Not really the "German nuclear program"; just the potential of one was enough to convince the Roosevelt. The US army knew long before May 1945 that the Germans weren't going to do it.

Germany never had the industrial base to make a program like this happen. Arguably, they never had the intellectual base either. Heisenberg was a brilliant man but he was just one man. Most of the elite European physics community was living in England or America by the time the war started. Ultimately, they never found out how far they could get because Hitler chose to divert resources into the V2 rocket program

I missed this quote, and I would dispute it. I'm drawing from Rhode's book, but there was absolutely grave concerns that Germany had a robust nuclear program going. The fear was heightened when Germany invaded Norway and obtained access to their heavy water.

The British went out of their way to sabotage Germany's heavy water supply because of these fears.

Heisenberg was certainly intellectually capable of leading a nuclear program. The problem that Germany faced is that due to miscalculations, they discounted graphite as a moderator, and so relied on the scarce and expensive heavy water for neutron moderation. Also, as you say, Hitler did not understand the program itself and so didn't give it complete support.

But the Allies were quite concerned about the state of Germany's program. And these fears were grounded in some reality. The German program was indeed highly underdeveloped at the end of the war. But if the war had continued to drag on and America hadn't had such an accelerated program, it is very probable that Heisenberg would have overcome the difficulties of a moderator eventually. From there, he would have been able to obtain appropriate cross-section data, and then the acquisition of a uranium bomb would have certainly been feasible.

The Manhattan Project was lavishly expensive expressly because it was so accelerated. There were several enrichment techniques developed that ultimately weren't useful in the time frame of the war. Additionally, America spent quite a bit going down the path of both uranium enrichment and plutonium production. Germany could have afforded a gaseous diffusion plant, and had enough uranium for a gun assembly weapon within 12-18 months of running the first feedstock.

No one could say if Heisenberg would have succeeded in developing an implosion device, but a gun assembly would have been certain.

Edit: Instead of carrying on with any potential back and forth, I will conclude with this: Why Hitler Did Not Have Atomic Bombs

While it cannot compare with your superb Feynman link, I think it really is a fascinating article.

Disney are making a Willow sequel TV series. If they fuck it up I'll be heartbroken. It was such a mainstay of my youth. Warwick Davis appears only character returning so far.

I wore out the VHS from when I taped it off tv. But even back then I knew it wasn’t a great movie however. It has a lot of charm but it’s also quite bad.

There is room to make it actually good. I kind of liked how they updated Dark Crystal, which is also not a great movie.

The show returns to Givens’ story eight years after he’s left Kentucky and now is based in Miami, balancing life as a marshal and part-time father of a 14-year-old girl. A chance encounter on a Florida highway sends him to Detroit and he crosses paths with Clement Mansell, aka The Oklahoma Wildman, a violent sociopath who’s already slipped through the fingers of Detroit’s finest once and wants to do so again.

Wow, I thought it was just going to be a straight up cameo role for a spinoff, not a full continuation. Won't be the same without Boyd but I'm wondering if they can create an equally compelling villain out of this Oklahoma Wildman.

Compelling villain is one thing, but charismatic frienemy Boyd always was is an entirely different level. I don't think they can even get close to that, but nevertheless I am waiting eagerly for the show, Olyphant alone is enough for me.

This looks very visually impressive, if nothing else.

It does look like they are redoing the story a bit to avoid having to depict the Fall of Reach as the key event to launch them to finding the original Halo, which is understandable. I'm not sure even with the giga-budget they have, they can effectively depict the Fall.

Something odd about the sound.  Visually looks great.  But the sound of the voices seems like straight-to-video B-movie quality, where it's a bit muted or too smoothed out to a narrow amplitude.

The above video is not available for me, so here it is again.

Visually impressive, filled with B-list actors. My immersion got lost right at the beginning when they showed the rebel/insurgent guy with an AK-47, so there are still budget limitations. I plan on signing up for Paramount+ when Picard starts, so I'll likely watch this, too.
