channel when she arrives in the Tower. That would be a very shocking revelation for Egwene and they could do a lot with it that way as well, since she they will all be in Falme by the end of TGH anyway. It would give Egwene more time for training before gets abducted by Liandrin.

He's only 7 or so years older than Galad in the books. Yeah, he'd work pretty well I suppose.

Speaking as a woman, Ben Barnes is really good looking with a beard, but without, meh. And Galad doesn't have a beard. I'm actually finding that to be the case with a lot of actors when I fan casting the really handsome ones. I could see him as Logain actually, although he's 38, and Logain should be about mid 20s. And his age is important because men who can channel don't survive to be much older than that. But they can do wonders with make up.

If they could make him look late 20s, I would say Taim. Taim is from Saldea, and even though Mamoa doesn't really have tilted eyes, his eyebrows give that impression.

Here’s a shout for Tom Holland as Mat. Not an obvious choice but I think he could do that character justice. Also another out there thought, Jon Hamm for Gareth Bryne.

Tom Holland looks like a Boy Scout. Mat needs to have a mischievous look to him. If he could accomplish that, yeah, I think he'd be great. In my mind Mat looks like Clint Eastwood in his  Rowdy Yates days. I wish Alex Pettyfer was younger. He looks like a great Rand to me. And either Max Theriot or Richard Madden for Perrin (but bulkier). Again, too old. But that 's what they look like in my mind anyway. We know the superboys (and supergirls) will almost certainly be young unknowns.

Jon Hamm could work for Gareth. I don't think he will be hard to cast though. He just needs to look like a hardened soldier and fairly tall.

Firstly, I have no idea what being "PC" has to do with the choice of actors for a show. Secondly, no, Tairens can be as dark skinned as the Sea Folk, as we have seen with characters like Salita, a Tairen Sitter for the Yellow.

African people can have straight hair. I cannot believe I had to type out that sentence.

As for why I'd like a black actor to be cast as Siuan, its because the first few seasons have no characters who can be described as such. Since Siuan is from an area in the books where black skin is quite common, and is a pretty major character, she seemed like the natural choice for increasing casting diversity, which I know they are planning on anyway. Min is another character for whom casting a black actor would make sense.

People from India can be as dark as from Africa, or look Caucasian, to everywhere in between. So maybe get more specific on that front.

You do not have to read a comic book to google pictures from it.

People who complain about being PC, then use flat out offensive words...

To the specific point, I used African American, as opposed to black, because I've always heard Siuan speak in an American accent. Though I guess I was being PC too, since I wasn't using flat out racist terms...

I am not saying that Cavill is Meryl Streep but he did show range Momoa hadn't. Anyway, that was not my point. Cavill would be a perfect Galad. His Superman is Galad of comic world - handsome, brooding, stickler to the rules.

Too buff, imo. More like a light-skinned Lan than Galad.

The reason I said it seems to me to be PC is because you're wanting to change a character's description just for the sake of including a  very dark skinned person in the first season, no other reason. It doesn't enhance the story in any way. Jordan's world is quite diverse as it is, and we will see that by the second season (indications are that the first season will be books one and two, so they'll be in Tear by season 2). I like adaptations to stick to the books as closely as possible.

I do not think Min would be that dark. My reasoning is this. Most of the books are from the POV of one or another of the Emond's Fielders. We know they have darker skin than most Andoran nobles like Elayne, Cairenhein and Aiel (and Suian), because in their minds they note the fairness of those people's skin. They also note the darkness of some Tairens and the Sea Folk, and we know that dark hair and dark eyes are the norm for Two Rivers people. That indicates to me that they are somewhere between, because people tend to judge the lightness/darkness of other people's skin in relation to their own. So when they don't note other people's skin as being fair, dark, coppery, or whatever, then it seems logical that they are much like themselves. And Min is never described as dark skinned (like the Sea Folk are).

Also, why do you assume dark always means black? "Dark" leaves a lot of room for variation.

I have never met any African, or black people that have naturally straight hair, so I am speaking from my experience. I've known a lot of black women who chemically straighten their hair or wear straight wigs. Admittedly, I'd never been to Africa.

Also, I don't think it's necessary to be insulting. I make a point never to insult anyone on this forum no matter how stupid I think something they say might be, and I'd appreciate the same in return.

Gotcha. I was just explaining that I didn't in an effort to be inclusive of black people from all over the world. (Because I know there are people from all over the world on this forum.)

That is a good point. He had the looks and personality. Have any of you seen him in "The Tudors" years ago? He was very good.

I do hope they stick to Jordan's descriptions as closely as possible though. I think the book fans will be the backbone of the tv audience at first, so I think they should throw us as many bones as possible! Like if they don't have Rosamund Pike wear a dark wig and dark contacts to play Moiraine, I will not be happy. A blond Moiraine would be very jarring to those of us who have had her firmly ingrained in our minds as a brunette for 10 years or more! I know it won't always be possible, but where it's as easy as a wig, or contacts, or using spray tanning to make someone darker, then there really is no reason not to be true to the books.

I will admit, I am a book purist and I don't like artistic license unless it is necessary whether it be a book adaptation, or historical fiction, or a docudrama.

For instance, in Harry Potter, why couldn't Daniel Radcliffe just wear green contacts? In the books, his mother's green eyes were very distinctive and one of Harry's prominent physical characteristics and much commented was that he had his mother's eyes. I know it might sound silly, but it always bugged me cuz it wouldn't have been difficult to do!

I used to love these books as a kid. Reread book 1 not so long ago and let's just say some things are best left in the past,. Overall I think there's tonnes of potential for a good show but it'd mean gutting an awful lot of the shit too.

My main concern would be the casting. WoT has an absolutely enormous number of characters and most of them are very young so will need to be actors in their early 20s or younger. The likes of Arya, Sansa and Bran's actors were fine for the first few seasons of GoT when they were children but their poor acting was very evident for the latter seasons. It's hard to find good talent with actors aged 16-22

Really looking forward to seeing how these books translate to television but the pessimist in me is saying this won't be a great success.

Also I have to completely agree with SansaJonRule in all of the above.  She's already answered most of it but I will go back to Min. How does casting a black actress for Min make any sense whatsoever? This is never how she's described, it's not how she is imagined, it's not how any fan art depicts her. It makes no fucking sense.

Most characters in the 16-22 age range aren't usually portrayed by actors in the 16-22 age range. None of the characters are so young that they are supposed to be perceived as children (unlike many of the GoT characters). They're all young adults, which can and I expect will be played by actors in their 20s or 30s.

Yes, I have seen him in "The Tudors". Overall, Cavill can act. The entire Superman business is someone else's fault.

That said, I am with you. Unfortunately, Jordan's world is not easy because his mix of cultures in creative process makes a lot of roles borderline impossible to cast. We have such vast differences in perception of the same character - and we are not talking about actions or psyche, we are talking about the looks :D

I believe Pike will either die the hair and wear extensions or use the wig. Ideally, the producers should use the already existing fanbase and expand it, much like GoT did in last season (but unfortunately lost its track in Season 5 with book fans, and in Season 8 with everyone else). Jordan's world is so vibrant, so full of colors, full of magic and I hope they'll represent that accordingly.

As for Harry Potter... The messy hair and the eyes :D Two things Radcliffe was never able to pull off. It was especially jarring during the 8th movie when Snape tells him "you have your mother's eyes." It is a small thing, but it is immensely important.
