The court is located opposite where we park in the CBD. At 0715 hrs today, there were already hundreds of people lined up for the public gallery. I haven’t followed the case closely, but it seemed to turn on forensics, which was always going to be a tricky area given the timing of the murders. I agree. I think Andrews was decisive and what he did in Victoria was defensible. It took a long time but the state was one of the few that successfully stopped COVID in the world. The way the defence ran the case was the main reason for that I think. They didn't run a positive case and led no evidence at all. Hard to say if he will appeal the sentence. And they're still planning on going ahead with the cricket, with a 50% capacity crowd, which is insanity. Really really bad time of the year for this to happen. Jeor Posted December 30, 2020 Share Posted December 30, 2020 18 cases today is a bad number, and they're starting to seep out of the Northern Beaches area. I think it's only a matter of time now before this blows wide open. We're going to get the post-Christmas surge, it's just a matter of how badly it is. NSW has proven that they can keep a lid on things with the contact tracing as long as the numbers stay below 25 cases per day. But once it starts to get above that, another outbreak will have begun in earnest. I hope people are sensible over the New Year, but there will be enough idiots that it's unlikely to be contained. Any delayed lockdown will come at a bad time, too - four more weeks until schools go back. brook Posted December 30, 2020 Share Posted December 30, 2020 Yesterday’s figures weren’t as bad as they look. 9 of the 18 were already in isolation before they were infectious and the venue alerts released yesterday were mostly very recent and in lower risk categories. The unlinked cases are still concerning but it did sound like they have probable links for a few of them that they were trying to confirm so I’m really hoping we get good news today. They didn't pick up on it until the cluster was quite large and they never found the source, then had potential spread Christmas a week later, and NYE tonight, it looks like it could really blow up. Was listening to Norman Swan on the ABC saying that there's modelling showing there could be 3x as many cases out there, I'd assume with most being minimally / pre / asymptomatic. Not that I particularly trust COVID modelling, it's been pretty shit mostly, but I tend towards assuming the worst especially after Melbourne. Fingers crossed putting out spot fires works. Not sure if the data backs it up, but it looks worse than the earlier Crossroads cluster. On the overreaction side of things Vic have 6 linked cases that they can trace the source of back to NSW, have mandated mask use, and WA immediately shuts its border, Because that's WA. karaddin Posted December 31, 2020 Share Posted December 31, 2020 Norman Swan's comments on the 3x as many cases was stated like a fact when the modeling is, as I understood it, from early in the pandemic before we had greatly increased testing capacity and in particular just had a large surge of tests the week before. I'm concerned as well but I still think asking people to work with them is the right approach, we don't want to turn it into a policing issue. Jeor Posted December 31, 2020 Share Posted December 31, 2020 Happy New Year everyone! NYE celebrations in Sydney were very muted. I think everyone is still holding their breath on COVID. The potential for two superspreading events close together (Christmas and NYE) means that the next week will be critical as those infections start to crop up. IMO, it’s not OK to make it difficult for Australian citizens to return to the country, while bending over backwards to allow a thousand plus tennis players and entourage enter with quarantine exceptions to facilitate training. Fingers very much crossed they remain this way. I was enjoying the few short days it seemed we'd eliminated the virus. @Paxter , yes it sucks. I've had quite a few friends & colleagues who were overseas and had to pack up their lives to get home in the past year. Most have then had to spend a month in quarantine & isolation. They don't even think locking people out of their own state and preventing them from getting home is a problem, so I can't imagine their sentiments for Aussies trying to get home from overseas is going to improve So many people don't seem to connect that people getting back here is limited by the states accepting arrivals into quarantine, and that doing this is an important duty we have not some unacceptable risk to stop. Because the federal government is trying to do absolutely nothing with respect to the pandemic so it can't be blamed, and then by virtue of being uninvolved somehow be able to claim all credit for success.
