I mean is Sanchez really all that broken? He's only 30. Maybe with the right motivation he can get it back.

Maybe. However, like Consigliere said, that's a huge gamble with his salaries attached. There's a limited market (even if United retained some of the salary) of clubs who could actually afford them, and the clubs that can pay Sanchez salaries probably don't want to gamble on him finding form/motivation again, and have less risky options to sign.

Zidane's comments suggesting Bale is close to leaving Real Madrid are strange, as there are very few teams out there with the financial power to take him on. In Europe, unless he was willing to take a massive pay cut, I wonder if there are any clubs at all that could pay a transfer fee and his wages.

Similar story. While Bale is not damaged goods the same way Sanchez and Özil are, the wages are a big deterrent. And sunny Spain is simply a nicer location to live than most alternatives. Real has tried a few times to link Bale to Bayern, which Bayern have vehemently denied.

The Bale story seems to be mostly pushed by Marca - they're usually fairly reliable but are also Real Madrid's spin doctors. There's also been reports that the Chinese club want Bale on a free transfer - makes some sense as his wages would be astronomical + Chinese clubs have that 100% tax on foreign players.

Bale by all accounts never settled in Spain, doesn’t really speak Spanish, doesn’t socialise with the other players. He’s been a bit of a nob,  from people I know in the industry.

Yeah, it's arguably still better lieing on some sunny beach in Spain with other nobs, than on some wet meadow in Wales with sheep. :smug:

Think he just plays golf all day. Every day. I'm sure he'd prefer to come home and not have to eat any more of that 'forrin food'

Wouldn't mind more rumours about Everon atm.

There seems to be a major cleaning up going on - Jags, Williams, Vlasic, all gone, plus soon Lookman (sadly) and Gueye (also sadly, but perhaps inevitable), perhaps McCarthy, Besic, hopefully Bolasie, Martina.

Perhaps the Zouma saga is over, and we can move on to other targets, that would be nice. Also nice to get rid of some deadwood, hopefully we can see more of that. But all of that sort of points to another season of transition.

There is indeed a lot of deadwood in the Everton squad.

It’s been a poor preseason for Liverpool so far, as expected.  Too many senior players either still on break (Salah, Firmino, Alisson, Mane) or injured (Shaqiri, Keita).  So we’ve been playing preseason games with half the team made up of kids.  On top of that, the games in the US coincided with a massive heatwave, and then Sevilla pulled some real bullshit with a bunch of dirty, cynical tackles in a friendly (there should have been three red cards instead of just one).

I know I sound like a broken record but the team won’t actually be fit and ready to start the season.  The first couple of weeks, including the Charity Shield and European Super Cup, are going to be a write-off, and there’s a serious danger that our front three have a slow start to the season just like they did last year.

That Sevilla game was nasty. One of your youth players (can't recall his name) was lucky to escape serious injury - it looked bad when he was being stretchered off). The ref was shit too and lost control of a preseason friendly. A similar thing happened to us against Inter, although not quite as bad. The Inter players just decided they were going to start hacking down players and the ref was happy to let things go.

There's a sudden burst of chatter about us signing Milinkovic-Savic today, based on a report by La Repubblica that we've agreed a fee. No idea how reliable they are, though.

Yeah, I'm skeptical as hell. Remember Bruno Fernandes? A United bid has been "imminent" for about a month now. Our transfer window has been shit.

Klopp has known about much of this for a long time though, and still he hasn't done anything. There's a really chance the season will end up as a write-off because of our unwillingness to strengthen.

If we start slowly and City manage to get 10 points clear...

We've underwhelmed on the back of good years before, I just hope we don't again.

It really doesn’t make sense to me that we haven’t gone after fullback and attacking depth. Most desirable the club has been in maybe decades. Feels a wasted opportunity.

Do have high hopes for Brewster though.

I think at least part of the problem is the grossly inflated transfer market. Nicolas Pepe for instance would have been great as the versatile forward that Liverpool have been looking for but apparently Lille want around €80m for him. That fee could be justified if he was to be signed as a starter but that's an awful lot to spend on rotation. There were links to Bruno Fernandes as well but it's the same issue - Sporting want around €70m. Players like Firpo or Tierney would be great options at LB but Robertson is undisputed first choice and he isn't injury prone either so their game time would be minimal - Tierney might be worth pursuing because the fee is quite reasonable but €60m for Firpo is too much for a backup player who wouldn't see that much game time.

ETA.

So because we won something we should be blindly optimistic and ignore any obvious areas of weakness within the squad? How many year does that have to last?

I reckon you might have the best manager in the world. I think he knows what he is doing.
