US Politics: coughing for peace is like dying for the economy

Because the current government would rather let people die than admit that there's a problem? They were willing to keep the ship in danger until the captain let word out.

Captain Crozier's chief sin seems to have been displaying more concern for the lives of the people under him than the reputations of the people above him.

So no idea how to resolve the situation then? How would you keep the crew safe, and keep the carrier operationally viable?

Do what they are doing now, when he first raised the alarm instead of letting things get worse. How long would they have been kept at sea unless he leaked his letter?

Christ this is like republicans talking about the economy. If there's a shipboard outbreak, you can't keep it operationally viable. You can speed up getting back to operationally viable by getting the crew safe ASAP. But if you want both you will fail. If you prioritize keeping the carrier operational, you will fail.

ETA: The US might have the capacity to totally swap out crews to get things back going faster, but I doubt it.

Today They used the c19 as an excuse to stop issuing new passports – indefinitely.  Gulag anyone?  Just like Dixie was one locked down prison camp to keep slaves from escaping. They say it is to discourage travel.  But one can still issue passports.  Passports and getting on a plane are not equivalents.

You don't. Again, there is no reasonable way to take a 20% drop in personnel and make it operationally viable, and there is no way to keep the ship actually clean. The ship requires drydock maintenance for a few weeks, just like another accident.

As it stands, they're going to have to do that anyway

Speaking of corrective labor, NY is now offering inmates $6 an hour to dig mass graves:

Also, last night the state budget passed including provisions that roll back the bail reform that went through in Jan.  During a pandemic already spreading through prisons:

Trump attacked 3M on Twitter, saying they would pay for not diverting 10 M N95 masks made for the Asian markets to the US.

We hit 3M hard today after seeing what they were doing with their Masks. “P Act” all the way. Big surprise to many in government as to what they were doing - will have a big price to pay!

Do we need to relitigate the myriad reasons for anti-Hillary sentiment? Misogyny. Decades of right-wing hatchet jobs. Lack of charisma. BUTTERMAILS.

There is also legitimate criticism for Clinton.

But, sure misogyny, slander, a lack of charisma, and the email controversy did play a significant part

There was a lack of campaigning in considered ”safe” places.

Such as Wisconsin where see didn't put much/if any effort trying to secure.

Again, comparing two different times with completely different context. In 2016, Trump, to many, was a relative unknown where people would project their views onto him. Despite his complete lack of morality, ethics, intelligence, et cetera.

The ”context” you supplied doesn't give credence to the idea of relying on dislike/hatred of Trump being an effective strategy.

The vast majority of Americans can hate him.

That doesn't matter if they also aren't enthused to vote for Biden.

He’s literally  doing worse than Clinton did at this juncture in 2016.

More people dislike/hated Trump then, but most of his supporters we're excited to vote for the guy.

No. It makes you think about what a terrible candidate Bernie is to lose to a weak candidate.

Not really. Trump was probably the worst candidate for the Gop to run back in 2016.

I imagine Jeb Bush if nominated would probably have done better.

Probably would've gotten a far more significant poll bump over the pandemic than Trump too.

At best it shows Democrats thinking Biden is more electable. And he may be.

But I don't think take him winning the nomination as proof of that.

Dude, how can you keep it operationally viable when the crew is dead? Or if they fucking mutiny because their CINC is a fucking stupid cunt?

Maintaining operational readiness doesn't mean stupidly following orders and FUBARing an already fucked up situation.

Republicans may have gotten what they've been slavering about for years: a government they finally drowned in a bathtub.

A  bunch of healthy men, predominantly in their 20's and 30's. Maybe worst case scenario 0.5% dies. I guess that's how the conversation went at a certain level.
