What was Rickard Karstark thinking?

When Rickard Karstark promised the hand of his daughter Alys to anyone who caught Jaime Lannister, Vargo Hoat, a sadistic rapist who likes to chop off limbs, tried to cash in and become Lord of Karhold. Did Rickard honestly want to throw his daughter to someone like that?

Rickard was running on emotions.  He wasn't thinking clearly.  I can accuse Robb, Catelyn, and Jon of the same poor decisions.  Stress levels were high and they couldn't keep it together.

Lord Rickard really lost it towards the end because of his personal loss. Why would he otherwise murder children? That's even a bigger problem here.

War kills children all the time.  And those Lannister boys.  Those boys are not exactly innocent.  They are part of the enemy's war effort against them.  Those boys are in-training to become enemy soldiers.  Cadets is what they were.  Killing them is hardly different from killing the knights they were serving.  Those boys are less innocent than the Lannister camp cooks.  At least the cooks are not directly in support of the fighting men.  The squires are in direct support of the fighting men.  Their service help those men kill the enemy.  They are not innocent.  Multiply the deaths of these two lads by 10K and you might reach the number of truly innocent children who died because Robb Stark chose to defy the king.

If they are not viewed as children, then they were prisoners of war. So it's murder either way. Lord Rickard was a murderer; no matter if those were kids or adults. If they were guilty of something, then they would've been put on trial, yet, they were not, they were prisoners and valuable ones. Potentially exchanging of prisoners can lead to peace, or at least a truce.

His lust for revenge outweighed everything else. With his heir a hostage and Jamie slaying his other boys during the battle of the WW he pretty much went psycho. His murder of the squires proves it. He wanted Lannister blood at any cost, and I bet he would have fought till the end with Robb even if he realized all was lost just to get a chance to spill some lion blood. In his mind a daughter was a small price to pay for Jamie.

Would he have actually honored the offer he made? That's not so clear. Regardless, there is a whole other branch of Karstarks so I can imagine there would be some backroom deals. Let the lowborn lad marry Alys and maybe he even becomes Lord of Karhold. However his council would be all true Karstarks and his children would be married to Rickard's nieces and nephews. As well, the lowborn man would probably take the Karstark name rather than give Alys his own. Of-course if this theoretical lowborn guy who won Alys is stupid and brazen he might insist on ruling in his own name in which case he probably has an accident and Alys marries a distant relative instead.
