Agreed. Think this is exactly the sweet spot. Season 3 it was good but still too conventional a lot of the time (although Homer at the Bat is utterly fantastic). Season 9 it went too far the other way and lost all mooring in being even passingly realistic - the two Skinners episode? FFS

Fortunately, they surely must have righted the ship in the *checks calendar* 21 years since....

It always blows my mind that the show is as old as I am, and that despite it being one of my all-time favorite shows, I haven’t seen at least half of it (not including the Halloween specials).

I watched the Kamp Krusty episode last night, and it’s hilarious as ever. Watching random episodes as an adult is such a joy because I finally get all the references that went over my head as a kid.

Also, FYI, all the episodes are free on demand if you have Xfinity.

Futurama.  In- a- gadda- da- Leela (the most elaborate attempt to get into anyone's pants, ever);  Holiday Spectacular;  the Day the Earth Stood Stupid.   (also the one when they traveled the whole timeline after Fry is really late for his date with Leela.)  (Also other ones.)

To reference Futurama without citing Jurassic Bark is offensive and gross and disgusting and awful and terrible and a nuclear holocaust on our collective souls. And nothing less.

I agree with Seinfeld - The Marine Biologist

Also I put forward The Office - Dinner Party. So funny, so awkward, it's a brilliant episode of television and the ultimate "if you like this one you'll like the whole series" episode.

Most of the ones mentioned here, great episodes!!!

Taxi -

"What does a yellow light mean?"

"Slow down!"

"Whhhhhhhhat doesssssss aaaaaa yellllllllowwwwww lighttttttt meannnnnnn?"

Great pick. Reverend Jim's driving test is for my money the funniest scene ever filmed.

"Mental illness or narcotic addiction?"

"That's a tough choice."

Those god darn millennials (?) , ruining comedy. /s

Ha! Obviously this is a funny tongue-in-cheek comment, but I actually read an interesting article in The Guardian like two days ago about the “Millennial” sense of humor and it’s affect on today’s comedy ;)

What really sucks is that a lot of these episodes couldn't get made now. People can't handle the humor anymore.

 i guess my only surprise is that this comment took so long to be made tbh

No, no, no, that wasn't meant as a "get off my lawn" old man comment. More about what can and can't be made fun of anymore.

Was Brooke Shields' sitcom the turning point?      (In the history of comedy, as the show that got on the air and was a huge WTF and then it stayed on the air and maybe paved the way for more 'comedy' like it?)

(will Saved By The Bell be referenced by historians 300 years from now as the thing that defines our era?)

Very fun thread.  Lots of best eps of lots of my favorite shows have already been mentioned, so I'll just list some episodes that I don't think have been mentioned yet:

South Park:  Gnomes, Butters' Very Own Episode, Asspen, Awesom-O, Ginger Kids, Trapped in the Closet, The List ("I don't that sparkled with her."), You're Getting Old/Ass Burgers, Bass to Mouth.

Simpsons:  Most I can think of have been mentioned (and skimming episode titles on Wiki isn't particularly helpful reminding me), but first - Homer's Enemy - i.e. Frank Grimes!  Also, Flaming Moe's.  Oh, and the one with "Go back to Russia!" and the Mr. Burns/pigs fly bit.  You don't win friends with salad!  Funny Mr. Plow hasn't been mentioned, makes me think of this from Family Guy:

Family Guy:  Death Is a Bitch, Petarded, Chick Cancer, Road to the Multiverse, And Then There Were Fewer, Brian & Stewie, Thanksgiving, Farmer Guy.

Archer:  Skytanic, Swiss Miss, The Double Douce, Heart of Archness (3), Once Bitten, Southbound and Down, Double Indecency.

Seinfeld:  The Apartment, The Deal, The Parking Garage, The Parking Space, The Virgin, The Junior Mint, The Dinner Party, The Hamptons, The Soup Nazi (!).  Also, I really don't like the Chinese Restaurant one, boring as hell, vastly overrated, always change the channel when it's on.

Friends:  The One with the Hypnosis Tape, The One with the Free Porn, The One with All the Wedding Dresses, The One with Rachel's Assistant.

Office:  The Carpet, Secret Santa, China.  Also, as has been mentioned, The Injury is unquestionably my favorite because of concussion-Dwight and Pam.

Arrested Development:  Key Decisions, Pier Pressure, Not Without My Daughter, Switch Hitter, Spring Breakout, Mr. F, S.O.B.s.

Parks and Rec:  Flu Season, Andy and April's Fancy Party, Jerry's Painting, The Fight, Sweet Sixteen ("Genuine is..Genuine").

Always Sunny:  Charlie Has Cancer, Dennis and Dee Go on Welfare, The Gang Gets Held Hostage, Mac is a Serial Killer, Mac and Charlie Die (2), The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention.

There's a few more shows but I'm tired of going through episode lists on Wikipedia.  30 Rock had some great ones, but I can't think of any of them off the top of my head.  I'll echo others that the second paintball episode(s) of Community is some of the most genius comedy I've ever seen.  There's another episode of Community that's premise seems to have been derived from a stoned savant, but I can't remember right now (perhaps appropriately).

Finally, gotta give a shout out to Futurama - the dog episode is one of the most touching 23 minutes of television I've ever seen, I always tear up.  The time travel one where they keep going forward is also great.  Oh and yeah, the original series finale which brilliantly made an entire romantic comedy out of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" is equally hilarious and heartwarming like the dog episode.  That show had a unique mix of comedy and heart that I don't think any other "adult" cartoon show ever has even been close to matching - most just stick to the social satire plus one-liner/off-color jokes formula.  And then there's the one where Farnsworth tells Fry - "Ooh, a lesson in not changing history from 'Mr. I'm-my-own-grandpa.'"

Oh, shit, P.S. ya know what show I think this thread may have completely forgot?  That 70s Show.  The episode where Red and Kitty get high off Hyde's brownies is definitely one of the funniest sitcom eps ever.

How did Millenial comedy get so surreal?

If its this then well I don't know if I agree with. The article talks about Adult Swim, which is possibly my favourite channel and mentions some of my absolute best comedies (I love Tim and Eric).. but is it really all that representative of millenial humour?

What a bullshit article - I agree entirely that it's weird that the writer is trying to link millennial humor through the shows mentioned.  I've watched and enjoyed Broad City and Rick & Morty - two of the shows mentioned before I gave up reading after about the 4th graph - and they couldn't be any more different comedies.  Let's take another newish one like Another Period on Comedy Central, which I enjoy.  Those three comedies are as different from each other as any of the ten comedies I just listed (at least), you could pick em out of a hat.

The only difference with "millennial" comedy is it's becoming harder to be funny because everything's already been done (Simpsons did it!).  Comedy, particularly via social commentary, certainly isn't finite, but it's the same reason I had such a hard time building a quality dissertation - a lot of what I wanted to say has already been said.

Has anybody mentioned the Friends episode where Rachel and Monica murder that homeless guy and Joey ends up in Deathrow?

I'm guessing this is nowhere near a real thing, but in the off chance it is... might be time to watch Friends for the first time in 10 years...

Great list, @DMC

Lots of great Simpsons episodes, but I wanted to bring up two that haven't been mentioned.

A Fish Called Selma, because it's the best Phil Hartman episode of the show, featuring Troy McClure attempting to hide his sexual past by marrying Selma.

Legs:  Troy McClure?  I thought you said he was dead.

Fat Tony:  No, I said he sleeps with the fishes.

Treehouse of Horror IV, which I still insist is the best Halloween episode of all.  Feature Homer selling his soul for a doughnut and Mr's Burns is a vampire.

LISA:  You must drive this stake right through his heart.

HOMER: Take that, vile fiend!

LISA: Uh, Dad, that's his crotch.

On non Simpsons topics, I'd nominate Brooklyn 99's Yippie Kayak, featuring the best line of the show, "Yippie kayak, other buckets!"

Bob's Burgers - Glued, where's my Bob?, featuring Bob glued to a toilet seat, and Bob and Louise's duet about how she did absolutely nothing wrong.

This might be low key my favorite Simpsons episode. Top 5 definitely. Always forget about it. And it's season 8 so think in retrospect I was too harsh on that season. The show was still capable of some awesome highs (it just started also having some lows mixed in for the first time).

Grimes: Oh, that's my degree in nuclear physics. I'm sure you all have one.

Lenny: Oh yeah, Carl and I each have a masters. Of course, old Homer, he didn't need a degree. He just showed up the day they opened the plant.

Homer: I didn't even know what a nuclear panner plant was.
