Regarding last night's debate and performance, 538 and Ipsos have released their results of their regular post-debate polling. Biden and Sanders both slightly increased after the debate in heads up vs. Trump (66.7 to 67.3 for Biden, 54.4 to 54.8 for Sanders) , but Biden gained fairly significantly in support (swaying 3.5% more while Sanders lost 2%).

creative idiocy in a fanatical religious sort of way?

https://www.patheos.com/blogs/progressivesecularhumanist/2020/03/pastor-claims-coronavirus-is-satanic-plot-to-bring-socialism-to-the-u-s/?utm_medium=social&utm_source=share_bar&utm_campaign=share_bar_facebook&fbclid=IwAR3Kx3TeZLWWlnm6K6lj3Vdcf_p_9eQ-Qmjq98pZDxGCoWvd3tJqaHGjRfA

Some highlights:

Speaking at a “Firehouse Prayer” meeting at his church in Cleveland, Tennessee, Thursday night, the conservative Christian pastor declared that “the COVID-19 virus is a demonic attempt to kill elderly Americans who won’t accept the Mark of the Beast so socialism can take over this nation” according to a report issued by Right Wing Watch.

....

While Perry is clearly a delusional idiot who is using the coronavirus to promote his own ridiculous conspiracy theory, he is not the only religious conservative making idiotic claims.

For example, in a disastrous public health move, the Greek Orthodox Church has issued an official statement declaring that the coronavirus is not transmitted via communion.

While Christian Prophet Cindy Jacobs declares that the coronavirus “will cease worldwide” because the virus is now “illegal” in the name of Jesus.

And more recently, Televangelist Kenneth Copeland claims he can cure coronavirus if his viewers touch his oily hand through their television set during his televised ministry.

President Trump told several governors on a Monday conference call that they are largely on their own in stocking up on gear such as respirators and ventilators to fight the novel coronavirus. “Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment—try getting it yourselves,” the president said. “We will be backing you, but try getting it yourselves. Point of sales, much better, much more direct if you can get it yourself.” The president’s remarks came amid growing fears of a national shortage of ventilators in hospitals as the coronavirus outbreak continues to worsen in the United States. Trump also asserted to the governors that “we’re going to get it remedied and hopefully very quickly,” however he did not elaborate on the claim.

The advice from the administration is...actually kind of good? Of course, it's advice that governors have been doing for weeks now, and he or his surrogates have been advocating against for weeks now, but yay for vague competence sometimes.

Not even faintly, not even.

There is no way to deal with this in any coherent effective way without coherent national planning and implementing and action.  He's utterly refusing to do any of it.  NOTHING at all.  he should be taken out for committing intentional murder -- not to mention for his countless other evil doings and crimes.

You didn't listen or watch or read the documents, did you?

Well, more records on the Dow! Biggest point drop on a day, just shy of 3,000 down, just shy of 13%.
It should probably viewed as only down 1,000, all it did was give back that crazy 2,000 points from Friday plus a 1,000.

’Just’, Lol!

Soon Trump is going to hate the stock market as much as he hates Democrats!

The debate was meaningless. Only wonks and junkies caught it. Everyone else was either freaking the fuck out or pretending nothing is wrong. Trump refusing to take any credibility for the situation is what everyone will remember. The debate will be an asterisk to the 3,000 point drop.

The NYT is reporting the Justice Department is about to move to drop the charges filed against Russian firms filed by Mueller.

I remember reading months ago that the lawyers for the defense were using the case to uncover the ways the US uncovered the Russian schemes.

Quote

WASHINGTON — The Justice Department moved on Monday to drop charges against two Russian shell companies accused of financing schemes to interfere in the 2016 election, saying that they were exploiting the case to gain access to delicate information that Russia could weaponize.

The companies, Concord Management and Concord Consulting, were charged in 2018 in an indictment secured by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, along with 13 Russians and another company, the Internet Research Agency. Prosecutors said they operated a sophisticated scheme to use social media to spread disinformation, exploit American social divisions and try to subvert the 2016 election.

Have been thinking a lot about this the last few days, and a comment in the virus thread about NY states response to the situation got me thinking about leadership and what it means.  Especially vision, the ability to see and assess a conflict, assess likely developments, and to do what's necessary to fix it, regardless of how unpopular or crazy the fixes may be.  Especially considering where the Dem primary is right now.

Have been hearing a lot of excuses lately for Biden's lousy record on so many things, which I have previously enumerated.  On our morning roundtable on North East public radio, the panel for the most part argued that Biden's bad stances on things in the past were either due to compromise or to getting things done.  Or not a bad thing but evidence that he can change.  Huh.

One problem with this approach, that this current outbreak situation is highlighting, is that sometimes there isn't a learning curve for leadership.  You have to make decisions in the moment, and live with the consequences.  You can't afford to be continually wrong, even if you eventually realize it and either lie about it or change your mind, or both.

Sanders, unlike Biden, has been on the right side of way more issues than Biden over the course of his career.  Out of the two of them, I'd trust him over Biden anytime.  Everytime.  I mean maybe he was wrong on the Brady bill votes, but if you want to give Biden a 'political realities,' pass on a vote, maybe consider that as a representative of VT, there may be some political consequences of voting for gun reform.

Anyway, it's awesome that Biden can learn from and has learned from past mistakes.  But if you're the President you don't always have the luxury of a second chance.  And I feel like Biden is a guy who has lived his life depending on the possibility of the second chance.

Is anyone suspicious of a Republican governor cancelling a Democratic primary?

In this case, not really. Mike DeWine has been one of the governors taking the virus the most seriously and has been aggressive in shutting down opportunities for transmission.

He also didn't cancel the primary, he closed the polls; and announced that they'd be taking steps to ensure everyone had access to a mail-in ballot.

Oddly, my Ohio friends with liberal leanings, while not generally liking DeWine, are praising his general handling of things in the state.  Meanwhile, people I know (really struggle to call them friends anymore for their political leanings), are howling for DeWine's head.  Wanting him primaried at the earliest opportunity...

Things are going to get reeeeeal interesting if Trump starts going along with the $1k to every American scenarios that started to get thrown around today.  I actually think that there is a segment of his base for which that kind of socialist crisis management will be a bridge too far.
