Football: Glories of future past in the Age of Apocalypse.

Recommended Posts

Yes, somewhat convoluted thread title. Wanted to include the age of apocalypse thing, and somewhat ended up with that. Sorry.

Going back to the old thread.

@BigFatCoward the fee for Sane doesnt strike me as outrageously low. You have to factor in a few things. First, the obvious uncertain financial situation of all clubs. So no club in their right mind would pay 100m now. Sane was also entering the final year of his contract, and he made clear that he wanted to leave. So he was an item for a buyers market. Then City also has this pesky possible FFP ban pending over them. So they possibly were quite happy to dump some wages and take in a fee.

In other news, Thiago apparently wants to leave Bayern. Rumor has Liverpool as his destination. Fantastic player, but I don't see how a playmaker fits into their system.

Rummenigge did say that it seems Thiago is eager to try something new. James Pearce reported that Klopp is an admirer of Thiago so a move cannot be rule out but given that Thiago is 29, has had injury issues and would cost ~€35m, it would go against the way Liverpool have operated in recent years. Christian Falk says United are interested too. Rummenigge also said that Bayern cannot afford to sign Havertz this season.

Reports that Jude Bellingham has opted to join Dortmund. Fee reported to be around €25m but Birmingham journos say that the fee with add-ons will be around £30m.

Romano reporting that Inter are in talks with Chelsea to sign Emerson.

Thiago would really only make sense if Gini had no intention of signing an extension. Would be a class signing.

Even then, his age and injury profile don’t look right at that price.  Timo Werner for 54m seems much better value than Thiago for 30m based on what we need.  Especially with Keita and Ox both healthy and looking ready for MF roles, and Fabinho now the anchor of the MF.  Hendo is hard to dislodge from the MF.  Milner is still a back-up.  Gini is inconsistent and not yet committed to a contract, but we have other players and wouldn’t want to sign anyone over 26.

Some seriously poor defending. This is De Gea's level now which is to say he's turned into the Spanish David James and Maguire is always susceptible against fleet-footed and nimble players. Hopefully this doesn't cost us points. With Chelsea losing, it's usually a safe bet that we will drop points too since we seem to be allergic to the top 4.

On a different note (talents and whatnot), it's a bit strange to se Solanke struggling playing for a relegation fodder team (and not really making a mark at Chelsea or 'pool before that). He was the star of the WC-winning U21-squad, and was considered then a much better prospect than his strike partner - DCL.

At least we've managed to put some daylight between ourselves and Bournemouth. We've been the better side by a country mile. It's just incredibly irritating that the 2 league goals we've conceded since the restart have been the result of school boy errors.

There is always someone to pick up from a relegated team. Cantwell from Norwich (and Buendia for pg), for instance.

Who from Bournemouth will be raided? Fraser is a free agent, but the others .. Aké, perhaps?

King will go. He's not a consistent enough scorer to be a main man for anyone but he works hard and offers versatility in attack, some mid-table team will find a use for him. He'd be a perfect Burnley player but they probably can't afford him for what he is so someone like Sheff Utd, Southampton or Arsenal might be interested.

Billing's alright too and Harry Wilson will prolly get picked up.

Anyway yeah apart from that one mistake in the first and the meltdown for five minutes at the start of the second that was class. We've turned around unbelievably in this kind of game.

Callum Wilson has potential as well, at least for a mid-table side. But overall, it feels like there really isn't enough quality in the team to elevate it, and Howe hasn't managed to make the sum better than the sum of its parts this year.

Too bad for Bournemouth, but I do suspect they go down this year.

hmm, I would have preferred some alternate thread titles:

Scruffy games with scruffy heads

This is football? I call FAKE NOISE!

And we if have to make references to movie franchises - OK Zoomers, are you not entertained?

Milan comfortably beating Lazio. That will be two defeats in four games for Lazio since the restart which is a shame really. It looked like it was going to be a close title race especially since Lazio were flying before the lockdowns - 22 game unbeaten run with 18 wins.
