Watch, Watched, Watching: Midsommar Night Blues

Last night I watched The Space Between Us on Netflix and fell in love with the movie. I went in with no expectations having never heard about it and knowing nothing about it. It had a real 80's sci-fi buddy or love story movie feel to it. Like Starman, E.T., Flight of the Navigator, Spacecamp, any of those movies, except for the updated sfx and striving to be as scientifically plausible as possible. It stars Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, Gary Oldman, and Carla Cugino and all of them were excellent in it. Apparently it was a huge flop in the theaters which is probably why I don't remember ever hearing about it, and if the above movies I mentioned are too schmaltzy for you then this movie isn't for you either, but otherwise I recommend it.

I can’t recall if I’ve asked this before, but what are your guys opinion on going to the movies alone? I’ve never done it before, but I really want to see Midsommar and none of my friends want to or already have.

I used to go to the movies by myself all the time. When I was 7-years-old my dad would drop me off at the local theater on a Friday night by myself to keep me out of his hair for a while (free range parenting FTW!).

I used to go to matinees a lot. I'd go in at noon pay for my first movie and then see 1 or 2 more without paying by just theater hopping. Movie theaters let you get away with a lot on weekday early shows, not a lot of management going on during those times, or at least it used to be that way. It was fine. Like Heartofice said, during those times it's a bunch of people there by themselves, nobody cares.

I have changed though, I don't like going by myself anymore. Twice now I've almost went to see Endgame by myself but ultimately just wasn't that enthused and ended up changing my mind at the last minute. I've finally got someone to go see it with next week though, and I get to see the (more finished?) version with the Stan Lee tribute and extra scenes added. So it works out.

The problem is I'm sooooooooo slow with watching TV shows. I haven't even watched season 2 of Killing Eve and I thought season 1 was amazing.

And I haven't even watched season 1 *or* watched season 2 of fleabag. The last show I properly watched was S1 of The Good Fight, and I guess S2 of Big Little Lies.

I'm terrible at starting new things that I'm not sufficiently excited about.

I go for the film, I don't care if somebody goes with me or not.

As a shit talker, I like to go with other people if I can. It's just more fun talking about the film afterwards or seeing other people's reactions to it. That being said, if no one else is available, I won't stay home. A movie without company is still better than no movie at all.

Man, Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok are both >> Captain Marvel.

On that I do agree on, although both are so far removed from the standard MCU aesthetic that they should be applauded. I saw Black Panther the other day and I have to admit I was pretty impressed by what Ryan Coogler put together. I still think Thor: Ragnarok is a better film, but the set design, costuming and directing in this were really on point. It also had some of the best villains I have ever seen in an MCU film

Spoiler

Too bad they killed off both Klaue and Killmonger

There were a few funny things in the film though. The whole idea of Wakanda makes me giggle. Superadvanced nation which secludes itself from the world but still settles matters of succession through single combat? Please :lmao:

It was also ridiculously funny how much more charismatic Michael B. Jordan was than Chadwick Boseman.

Spoiler

Really such a shame they killed him off, because I'd love to see Killmonger return more often.

I liked Shazam more than Captain Marvel tbh which would be irrelevant except for the name fight and coming out at the same time so I was inevitabely comparing them. I'm surprised you did think it had more spark than the average Marvel though, since I thought it was a pretty heavy step back towards phase 1 after th two I've mentioned, which is by no means bad but we've moved on, and with a heavy dollop of terrible action direction too.

Shazam was superfun. What I liked about Captain Marvel was first & foremost the cast, huge fan of Jude Law, Brie Larson and Ben Mendehlson. I also appreciated the structure it had. The fact that it started in media res made it structurally a bit more interesting than the normal fair. And then finally I appreciated some of the random humor more than usual

Spoiler

the fact that Talos has an Australian accent kills me. The flerken/cat shennanigans was also fun.

I find Black Panther frustrating because it has to settle for just being a really, really, good superhero movie when greatness was there for the taking with just a few changes. I feel like the titular character got a bit shafted by a kind of rote character arc when he was so fucking cool and compelling in Civil War while Michael B. Jordan is the best villain one could ever hope for. They're vastly different characters in vastly different films, but I found Killmonger just as fascinating as Heath Ledger's Joker. I just wish the movie around him had the same kind of narrative focus that Nolan's movies have. That's more of a Marvel CU thing, I think though so it's hard to even judge the movie too hard and like I said it's really, really, good.

Eh, I like Civil War more than a lot of folks but I think that's a bold statement.

I don’t think it’s even close. Civil War is vastly superior movie as are Endgame and Infinity War. I’m surprised it’s even up for debate.

Even more important is Black Panther is more interesting and better written and directed in Civil War than his own movie

Sure about T'Challa being better in Civil War, but people have good points that the underlying conflict between Stark and Rodgers isn't really sufficient to drive the conflict. And the 'civil war' turns out to be a mildly-combative sparring session.

I’d rather have a Stark Rogers conflict than another one of those poorly CGI’d waterfall battles.

Charitte at War

It's a true story about working at a hospital while under Nazi occupation. It's a pretty good movie in that it's a bleak portrayal of how mind warped the the ideology was even within otherwise educated, upper income class people.

There's also a resistance under the radar and some heroic Drama from many of the staff that covertly wanted the Germans to lose the War, horrifying patient experiments, air raids, etc.

Very interesting story imo.

Also saw the third episode of Gentleman Jack. It's still a fascinating series. I wonder why not more people are talking about this.

Because over here all the talking has come and gone because GJ was on HBO eons ago here.  A lot of publications did articles, recapped all the episodes, etc.  Also, here it is HBO, and many if not most people don't have HBO.

And I've seen a lot of writing about it over in the UK too -- particularly because Sally Wainwright.

You just don't hang out in the right places. You hang out here, where a female-centered series of any kind tends to not be of interest to this sf/f/superhero, or gangster, lots of shoot em up violence / action oriented audience -- as you can see by which shows, film and series get the most admiration in this thread.  This audience adored The Wire, but was basically eh about Treme that wasn't any of these, and found The Deuce disappointing as it wasn't the sort of porn thing they expected.

I just finished watching the Dungeons & Dragons movie for the first time since my best friend (who was a D&D type while I was not) dragged me to see it in theaters and we got lit the fuck up.

I gotta say, I misjudged this film for all these years. Jeremy Irons is a force. I can honestly say I've never seen such acting in my entire life.

Imagine if Tommy Weisau's performance in The Room was delivered by an Oscar Award winning leading man. Exactly the same in every respect, but delivered by Jeremy Irons. Then you will have an inadequate but understandable basis from which to project.

It's fucking amazing. I highly recommend. Skip the entire 2nd act, because Irons isn't in it, but the rest is prescription filmmaking.

Honestly, only reason I couldn't bring myself to keep watching it is because Franco is an idiot. I adore maggie gyllenhaal though, she was in a series called The Honorable Women, which almost no one watched.

It's the best thing ever? I don't get to do it as often I used to since I got together with someone who is annoyingly compatible with me and wants to see 95% of the films I want to see. But it's not something that I would think twice about doing. Completely normal thing to do. I can't imagine only being able to watch films that another person wanted to watch. That would be weird.

Also go see Midsommar.
