Football: A New Hope

Chelsea are playing with a stronger team than the weekend and Liverpool are playing with a slightly weaker one.  Even so, it’s a concern that we lack cohesion again in defense and midfield.  We conceded a lot in pre-season even when we had our starting defenders.

I guess it’s good that we make these mistakes here in this inconsequential game and hopefully improve on them quickly.

Deserved lead for Chelsea. They are pressing very well in midfield and playing with a lot of intensity - it's not too often that Liverpool's midfield is made to look this ineffective. Will be interesting to see whether Chelsea can maintain this level of intensity. Pedro has been excellent as well.

Gomez gets left for dead for Chelsea's offside second.

Pulisic is pretty clearly offside. Having played him offside Gomez basically stops because he's so offside and then belatedly decides he better track back just in case it isn't given. 'Gets left for dead' is just about the most uncharitable way you could describe what's a fairly straightforward offside on the halfway line. He's been fine defensively.

The problem is how much we're getting overrun in midfield.

Should have just gone straight to penalties.

That’s my reaction.  Why on earth have extra time for this?  Both teams will be exhausted for their weekend games.
