Some people have decided that since Trump is a threat to liberal democracy, we need to jettison liberal democracy and have a violent revolution... to preserve liberal democracy.

tbf, i’m skeptical of the assumption those advocating violent revolution are looking to preserve ‘liberal democracy’

Awww I didn't know that. That's awesome.

(Really, not being sarcastic, that's awesome)

Yeah, it's kind of adorable. Back when the boarders met more and the people largely actually knew each other IRL. Went to my first con in Scotland and met her there, and the next year we were dating. A year after that we were married and it's been 12 years and two kids. I know there are a lot of couples who met via these crazy things. Most of em don't post any more.

This country isn’t a democracy lol and it’s checks and balances / institutions aren’t working to stop a corrupt and fascist individual and the party backing him. In fact, that system seems to be protecting them and stacked in their favor.

Oh...it’s you

makes two of us.  comments sections in the political articles, Trump fans/conservatives are a consistent 30% of those posting, give or take a few percentage points.  30%.  Not quite a third of the electorate.   Yes, their numbers are in decline...but that's tens of millions of mostly older people, parents, grandparents, skilled technical types, small businessfolk, teachers, law enforcement, civil servants...list goes on and on.  Even should the violent revolution win (it won't), what then?  Mass executions.  Re-education camps? At what point do the lines blur?

I don’t think most of them have much of an idea what to fight for, just against. Historically those kinds of movements work out just...fine?

As RRL said, I'm not sure they're trying to preserve liberal democracy.  Or if they are, they're crazier than this Aerosmith song I'm listening to.  Radical elements have their role to play though, particularly during revolutionary times.  So, I think there's that to consider.  Like, how all the communists died first against the Nazis.

I guess my first question here what do you mean when you say "liberal democracy" cause the way I see by most definitions liberal democracy is the problem. It's what got us here.

Well, it definitely is what got us here.  But as for it being the "problem," my lord no.  I'm not the greatest Churchill fan, but:

Quote

Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.

Unless you're under the impression that liberal democracy is the only democracy, I've got no idea what the fuck your point is.

I'm under the impression you're whining about nothing.  Conceptually, what are your issues with "liberal" democracy.

You know what. Fuck it, after this and the shit you pulled in the workable socialism threat being all "confused" why I was offended at being accused of being okay with my ancestors genocide I'm not giving you the benefit of the doubt here and engaging with you like you're actually open to having an honest conversation.

@Darzin I would very much like to know what you mean when you say liberal democracy. I'm assuming you mean classical or neoliberalism, but this is a heavily US leaning board.

Ya know the Ghandhi being racist thing gets to me.  I didn't really have many idols growing up.  I liked Emerson and Thoreau but it's not like they actually did much.  Was Ghandhi kinda racist - not to mention a huge dick in many other ways?  You bet.  But he was one of the two I actually admired.  Other one was Malcolm X.  Wonder what critics have to say about the very significant period when he was very racist?

You can't sell liberal democracy.

Sure you can, it goes for vague promises of one hotel in Moscow.

Meanwhile I accidentally reminded myself of Al Franken by invoking purity tests. And now I'm so angry at liberals I can't even masturbate to this oil painting of Lyndon B. Johnson and FDR spitroasting a satisfied-as-a-clam looking Harry Truman that I commissioned.

There's 200 grand down the drain.

Eh, Trump’s campaign slogan was a complaint that America needs work, and now he’s lashing out at four minority women for saying America needs work, and he did so by telling them to go back to their countries that need work, which is America. Unwrap that mind(bleep) bruh.

It was a reference to West Wing, when Bartlet says "you can't sell science" to "Al Kiefer," their pollster that's representative of Dick Morris.

My Aaron Sorkin experience is mostly limited to about four episodes of the unbearably pretentious The Newsroom.
