And if you think getting buzzed like that is unique among academics, you're being entirely naive. At least among political scientists. Hell, when you're presentation is in the morning at most conferences I've been to, it's almost expected you're still drunk, and it's often mentioned explicitly. Perhaps a drink could help lower excess formality and anxiety to get that sociable touch. But I feel it's a slippery slope. Teetotal Don Draper would certainly lose that creative touch and becone a boring Jim Cutler type. But the drinking tends to get worse and soon you're in the abyss. Conflicting Thought Posted July 10, 2019 Share Posted July 10, 2019 I think drugs (including alcohol), can be use for creative inspiration, and some artists did indeed create some of their best work while on the influenze. But, taking drugs does not an artist make. Its like the troubled genious trope. You are not a good artist becouse you are an asshole or becouse you drink to create. We need to get rid of that mentality cuz it justifies, not just peoples assholishness (bukowsky) and their potential drug addiction (bukowsky). Stephen King wrote some of his best shit high on cocaine and alcohol. He did not lose his talent though from going sober. He is still prolific and puts out some great novels.
