very possible.  lots of idiots on the water doing things they shouldn't - and they pay substantial fines when caught.

the idea that a country with 4.4% of the world’s population but uses up 20 or 25% of the world’s output got to that position by being a patsy on trade is just wrong.

yes, his position is unwarranted, when considering both the texts of international conventions on commerce and US circumvention thereof with bilateral trade agreements.  his thesis is further undermined, as you suggest, by the US running substantial balance of payments deficits continuously.  it's more than seigniorage; michael hudson describes it as 'superimperialism,' the process of central bank hierarchization.  it's all standard as part of US postwar planning, such as in kennan's 1948 memorandum PPS/23, which your percentages, supra, recall, to wit:

Quote

we have about 50% of the world’s wealth but only 6.3% of its population. This disparity is particularly great as between ourselves and the peoples of Asia. In this situation, we cannot fail to be the object of envy and resentment. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which will permit us to maintain this position of disparity without positive detriment to our national security. To do so, we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming; and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives. We need not deceive ourselves that we can afford today the luxury of altruism and world-benefaction.

Everything I needed to know about stopping for protesters blocking the road I learned from Reginald Denny.

I will never ever ever stop my car for protesters blocking the road. If protesters are blocking the road, a driver should assume that they want to do him harm, and should defend themselves accordingly. Slow down, give the protesters a chance to clear out of the way and drive slowly through, just as this truck did. The protesters mom's should have taught them not to play in traffic.

“Give me your rich and powerful, and preferably white, masses huddled in first class waiting to be free”

It says something about  Cuccinelli when he argues this policy isn’t prejudiced because it’s been around for 140 years while at the same time  wax poetically that his grandfather was an immigrant.

This policy was exactly for those like Cuccinelli’s grandfather. Back then it was the “ savage”Irish, and ”Dagos” that needed to be stopped from coming here. Now it’s Mexicans and Latin Americans.

Yeah, 100%. My mother's family immigrated from Italy when she was just a couple of years old. They were ambiguously dark skinned people (there's a whole group of my cousins who would have been thrown right to the back of the bus in the old days) who came from the most backwater of backwaters in Italy, (we're talking an island of fishermen and goat herders where less than 300 people live year round) speaking no English, with no advanced skills that would win points in a merit based immigration system. They were seen as criminals and thugs, and the ones that weren't crooks were only good for blue collar labor, which only drove down the pay of "real Americans".

Knowing that there is a group of my cousins out in Long Island who love Trump and cheer him on as he persecutes dark skinned immigrants coming from backwater areas because they don't speak English and have no advanced skills, talking about how "those people" bring crime and drive down wages, and that they see absolutely no conflict there, infuriates me to no end.

As a Wisconsinite, born and raised an hour west of Green Bay and sitting at my computer right now half an hour west of Madison, I can tell you flat out that is not true.  I frequently eat high end cheese and drink quality beer.  And know many people from this state that do as well.   I'm sitting right now within a hour driving distance of at least a dozen world class cheese makers and 5 or 6 top flight breweries.  You can say a lot of bad things about this state, but we know our beer and our cheese as well or better than anyone in the world.  Yeah, a lot of people here drink shitty beer and eat crappy cheese.  That's mostly because its cheaper.  We know what's good. We make what's good. We consume a lot of what's good.

Your state created Red Dog, the worst beer ever. That alone speaks for itself.

And the Packers suck!

And another one bites the dust.

Former Colorado Gov. Hickenlooper to Drop Out of Democratic Presidential Race

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/08/hickenlooper-drop-out-democratic-presidential-race-colorado-senate.html

Quote

Not being on the debate stage didn’t give Hickenlooper much of a path to anything really and as he bows out of this race the Democratic leadership hopes he will jump into another one. The Colorado Senate seat currently occupied by Republican Cory Gardner is up in 2020, and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has been pressing Hickenlooper to use his centrist powers where they might do the most good—in politically purple Colorado. “Recent polls showed Mr. Hickenlooper with a more than 50-point lead over the current leading Democrats in the race for party’s nomination for the Senate seat,” according to the New York Times. “They also showed him ahead of Mr. Gardner by 13 percentage points in a head-to-head matchup.”

Israel Said to Deny Entry to Omar and Tlaib After Trump’s Call to Block Them

JERUSALEM — Israel on Thursday barred the entry of two American Democratic congresswomen who had planned to visit the West Bank, the deputy foreign minister on Israeli radio said, hours after President Trump had urged the country to ban them.

Mr. Trump’s intervention was an extraordinary step to influence an allied nation and punish his political opponents at home.

It was reported last week that Mr. Trump was pressing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel to deny entrance to the two women, Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, and Thursday morning he left little doubt. He said in a Twitter post while Israeli officials were still deliberating the matter that “it would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep. Tlaib to visit.” ....

Yet, tvillain has no problem with China mainland going after the protesters in Hong Kong.  So like him.

Yes, I’m sure you’re mad at the civil rights protesters who when often marching against 60s to protest Jim Crow blocked traffic. Why couldn’t good white people be just allowed to mow these protesters  down with their car and continue onto to their destination. Minor acts of civil disobedience with no immediate threat of violence should literally mean its permissible for other actors on the road slightly inconvenienced to kill/managle your body.

Of course you’d justify this. Way to threaten to run over people. And it’s pathetic you can’t differentiate between a protest and a riot.

Guess youre one of those that has wet dreams of killing protestors that “inconvenience” you. Your post is extremely threatening.

Oh and guess what, they were in a parking lot, not in traffic. Get a clue. Learn how not to drive into people with a car.

The Next Jimmy Aldaoud
The Michigan man who died after being deported to Iraq—a country he’d never been to—was not an anomaly.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/08/deporations-ice-chaldeans-iraqis-recalcitrant-countries.html

Quote

But that wasn’t enough for Chaffetz. With tepid support from then–Democratic ranking member Elijah Cummings, he demanded more concrete action.

“You are so worried about playing nice instead of implementing the law,” he scolded. “These people are committing more crimes … get them out.”

Four months later, Donald Trump was elected president of the United States. And less than three months after that—a week after his inauguration—his administration proved that it wasn’t worried about playing nice by issuing an executive order barring nationals from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.

In early June, agents deported Jimmy Aldaoud, and two months later, he was dead.
Though the ban had an obvious primary goal—keeping Muslims out of the country—an ancillary effect was a step toward achieving Chaffetz’s vision. Among the seven sanctioned countries was recalcitrant Iraq, and soon after the order’s signing, the Trump administration gave Baghdad an ultimatum: We’ll take you off the travel-ban list if you start taking back your deportable nationals. According to comments from State Department officials at the time, Iraq agreed to that deal, and in March 2017, after a federal court struck down Trump’s original Muslim ban, he issued a new one, this time sans Iraq. Then, in April, ICE successfully removed an initial flight of eight Iraqis, and in June, agents staged mass raids in an attempt to make a dent in the list of roughly 1,400 more U.S. residents eligible for deportation to Iraq.

Because of a legal battle with the American Civil Liberties Union, ICE only became free to take action against those 1,400 Iraqis in April of this year. In early June, agents deported Jimmy Aldaoud, and two months later, he was dead.

Here's a funny article by ex-Republican Never Trumper Tom Nichols. Hopefully more and more people feel this way over the next 15 months:

Quote

I don’t care if Sen. Elizabeth Warren is a mendacious Massachusetts liberal. She could tell me that she’s going to make me wear waffles as underpants and I’ll vote for her. I don’t care if Sen. Kamala Harris is an opportunistic California prosecutor who wants to relitigate busing. She could tell me that I have to drive to work in a go-cart covered with Barbie decals and I’ll vote for her. I don’t care if Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is a muddle-headed socialist from a rural class-warfare state (where I once lived as one of his constituents). He could tell me he’s going to tax used kitty litter and I’ll vote for him.

I don’t care if Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard is clearly influenced by a hostile foreign government or that Marianne Williamson is a weird, anti-science guru. They could …

Wait. I do care about that. It’s the reason they won’t get my vote next year, and why the president won’t either.

Wow dude.  Really.  You're bringing Denny up now?  I always thought of you as a benign conservative that I could talk to.  But no, randomly bringing up Denny for no fucking reason other than, I dunno, maybe so you can let yourself sleep at night while holding such positions?  Yeah, that's a piece of shit move.

Nichols is a frustrating and an especially annoying twitter presence, he's been trying to moderate the Dems for the last couple years and says he'll do anything to stop Trump but it's all bullshit.  It's frustrating to hear a privileged uppercruster asshole who would gladly put Mitt Romney in the WH (or Biden) wax philosophical and suddenly become a voice of reason.  But strange times make strange bedfellows, or whatever, so I'll take naked weirded out Tom Nichols in my bed if he'll stop taking shots at the left while proclaiming 'never Trump'.

Dude is a straight up douche and I feel like he's hijacked all of those jokes from somewhere, his schtick is basically being the super preachy guy that we're supposed to listen to because he prefers Romney to Trump.
