Watch, Watched, Watching: A new thread was Justified

Finished Porco Rosso. Ending was a bit slighter than what I hoped for, but honestly, I rather enjoyed it and how much of a homage it was to wartime films (particularly felt Porco was more or less a pig pilot version of Bogart in Casablanca). These films really have beautiful scenery, and the dogfighting scenes were fun.

Next, I guess, is Princess Mononoke, but I think I re-watched it last year so I think I may skip it to see Spirited Away again (been a number of years since I last saw it).

The Outsider: Finished this one. It felt like it petered out a bit towards the end, as everything became clear (if some aspects were inscrutable) and it was no longer a mystery. Enjoyed the performances well enough (especially Mendelsohn and Eviro), but didn't feel like it ended as strongly as it began. Often the case with King though, IMO.

Watched the first episode of The Plot Against America, enjoyed it but not too much else to say. I do trust Simon, and I suspect he'll knock it out of the park.

Started first episode of S3 yesterday too. I realised how invested I was in the characters, was great to have them back. I never considered it a great show but it’s consistently enjoyable , maybe it is great

I think so. It’s not The Sopranos or The Wire or anything, but it’s firmly in that second tier of shows for me. Julia Garner and Laura Linney are as good as anyone on tv. This and Dark are probably my favorite Netflix series at the moment.

Watching You right now with my wife. It's pretty entertaining. Has small Dexter elements to it with the inner monologue. Joe even said in one of the first eps "Tonight's the night..." It's an easy watch. We'll cruise through it before watching Ozark S3.

Finished Narcos: Mexico Season 4. Not quite as compelling as the previous seasons, it still held up ok. Felix Gallardo lacked the charisma and outrageousness to be as compelling a character as Escobar or anyone in the Cali cartel storylines. His motives and moves were largely strategic and political and less the street violence and  brutality that was so prevalent in the earlier seasons. I eye rolled at his "genius" being applauded by his adversaries and negotiating participants. His "genius" felt more like we were being told to feel that way about him rather than feeling it organically through character development and story. Some of his moves in the latter half were pretty gutsy but seemed to rely a lot on chance and fortune in equal parts to calculated risks. As with all seasons of Narcos, I almost always question (practically after every episode) where the line between fact and fiction were drawn. I wish they had behind the scenes footage of what was fictionalized and what wasn't.

On to Ozarks though if Amazon Prime pulls the Americans before I finish it, I'll be pissed.

Enjoying the hell out of season 4 of Justified.  Just finished episode 8.  If I had been asked to write down what I remembered of the series before starting it, I think I probably would have left out everything having to do with this season, but I haven't watched it as often as the first 3 seasons.

Just finished Season 7 of Morse. I'll elaborate more on my misgivings in the Moody Murder Mysteries thread, but this was obnoxiously terrible television. Absolutely godawful to see so many plot holes in a series that started so wonderful.

Shoulda won the Oscar :smoking:

Not sure about that. I still need to see Parasite, Little Women and A Portrait of a Girl on Fire. And The Lighthouse is the movie that still haunts me most. Midsommar was dope too, it just took a second viewing for me to really like it.

I think a decade from now 2019 will be recognized as one of the best years in film ever.

Absolutely. My favorite year for films since 2007.

I just lazily typed "best movies 2019" into Google, and went to IMDB. If Doctor Sleep is the 173rd best film, it's a good year for movies.

Sadly 2020 will be dead, and I fear theaters may become relics of the past. My great-uncle was a co-owner of GC and later AMC, as well as holding a decent stake in Mann. I'm having a hard time seeing how any of them can stay open, especially if people are down to pay $19.99 to just own the movie right away. That's so much cheaper anyways. If I had to guess, I'd bet within 2 years all theaters are basically art house entities.

I want to say that I hate Little Women.  I hated the book.  I have hated each of the 3 film adaptations I have seen, the one w/Hepburn, the one with June Allyson and the one with Winona.  I expect to hate the new one when I watch it for free eventually.  Louisa May Alcott was no Jane Austin. That is all.

All excellent movies.

I thought I did OK on seeing movies this year but have only seen Parasite and Midsommer from this list.  I'm not super-excited to see Little Women but could see myself getting to it.  More anxious to see Portrait and Lighthouse.

Pour yourself a stiff drink and check out The Lighthouse.

And like my lobster!

Loved S3 of Ozark. The back half of the season was insane, with a couple really jaw dropping moments, but that pretty much goes without saying with this show. It was driving me crazy trying to figure out where I knew the actor that played Wendy’s brother from until I looked it up and saw he was the ex-nazi sheriff on Banshee. Now the long wait for S4...

That Edward Cullen boy can act his ass off. Opposite Willem Dafoe no less!

My ex-fiance and college GF dragged me to that piece of shit. I started laughing in the theater when his skin glittered in the sun.

She swore on the drive home that the books were much better.

Smart financial decision for that Hufflepuff, put it has taken a bit to be respected as an actor. He's actually pretty great, BTW. Water for Elephants is quite enjoyable. And one of my cousins looks exactly like him, albeit with a 70's porn stash. His mother hates it.

Only 3 episodes in this season but I absolutely love it so far. Tensions between Marty and Wendy have gripped me, love how things have escalated since season 1

Wendy’s brother is a brilliant addition, guy grabs hold of the screen in every scene.
