I have never witnessed a single person helping his / her career by being addict of anything.  Just the opposite.

I'll just respond to this because I didn't even bother to look at the Workable Socialism thread for awhile and it definitely does not need to be there.  I understand your concern, and it's appreciated.  My point wasn't that not I'm balls off the wall in every - or any - lecture.  It's that I'll have a few drinks before class to get buzzed because otherwise my lectures are often referred to as boring and my delivery horribly uninspired.  Hell, this is even the case for most if not all of my conference presentations and even MA/diss overview defenses.  Is that a good thing or something to be proud of?  Of course fucking not, it's a goddamn crutch.  But the title of the thread is "workable alcoholism," so I thought I'd empathize.  And if you think getting buzzed like that is unique among academics, you're being entirely naive.  At least among political scientists.  Hell, when you're presentation is in the morning at most conferences I've been to, it's almost expected you're still drunk, and it's often mentioned explicitly.

Perhaps a drink could help lower excess formality and anxiety to get that sociable touch. But I feel it's a slippery slope. Teetotal Don Draper would certainly lose that creative touch and becone a boring Jim Cutler type. But the drinking tends to get worse and soon you're in the abyss.

But then we wouldn't have the the hippy Coke commercial!  Anyway, I agree, which is why my first post in this thread ended with:

The downside of being a functional alcoholic, though, is that you can very quickly become a non-functional alcoholic.

I think drugs (including alcohol), can be use for creative inspiration, and some artists did indeed create some of their best work while on the influenze. But, taking drugs does not an artist make. Its like the troubled genious trope.

You are not a good artist becouse you are an asshole or becouse you drink to create. We need to get rid of that mentality cuz it justifies, not just peoples assholishness (bukowsky) and their potential drug addiction (bukowsky). But it perpetuates this vision of the suffering artist to the people who "consume" the art.

Phil Dick is someone who used a great deal of drugs during his lifetime and left an amazing body of work. He always claimed that he never wrote while intoxicated. I always wonder if he could do the same if he had gone in a different direction.

Stephen King wrote some of his best shit high on cocaine and alcohol. He did not lose his talent though from going sober. He is still prolific and puts out some great novels.
