Why did Hoster Tully support the rebellion ?

Hoster was trying to broker a power block between realms adjacent to his own in order to counter-balance the hegemony of the Reach, Dorne and the Iron Throne. Aerys saw through this plan and, after Duskendale, sought to stamp out any potential rival to his power.

Why Hoster would decide to do this considering the Tully's have long been Targ loyalists is anybody's guess. Hoster's two eldest sons died either just before Aerys succeeded Jaehaerys or early in his reign, so maybe he suspected Aerys of having something to do with that? Or maybe there was bad blood between them during the ninepenny war. Or maybe he saw an increasingly unstable king on the throne and decided he needed to shore up his defensive posture.

He didn't have any ties with the Targs, thanks Jaeharys 2, and Aerys had done things that would've alienated any sane man, the real question here is why the Non Stannis lords helped Aerys, so when Ned and Jon went there the call seemed easy.

Plenty of reasons!

  1. Brandon Stark had been engaged to Catelyn. When Aerys executed him in a mock of a trial, he was offending the Tullys a little bit too.
  2. One of the companions of Brandon was Jeffory Mallister. He and his father were also executed by Aerys. House Mallister is a bannermen of the Tullys, and Hoster couldn't allow the random murders of his subjects on absurd charges.
  3. If Lyanna was in the Riverlands when Rhaegar took her away, that was an insult to Hoster's authority too.
  4. Aerys was mad as nuts, and he had to go. He killed Brandon because he shouted "come out and die". Okay. Then also murdered the friends that went with him. And the parents of the friends that went with him. And then asked for the heads of Brandon's brother, and Lyana's bethroted. Hoster had no way to know that Aerys would stop here. It may have easily come the time when it was decided that the father of Brandon's bethroted had to go too.
  5. In 240, when Hoster's was 3, Aerys' father insulted House Tully by breaking his engagement with Celia Tully (probably Hoster's aunt). He may not have forgotten this.
  6. Hoster knew that Cersei Lannister lived at court and was a candidate for Rhaegar's hand. At the end, Elia Martell was the chosen one. Catelyn Tully, in yet another scorn to House Tully, wasn't even considered.
  7. Given the geographical location of the Riverlands, Hoster's safest bet would be to join the rebels. If he had joined the loyalist side, the first thing that the armies of the North and the Vale would do would be to descend on the Riverlands, since it's their only path to the capital. And since Aerys didn't move from the Red Keep and Rhaegar was nowhere to be found, he would have had to face both armies alone.
  8. Last but not least, Hoster didn't offer his support freely. He negotiated great marriages for Catelyn and Lysa (specially difficult in the case of the later).

To add to this, we don't know that Aerys asked for Hoster's help. Once Robert was retreating into the Riverlands, we know that Aerys asked his new Hand, Jon Con, to pursue Robert instead of Hoster, LP of the Riverlands. Could be an insult to Hoster in that Hoster should be the one to enforce the law in his own domain.

Also, we know that Jon Arryn and Ned met with Hoster and negotiated, before marching across the Riverlands to look/rescue Robert. They acted in good faith.
