The BlackBear
For the first time in weeks I managed to buy noodles! We're still delivering pizza, so I'm going to have to keep going out if I want to get paid. Our 'contactless' delivery system is still fairly hands on, so I'm not quite sure how safe it is, short of me directly breathing near you, I'm handling all the boxes and the bags. Sophelia
I'm guessing everyone just got the text message from the government? I thought only Trump in the US could do that. Quite efficient really, though. Tells me to stay at home (do they know l'm a non essential person, or was that the generic message?).

I think that was a generic message, my dad is recovering from Cancer and got a different message to me.

mormont
Has everyone actually read the guidance on shielding, by the way? Let me quote. And this is seriously a trigger warning for people with vulnerable relatives, because the subtext of this bit of the guidance is scary as fuck but hugely significant. Quote "Individuals who have been given a prognosis of less than 6 months to live, and some others in special circumstances, could decide not to undertake shielding. This will be a deeply personal decision. We advise calling your specialist or GP to discuss this." It's not just me, right? This is saying that if you have a prognosis of less than 6 months to live, you aren't going to get treated anyway, so do what you will.

Though it could be "we don't want to stop you making the most of your remaining time - have as much fun as you like" or "it is your decision if you'd like to try euthanasia by coronavirus"

It might end up coming to that but I'm not sure that's what they're saying at this stage. I think it's more that they expect these isolation measures for the most vulnerable people to last longer than six months so they need to make the choice whether it's worth it to them to potentially not see their family in person again. I’m not sure I agree with your conclusion, they’re just acknowledging what a lot people must be thinking; if you’re a grandparent and you have reason to believe you won’t survive the lockdown, you may not want to spend your remaining days isolating away from your family. There’s no suggestion that having decided this will demote you in the ventilator queue.
BigFatCoward
my first thought was they were indirectly encouraging a lot of suicides.

Possibly. I'm not sure the shielding is intended to last that long, though. It might not even be possible. And frankly, the Italians were already taking these sorts of decisions a week or so ago. WRT small businesses, I spoke to my bank today about extending my overdraft facility, and what they would require as security. As the loan extensions are all guaranteed by the government, the banks are barred from taking any additional security.

DaveSumm
Not really important now, but why does Laura Kuenssberg get the first question at every press conference?

I assume it's more the BBC than Kuensberg, and them with having the biggest audience in the UK. If Gary Lineker was there for MOTD to fill the footballing void, he would get the first question. just my theory tho.
