RIP, a sorry day.

(on the side discussion, is there a reason more than 3-4 of the dwarves need development?  Between Gandalf, Bilbo, Balin and Thorin you're fine for key characters to carry the story).

Fili and Kili, to an extent, if you want their deaths to be more impactful (the Jackson films really bungled this as well, though).

You also have at least some degree of “development” or at least noteworthiness for Bombur (the fat one) Fili and Kili (Thorin’s nephews), Dori (usually carries Bilbo). And i think Oin and Gloin? (Good at getting the fire started - its a while since i read it so don’t recall if it is these two).

Especially for a short children’s adventure book thats more than sufficient imo

Christopher Tolkien unfairly got a lot of flack over the years from fandom because he wanted to hold people adapting his father's work to a higher standard. He had a long life and he will be missed for his scholarly contributions to his father's Middle-Earth legendarium. As he rightly observed, JRR's work got swallowed up in spectacle, turning it into the antithesis of what it was....
