Zorral
Beer is of massive importance to civilization! So I pay a lot of attention, because beer is of massive importance even within these fallen times. It's one of the earliest signatures all across the middle east and ancient Egypt. One of my best friends is an Egyptologist, academic specialty nautical history of ancient Egypt (yes, she reads hieroglyphs). She's told me that just as in the days of Rome and medieval Europe, the Egyptian taverns tended to hire a network of local farmer families to help keep their beer supply flowing. Beer was foundational to Egyptian life and culture, high and low, in way that wine became in northern Mediterranean life.
HoodedCrow
Beer comes from better farming practices! It is liquid bread. I didn’t care for beer( especially hoppy) until learning about different flavors of hops. ( piney, citrusy, etc) and craft brews. Hops are an important crop in Washington State. I’d check my grammar, but does anyone care:) I saw a theory, though, that posed that the enlightenment was partly fueled by a switch to tea, coffee and hot chocolate. It's often invoked, though without proof, that industrialization couldn't have happened without the massive supplies of coffee and tea out of the colonies. Well, the the massive infusion of wealth produced and provided via slavery and slave labor etc., certainly financed the Industrial Revolution! Others have said that clock making and the capacity to construct individual time pieces played a large role as well -- making it possible to easily divide the day and night and keep track of who is supposed to be working where and when and for how long. thus, hourly, as opposed to 'piece work' payment to labor -- which further accelerated the movement from working at home to working in a centralized factory. HoodedCrow
I’m not sure that proof is possible in this case, but there are intriguing correlations. Great point about the measurement of time and labor issues! It’s not very comfortable, is it? Rich people got leisure and slaves got slavery. And my ancestors left the motherland for the New World and lost their “ accents”.
A True Kaniggit
Beers are nice one at a time. Two at most. Unless you’re fishing. In which case you are drinking beer from a can until you run out.

HoodedCrow
Oh yes, safety first:) I am a scuba diver, when well, so maybe I’m extra concerned about that...drinking plus scuba is very dangerous!
HoodedCrow
Maarsen, Tom Thompson’s art is wonderful. Canoeing while drinking is also not a great idea. May he Rest In Peace. In fact, canoeing alone if you don’t have good balance and some experience is a bad idea. I did read some theory that Thompson was murdered. A True Kaniggit
They already canceled work tomorrow. It was -40 (F and C actually meet there) the other day. -20 today and snowing but they don't shut us down for a thing. When I get home from work though I think I've got a bottle of Jameson around the house somewhere that will taste just about right. Cheers

briantw
One of my friends was nice enough to grab a bottle of Woodford's latest special edition release, Very Fine Rare Bourbon. According to the press release, along with some additional digging done online, it appears to be a blend that contains the oldest bourbon Woodford has released at 17 years, and overall it appears to be a blend of bourbons that range between 11 and 17 years. The last Woodford Reserve bottle I've purchased was their 2019 Batch Proof, which I very much enjoyed. I expected to be let down by this one, but to my surprise it's really, really damn good. It's got a very rich maraschino cherry note going for it, and you can really taste the age. It also punches above its weight. I tasted this without looking closely at the bottle first and had to go double check the proof. I was shocked it was only around 90. I would have pegged it at 100 minimum. It's rare that I would buy a second bottle of something that cost $130 (plus another ten in tax), but I am pretty sure I'd grab this without question if I found it on a shelf. I'm definitely going to tell my buddy to pick me up another bottle next time he's in New York (where he is from and where he found this one). Looked for that today based on your rec at the place with the best selection to distance tradeoff for my ride home from the office. No joy. Ended up punting on anything new and made a couple Basil Hayden Manhattans, plus a bottle of Bordeaux, and for some reason, a Bacardi & Coke. I guess because I noticed recently I had two open 5ths of Barcardi, which I only keep for tailgate mixers. I've got a tingle in my toes. Going to pour a very large water next.
