Gaston de Foix
Luke has to confront Vader to become a Jedi. That's not even remotely fair as a graduation test! Although Yoda says "confront" not "kill", which is significant, IMHO.
Gaston de Foix
Shit. Is Yoda dying?
Gaston de Foix
Yoda's dead. Luke is the last of the Jedi . Yeah okay the mystery of the other Skywalker is completely spoiled because of the prequels. I'm pretty sure I knew that Leia was Luke's sister tho (largely because of the kiss controversy). Gaston de Foix
Obi Wan now selling relativism as an explanation for why he said Vader murdered his father. Not buying it. But also not buying Luke's "there still good in him". Luke, remember your fIve fingers, your palm.
Gaston de Foix
Obi Wan says "You must face Darth Vader again". Luke objects to patricide, reasonably enough. I thought Yoda's words left some wiggle room about whether Luke had to kill his dad but Obi Wan dispels all doubt.

Gaston de Foix
Lando, your plot armor isn't thick enough to promise "not a scratch". What happened to your sense of self-preservation?
Gaston de Foix
The Emperor weirdly refers to Vader periodically as "my friend". This may be a remnant of the Palpatine-Anakin friendship. And yet Palpatine issues direct commands without much explanation.

Alright, Luke has a lightsaber now, green this time. Does the distinction between green and blue lightsabers have a significance for Jedi knights? They retconned that in a videogame and novels and such to mean something. Truth is Green shows up better contrasting against sand and blue sky so they changed it late in the game. There is at least one trailer with it being blue and the cover of the novelization is a blue lightsaber

Meanwhile, It seems Vader is disobeying the Emperor's commands to leave Luke to come to him. Hmmm.
Gaston de Foix
So I finally meet an Ewok. They are kinda cute.
Gaston de Foix
Also playing to lots of outdated stereotypes. Interestingly, compared to ESB, this movie is a good deal slower.
Gaston de Foix
Luke tells Leia she is his sister. And expresses his high-minded desire to turn his father back. The same desire the Emperor identified as Luke's greatest weakness. Interestingly that is not what Obi Wan Kenobi told him he would have to do when confronting his father (although it may be what Yoda meant). But it's pretty clear that this is the hinge on which the whole outcome will depend.
Gaston de Foix
Luke surrenders to Vader. And continues to call Vader his father. Which may not be so naive/readily trusting given his game plan, now that I think about it. Vader calls Luke son in return but hands him over to the Emperor anyway. Stannis Eats No Peaches
This is really charming to read, and makes it pretty clear that you should definitely watch in the order of release if watching for the first time. That way when you get to the prequels you’ve seen the good stuff, and now you can understand how much of a mess they made of it.
Gaston de Foix
Thanks, Stannis. Pancakes and Nandos are enough to win me the afternoon to finish up. Our heroes are assembled in Endor and planning on mounting a rescue. The friendly Ewok mounts a distraction. For a seemingly primitive civilization they sure seem to know how to ride a bike.
