Is Bowen Marsh a Deep One?

The protagonists of the novel,  Fevre Dream is also named Marsh.  He is the protagonists of the NW. Do you think there is a deeper meaning to Bowen's name?  He is a crannogman and marsh is a fitting surname for his people.

Possibly, but I think the Crannog's would still use Snow.

Or Mudd.

Possibly the bastard name for the crannog people.  Better than Bowen Bog.

We're getting bogged down with names.

Abner Marsh and he is fondly remembered by York and the gang.  It is easy to understand if the black brothers build a monument to Bowen Marsh and remember his sacrifice to remove Jon from office.  Tormund and the wild wildlings will kill him.

So joke titles aside why on Earth is his name yet another Lovecraft reference, in this case from the Shadow over Innsmouth? Is there any reason or is it just because?

Just because.  It fits with the frogeaters.

Naaah.  He's just a swamp boy.  They're a loyal folk.  Howland was loyal to Ned.  Meera and Jojen were loyal to Bran.  Bowen was loyal to the Night's Watch.  Their culture value loyalty.  You want a loyal officer to manage the supplies.  He is someone who could not be corrupted.  Mormont had no worries because Bowen was not going to appropriate goods for his own gain.

While it seems logical that House Marsh are crannogmen because of their name and sigil, GRRM has not confirmed that for us. Bowen is described as round but not short, and ADWD suggests he follows the Seven instead of the old gods. GRRM does not include Marsh when he lists family names of the crannogmen.

Quote

Just as dangerous were its people, seldom seen but always lurking, the swamp-dwellers, the frog-eaters, the mud-men. Fenn and Reed, Peat and Boggs, Cray and Quagg, Greengood and Blackmyre, those were the sorts of names they gave themselves. The ironborn called them all bog devils. (ADWD Reek II)
