Can direwolves mate? Or will they become extinct?

Hey, sorry if this has been discussed before. I was wondering if direwolves would die at the end of the story. GRRM introduced us with these magical beasts, but except for Nymeria there aren’t female direwolves (as far as we know).

Nymeria has been killing wolves who tried to get near to her, which means she needs an Alpha male.

So do you think we’ll see Summer or Ghost breeding with Nymeria in TWoW? Or do you think GRRM intends to extinct their lines?

There are more direwolves north of the Wall. The ones featured in the story were just born from their mother, south of the Wall (an event never fully explained), which means she was fertilized by a male direwolf.

According to Leaf:

Quote

The giants are almost gone as well, they who were our bane and our brothers. The great lions of the western hills have been slain, the unicorns are all but gone, the mammoths down to a few hundred. The direwolves will outlast us all, but their time will come as well. In the world that men have made, there is no room for them, or us." - Bran III, ADWD.

BTW, I really like the next quote

"She seemed sad when she said it, and that made Bran sad as well. It was only later that he thought, Men would not be sad. Men would be wroth. Men would hate and swear a bloody vengeance. The singers sing sad songs, where men would fight and kill."

Added to my signature :)

I don't think they will go extinct.  Jon and Arya will both die and their spirits will live as direwolves.  So yes they will breed as direwolves.  Jon and Arya will mate.  Arya will whelp a litter of direwolves to form their pack.

I was reading the very same Bran’s chapter in ADwD yesterday! That’s what made me wonder, Bran is almost a man and in time he’d be aware of the direwolves breeding.. and at the same time Nymeria is being surrounded by male wolves. It feels like George isn’t going to abandon direwolves to extinct after all.

But... while they’re in the direwolves skin? Isn’t that a bit sinister? I don’t think George will write a wolf porn. It’d be super weird.

I meant like Nymeria’d breed but we’d only get to see her pups.

I meant Jon, Arya, and Rickon will die.  But as you know, they get to live a second life as wolves or beetles.  Jon and Arya can become mates and breed in their second lives.  Which, I think, will happen in the last book.

The wolves will come again.  Literally.

I beleive that they can, but I'd imagine that Shaggydog would be a better match Nymeria. I'm fairly sure that they won't be able to repopulate the North, though. With only one direwolf sister left, the offspring will be heavily inbred. The  second generation will be the product of siblings and the third generation would be, at best,  the product of uncle and niece. By the fourth generation, the pups could file a claim to the Iron Throne. Joking aside, I'm fairly sure that we won't be getting an Adam and Eve situation with the direwolves, as they'd eventually become sterile. Making hybrids with wolves may be a possibility.
