Episode 4 makes the new season feel like some weakass soft porn :( it's disappointing so far.

Yeah it's getting silly. Every second character has their own sex subplot and its drowning out the rest of the show.

I really enjoy Pope John Paul III. A cold, detached Pope who thinks passion is the enemy of the Church because of his messed up childhood, whose insecurities and feelings of inadequacy make him desperate to stamp his authority on the Papacy. I wish they spent more time on him and his development, like they did with Lenny in the Young Pope. Not bloody Esther having to fuck that deformed guy to pay her rent.

:agree: When will these HBO series learn that there are specialized channels nowadays where you can watch a never-ending succession of naked ladies (or men, or whatever). If a sex scene doesn't add anything to the story it has to go. Our time is too precious to waste on random titillation

Episode 5 has a quote which sums up the difference between season 1 & 2:

"The papacy creates symbols [Season 1], the vulgar act of explanation is left to others [Season 2]."

I'm 3/4 into episode 5 and I'm seriously considering dumping the entire show. It's just so damn bland. At this point, I don't even know whether I want Jude Law to come back. As long as he remains sidelined, I can still pretend this train wreck never happened.

EDIT: The last quarter is better than what we saw earlier. Luckily enough. I'll stick around for a bit longer, but jeez, most of the episode is a waste of time.

I figured it would be, considering how often second seasons of what should be single season miniseries so often are.  You certainly haven't given me any encouragement to engage with the second season!  Which is quite different from the first season, which encouraged me to watch that, and I was glad I did.

I can't say I disagree with the general theme here... S2 is already shaping up to be a parody of S1..... they wasted no time by dipping back into the "I'm sexy and I know it" well in the first episode...  Here's the soundtrack... just yuck

And while I'm all for shitting all over the church wherever, and whenever... this seasoned lacks the cleverness of the first, and just comes across as hackneyed

I'm foolishly hoping that it is still going to surprise me in the second half. I'll be watching the second episode tonight or tomorrow to see :) I just wish there was more good tv out there. You'd think that we'd have cracked the code by now :'(

They used the D&D approach of going for the lowest common denominator every time, all the time. It reminds me of La Grande Belezza which I thought was mostly style over substance.

Episode 6 was another snoozefest unfortunately. DIdn't like it at all, especially the damn fucking subplots which are completely nuts and that in the most boring way possible.

  • 2 weeks later...

I finished the season and I have become convinced that the major problem of this season is Malkovich's character. He's a great actor, but John Brannox is such a pitiful and pompous ass of a character. He drowns in his own self-importance and the series just treats him like everything that comes out of his mouth is profound wisdom instead of dealing with him as a particularly unfunny jester.

It's really noticeable in episode 9. He's out of focus in episode 8, which is by far the best episode of the season and then in episode 9 he's back and the series just immediately starts lagging again in all the scenes that are focused on him. Really awful. I'd give everyone the advice to only watch episodes 1, 7, 8 & 9. Skip 2-6, they are a total waste of time.

In general, I'd say that it would be best to skip the entire series. If you're a big fan of The Young Pope, it's probably better to preserve a pristine image of that series instead of destroying your happy memories. The only scenes I would really recommend (and major spoilers, so beware of clicking on the spoilertags

Spoiler

1. The opening credits of the first episode and episode 8. They rif on both throughout the entire series so the  other opening credits are also nice

2. The scenes of Jude Law with his doctor and his doctor's spouse

3. The speech of Jude Law to the cardinals in full papal regalia (fist-pump moment in the last episode. Why couldn't the series have more of that)

4. Giralomo's funeral and Voiello's speech

All the rest is pretty shitty.

Pardon my ignorance, but how are some of y'all so many episodes ahead?

They have been airing 2 at a time in the International (non-US, non-HBO) market(s?).  I've just stayed patient myself waiting for the US HBO versions, because those have subtitles (for the Italian parts) and because we can watch them in better quality.

Canal+ also has them with subtitles ;)

Where are you guys in the US at?

When I looked at what I could access it only showed Estonian subtitles (not much help for me, ;)) , so I probably did something wrong.

HBO will air episode 5 tonight though.

Finished it tonight, was overall very disappointed. Esther's plot in particular is one of the weirdest things I've ever watched and can't imagine why they decided to waste so much time on that.

Having said that, Lenny's final scene was very touching. When the show was earnest (like with that particular funeral in the latter half of the season) I enjoyed it, but too much of the season was wasted time. For a show called The New Pope they really wasted John Paul III.
