HBO Ends Hold on Paint Hall Studio

Westeros

A friend in Belfast brought to our attention this breaking news from the Belfast Telegraph, revealing that HBO has served notice that it will no longer be holding on to its lease on the sprawling Paint Hall studio complex following the wrapping up of the “Long Night” prequel. ‘

More importantly, however, the article indicates that NI Screen was aware that the House of the Dragon prequel series was definitely or at least unlikely to be filmed in Northern Ireland, which is a shock to some but perhaps not to others:

What do you mean “not a shock”?

We suspect that the “other ways” was the sticking point, particularly if HBO is looking for deeper tax breaks and support than Northern Ireland is able to offer especially in these uncertain post-Brexit times.

Brexit?!  It’s because of no tax breaks after Brexit?!

....what if Northern Ireland wants to rejoin the EU by counter-seceding and rejoining Ireland?  ( as some have suggested)

There are people who have worked on the show who have long felt that HBO would go elsewhere if conditions changed. They were not shocked.

There's doubtless other issues related to Brexit, like visas and so on.

Nothing that will get sorted out in the span of a year or two.

I strongly suspect that they’re going to move to Troy Studios in Limerick, Ireland.

Based on these factors:

- They need a major studio with physical space at least equal to Titanic Studios (which narrows down the list considerably)

- They’ll probably want to keep the production hub, containing all the big interior sets, in Europe - to facilitate travel to the Mediterranean shooting locations they will retain (in Spain, Croatia, Italy).  The new hub being in a European Union country, while not essential, is a plus.

- Many of the other large studios in Europe are already filled to capacity

- They need a large green screen space, and Troy is completing construction on one of the largest in Europe

- There are reliable sightings of GoT location scouts in the Republic of Ireland; though they aren’t necessarily there for this franchise

- IF they go to  Ireland, there are only three large studios in the country:  Ardamore and Ashford are in County Wicklow, just south of Dublin, and Troy Studios in Limerick. — Ardamore and Ashford are both booked to capacity.  Troy, in contrast, just went through massive expansion...and is looking for contracts to fill it.  It was created in 2016 and is only right now working on its second project ( Apple TV+’s adaptation of Asimov’s Foundation series ).

- The FIRST project ever made by Troy Studios, back in early 2018, was George R. R. Martin’s Nightflyers - the one season TV adaptation by the SyFy Channel.   Behind the scenes negotiations on prequels began in 2016.  So perhaps making Nightflyers there was a test run, checking it out as a fallback in case they had to leave Belfast?

Well, this is my analysis, based on the clues and logical deduction.  By the same methods, I have also concluded that the Second Foundation is on Terminus itself:  a circle HAS NO “end”.
